The Band Review The search to find Melbourne's best live, unsigned acts... So I’m guessing you already know that Melbourne is the best city in Australia for live music.

We’re not talking about some big name band with more money than god playing a gig at Rod Laver Arena, we’re talking about the unsigned bands out there doing the hard yards, perfecting their craft in their parents garage to bring you a mind-blowing show at some of the coolest (and s**ttiest) venues around this awesome city. So if you’re like us, you’ll be keen to check out the best of these bands t

hat Melbourne has to offer; to filter through the jokers playing covers of “Jessie’s Girl” and to bring you a bunch of rad kids rocking out some killer original tunes, or some serious musician’s who know how to write great music but haven’t received their due recognition yet. Our job is therefore to give you the skinny on what’s out there so you can allocate your precious time to seeing the sickest unsigned acts around Melbourne, and discover music that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about. We review these acts honestly and independently (free s**t we hopefully receive from doing this will in no way influence our judgement) and we’ll let you know about upcoming shows to give you the chance to see the next big thing whilst the tix are cheap and the beers won’t send you broke…

Here is how we rate the gigs we see:

The Scale of Awesomeness

You gotta go see these cats right now! Damn these guys are tight! Got potential to be sick. Live performance needs work. Hmm not for us…

Aww yeah. Mark and Tommy

Our first band to ever receive the highest rating "You Gotta Go See These Cats RIght Now!", The Murlocs, are playing both Meredith and Harvest!! Probably the two best Victorian festivals. We told you to go see em, so did ya? Well did ya? Cos now they're bloody famous.

» ScotDrakula TheBandReview

We've been keeping a low profile lately but we're back with a review of an awesome band that played at an incredible gig at The Grace Darling Hotel. They are ScotDrakula - and they are such good sports they will let you download their entire album for free! God bless 'em...

To begin with, a special thanks goes to Drunk Mums for organising this gig with ScotDrakula and Mesa Cosa, as this amazing line-up made it one of the best gigs I have seen in a long time. There was a bit of dancing, a wild mosh pit, a bunch of great songs and a little bit of blood… but for now we’re...

SLAM | S.L.A.M (Save Live Australian Music) – Don't Kill Live Music

On 23rd February 2010, the SLAM rally saw 20,000 people march through Melbourne to the tune of AC/DC’s definitive ‘Long Way to the Top’, in protest against the Victorian Government’s misguided policy link between live music and violence. Out on the streets of our city, we showed our support and love for a truly great live music community. The SLAM rally was the largest cultural protest in Australia’s history. Now all of Australia has the opportunity to participate in a national event that celebrates our local musicians in our small venues.

Music communities around Australia are invited to unite in support of our thriving live culture by hosting their own National SLAM Day gigs.

On Thursday 23rd February 2012, support your local artists and venues by getting out and experiencing the spontaneous excitement and intimacy you only get at a small venue.

âYou donât learn how to write a song at school, you donât do a Tafe course on how to play in front of an audience, small venues were my university. I still go to music pubs and cafes all the time to do some studyâ¦a refresher courseâ Paul Kelly, SLAM Rally speech 2010

» Playwrite TheBandReview

We were lucky enough to get an ACTUAL band reviewer to review a gig for us! Makes us look like chumps... Anyway the band is 'Playwrite' and they warmed James' heart on Valentine's day. Have a read.

If you walk down an urban street in Melbourne, you will often hear a ‘muso’ complaining about some gig or some band; it is the prerogative of those who are fortunate enough to live in a city adorned with beautiful venues, which offer talented artists almost every night of the week. Next time you hea...

» The Murlocs TheBandReview

Ohhh baby... we're back. With a review of a band called The Murlocs. I don't want to give too much away without you reading the review, but let's just say one of the band members has a moustache. And it is awesome. So is the band.

Love,
The Band Review.

We have written so many positive gig reviews for The Band Review so far that people may be wondering if we are just super happy, positive dudes who don’t want to say anything bad about a band even if they are rubbish, so that we can all get along and make daisy chains and braid each others hair and ...

» A Dead Forest Index TheBandReview

The hauntingly beautiful A DEAD FOREST INDEX played at The Old Bar last week and we were there to review the set... Have a look and catch them at The Old Bar again tonight! Better be quick about it...

A Dead Forest Index consists of brothers Sam and Adam Sherry, who produce a dark/melodic/moody brand of indie rock, which could affect even the most cheery persons persona in a matter of just a few bars. Listening to tracks online before we went down had me expecting more than a duo but thanks to so...

» Ross de Chene Hurricanes TheBandReview

GOD DAMN we love watching the Ross de Chene Hurricanes play live!! Check out our take on this awesome two-piece as they rocked out The Gasometer Hotel on Saturday night!

I should start this review by stating that I have seen this dirty duo a number of times before, and since the very first time I saw them live, have thought that they fu***ng rock. But this is a review of their performance at The Gasometer Hotel, because that’s how we do it at The Band Review – it’s ...
