OUP Canada was founded in 1904 as the second office (after New York) to be established outside the United Kingdom.
Oxford University Press is the largest and second oldest university press in the world. Its imprint carries authority, its standards of book production are high, and its range of interests is wide. A department of the University of Oxford, the Press is not a company and it pays no dividend. It is devoted to the spread of knowledge, and all its surplus is devoted to the furtherance of scholarship, education, and research through transfers to the wider University. With Oxford’s book printing history stretching as far back as 1478, OUP has a long and proud tradition. Since the 17th century the Press’s publishing has been produced under the direct authority of the Delegates, a committee of senior academics at the University who direct its affairs. Today, the Global Academic Division is responsible for the great reference works for which OUP is famous: The Oxford English Dictionary, The Dictionary of National Biography, and many others. It publishes several series of scholarly texts, a great many monographs in the arts, sciences, and medicine, and a growing list of college textbooks and academic paperbacks, as well as books aimed primarily at the general reader. Oxford also publishes a wide range of educational resources from early childhood to higher education level in a wide range of subjects. Beyond the UK OUP is represented by a network of offices, branches, and associated companies in Canada, the United States, Australia, India, Pakistan, East Africa, Southern Africa, Malaysia, China, Spain, and many other countries – roughly four dozen in all.
