Another tragic loss for movie lovers this year with the passing of Alain Delon, one of French cinema's most unforgettable faces. With 5 films under his belt since 1957 it would only be a few years later that the handsome actor would become a worldwide star with his sensual portrayal of sly swindler Tom Ripley in PURPLE NOON, for our money still the best adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's classic novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Further notable collaborations with director René Clément include THE JOY OF LIVING, JOY HOUSE and IS PARIS BURNING? The same year as PURPLE NOON's release he appeared in Luchino Visconti's epic and operatic final stab at neorealism ROCCO AND HIS BROTHERS, working with the famed Italian filmmaker once more on THE LEOPARD. Also on his impressive résumé are two of Henri Verneuil's best crime flicks (ANY NUMBER CAN WIN and THE SICILIAN CLAN), Julien Duvivier's THE DEVIL AND THE TEN COMMANDMENTS and DIABOLICALLY YOURS, Joseph Losey's THE ASSASSINATION OF TROTSKY and the astounding MR. KLEIN, Alain Jessua's SHOCK TREATMENT and ARMAGEDDON, Bertrand Blier's NOTRE HISTOIRE and LES ACTEURS, at least 8 films with Jacques Deray (our favorite being FLIC STORY from 1975), and of course most famously the three films he made with Jean-Pierre Melville (LE SAMOURAI, LE CERCLE ROUGE and UN FLIC). Those credits alone would be enough to cement a legendary career but here are some other noteworthy films from his immense catalogue we recommend:

One of the greatest actors to ever live. RIP to the luminous and legendary Gena Rowlands, known to most through the 9 films she made with her husband John Cassavetes from 1958 to 1984. While she had an uncredited bit part in the first film SHADOWS, by 1974 she would become known the world round for her unforgettable performance in A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE. I had the pleasure of seeing that film on 35mm many years ago at Atlanta's Midtown Art and there was a moment where it looked like the print was about to tear itself apart as it sputtered wildly, a coincidental but appropriate symbol of Rowlands' performance and the movie itself.

One of the most unsettling and downbeat movies of the 1970s finally sees the light of day with a Blu-Ray release after toiling in obscurity for years! We talked about it on our podcast a couple Halloweens ago and it comes highly recommended to those looking for something on the more somber and serious side of exploitation cinema.
