Medical Center of McKinney offers free hernia seminar.
Free Hernia Seminar

Hernias can be slow to show themselves – a little discomfort and pain – before obvious symptoms like an abnormal protrusion, or bulging out, reveal itself. Many patients may try to live with a hernia, but surgery will become necessary as hernias do not heal themselves and continue to grow.

If you think you may have a hernia and would like to learn more about treatment options join Medical City McKinney, 4500 Medical Center Drive, McKinney, for a FREE Hernia Seminar on Saturday, December 9th from 10 a.m. – noon in the hospital main lobby.

Please register by going to www.medicalcitymckinney.com and select “Classes and Events,” or call 1-855-296-6265.

David Lambert, MD, a general surgeon on staff at Medical City McKinney, will present information on the different types of hernias, treatment options, including minimally invasive robotic surgery, and recovery expectations. Seminar will address questions for men and women. Attendees will also be able to test-drive Medical City McKinney’s newest surgical robot.

“Hernias aren’t necessarily dangerous in and of themselves,” said Dr. Lambert. “However, they don’t get better or go away on their own, and it’s possible for a hernia to lead to other health problems. For this reason, surgery to repair the opening in the muscle wall that is painful or becoming larger is the only solution.”

Medical City McKinney is a member of the Texas Institute for Robotic Surgery, which means surgeons are skilled in using leading edge surgical robots and have access to the world’s leading robotic surgery database.

Collin County Courthouse to be renamed renamed the Russell A. Steindam Courts Building

By a unanimous 5-0 vote, the Collin County Commissioners Court voted yesterday to name the county courthouse after Russell A. Steindam, a Congressional Medal of Honor winner who gave his life for his fellow soldiers during the Vietnam War. The County Courthouse building will be renamed the Russell A. Steindam Courts Building after this local hero.

Russell grew up in Plano, where his family moved when he was five years old. He graduated at the top of his class from Plano High School before entering the University of Texas. He chose to join the campus ROTC, following in the footsteps of his father, Albert Steindam, who was an Army Air Corp pilot in World War II and a prisoner of war in Germany after being shot down.

A born leader and excellent academic, Russell graduated with honors in 1968 and received his Army commission. Newly married to Mary Anne Erwin, he graduated from Officer Training School that December. The following year, Russell volunteered for duty in Vietnam.

As an Army Ranger and one of the famed MacKenzie’s Raiders of the 4th Calvary, First Lieutenant Steindam volunteered to lead a dangerous night ambush patrol on February 1, 1970, four months after arriving in Vietnam.

According to the Congressional Medal of Honor citation,
“On the way to the ambush site, suspected enemy movement was detected on one flank and the platoon’s temporary position was subjected to intense small arms and automatic weapons fire as well as a fusillade of hand and rocket-propelled gr***des. After the initial barrage, 1st Lt. Steindam ordered fire placed on the enemy position and the wounded men to be moved to a shallow bomb crater. As he directed the return fire against the enemy from exposed position, a fragmentation gr***de was thrown into the site occupied by his command group. Instantly realizing the extreme gravity of the situation, 1st Lt. Steindam shouted a warning to alert his fellow soldiers in the immediate vicinity. Then, unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his safety, 1st Lt. Steindam deliberately threw himself on the gr***de, absorbing the full and fatal force of the explosion as it detonated. By his gallant action and self-sacrifice, he was able to save the lives of the nearby members of his command group. The extraordinary courage and selflessness displayed by 1st Lt. Steindam was an inspiration to his comrades and are in the highest traditions of the U. S. Army.”

Russell A. Steindam, alongside Audie Murphy, is the only other soldier from Collin County to receive the Medal of Honor. The Commissioners Court, on behalf of all citizens of Collin County, is proud to name the County’s most prominent building after him.

24/10/2017

On October 22nd 2017, Janet Durborow ran her 4th Marine Corps Marathon. She was given a choice to wear a bib that carries the name of a fallen soldier on it. At random, she chose 2nd Lt. Johnny K. Craver, who is a fallen warrior from Collin County. His name is listed on the Wall of Honor at the Veterans Memorial Park in McKinney.

2nd Lt Johnny K. Craver, 37, from McKinney, was killed in action in Iraq on Friday, October 13, 2006. Craver was serving with the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division out of at Fort Hood, Texas, when an improvised explosive device exploded near his vehicle. His unit was involved in combat operations in the area south of Bagdad when he was killed. Before being deployed to the war zone, Craver, pictured below, was a Ranger and a Ranger instructor.

Mr. Craver is still being honored and remembered to this day and that we thank him for his service and sacrifice.
