I just have to sit down for a moment. Within a few minutes I have a draft with more than ten incidents in which aid workers or missionaries died or lost a family member during their deployment to Africa. They were killed by highwaymen at a well-known viewpoint overlooking the Ngorongoro Crater, run over by a truck on their motorcycles, drowned in a flash flood while crossing a river in their car, were possibly poisoned by a malicious medicine man, lost a child from cerebral malaria and crashed in a small plane near Lake Victoria. At least two doctors died of AIDS. In Sierra Leone, a family was shot in cold blood by rebels, a 21-year-old female medical student went missing in Uganda near a river where crocodiles live, a young doctor died of Lassa fever, infected while performing a caesarean section. And then I don't even count the Dutch tourists who died that remain in my memory because they made the news: a 41-year-old woman died from the Marburg virus after a visit to a cave in Uganda, an attack by a swarm of African killers. bee in Tanzania killed a 69-year-old man, a 57-year-old safari goer was brutally murdered in front of his wife by a gang of robbers in the Serengeti, a 34-year-old female doctor died of rabies after a bat flew into her face .
In terms of risks, infectious diseases are at the bottom, but infectious diseases are also increasing worldwide. New variants are emerging: Zika, Ebola, Marburg, Ebola, Sars, Mers, Covid, monkeypox... and we are far from the end of that.
Of the two tropical doctors known to me who died of AIDS, one had become infected because he had removed a placenta without protection from a woman who had just given birth, who would otherwise have bled to death in her cabin. The other had had s*x with an African.

The upcoming story also takes place in the early days of HIV.
It just turned out differently.

Dit is een leerboek met een knipoog met als kern de eigen lastige maar ook interessante kwalen van een huisarts. Die kwamen op een moment dat de medische wetenschap daar net een prima oplossing voor had. De verwondering hierover leidde tot dit boek.

April-Mei 2020 overhandigde ik het eerste boek ‘in vrijheid achter glas’ nav de corona pandemie aan het CWZ in Nijmegen. Voor mij nog steeds onbegrijpelijk dat geen enkel Nederlands ziekenhuis dit boek cadeau gedaan heeft aan hun eigen zorgmedewerkers. Er ging nota bene ook nog eens 5 euro van elk verkocht boek naar hun eigen instelling juist ten behoeve van hen die zo zwaar geleden hadden onder corona en iedere dag met de onzekerheid van besmetting moesten werken. Zelfs dhr Kuipers vond het te onbelangrijk om op een brief en boek te reageren.

Blue Monday

Mogen meewerken aan een heel mooi project, verbinding zoeken met elkaar.

Mentale gezondheid is een groot goed. In het ambulance vak zijn wij aan mentale slijtage onderhevig. “Dit werk verandert je als persoon”. Wij worden veelvuldig blootgesteld aan ingrijpende of schokkende ervaringen en dat doet iets met je als mens.

Zelf heb ik dat in november 2015 ervaren door het verlies van mijn zoon van 19 jaar tijdens mijn nachtdienst. Werk en privé kwamen samen. Ik heb mij heel lang “alleen” gevoeld met heel veel lieve mensen om mij heen. De steun die ik wel altijd gevoeld heb en EMDR therapie heeft mij gebracht waar ik nu sta, ik doe mijn werk weer. Ook in uniform ben ik kwetsbaar en zo nu en dan uit evenwicht. Veel collega’s lopen met mentale problematiek rond of zitten thuis. “Praat erover, je bent niet alleen”.

If you don’t like water from the air go to the South of England. In my new roadbook on the Jurassic Coast, Devon, Dorset, Cornwall & the Costwolds I will navigate you to the best spots, over quiet roads, awesome hotels, lovely detours, a bit history as well and to great lunchspots. Reading Dutch is no must due to the charts, villages abd roadnumbers mentioned. You can’t drive wrong no matter what your Nationality is.
