Our Lust for Leather Comes at a High Price in the Developing World

Do you know what it takes to produce the leather in your shoes, boots, coats and purses? The byproducts involved are highly toxic and affect the health of millions in India and Bangladesh. Undark Magazine, published by the Knight Science Journalism Fellowship Program at MIT, just published part one of a four-part project on the toxic costs of leather and textile production. We started working on the project last year in India, Asia, New York and North Carolina. Stories by Debbie M. Price. Photography by Larry C. Price.

Leather processing is big business in Bangladesh, India, and other parts of the developing world, where regulations are lax and poisons run freely.

A few months back, Larry posted a few images from Indonesia while working on a story about the devastating effects of mercury poisoning among residents of remote island villages. Mercury pollution is spreading at an alarming rate in Indonesia and other parts of Oceania. Due e to lax enforcement of mining policies, rice, poultry, and marine life--staples of the Indonesian diet--are being contaminated and higher levels of heavy metals are finding their way into larger population centers. Here is the account of one tragic victim, posted yesterday on the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting's site. More accounts coming soon:

Exciting news! We jjust learned the story Larry filmed last year for PBS NewsHour on underwater mining in the Philippines was nominated for an Emmy Award today! It's one of five finalists in the investigative reporting category for a regularly scheduled broadcast. Winners will be announced in New York in September, but just being nominated has me stoked. This was a very satisfying story to do since it resulted in legislation in the Philippines Parliament that now outlaws this type of mining activity. No doubt lives will be saved.

The Prices are kicking back in Oslo after a fantastic couple of days in Kongsberg where the Norsk Bergverskmuseum is hosting "The Dark Side of Gold," 80 images and multimedia pieces from Larry's work on child labor. The opening and presentations last night were great fun. After introductions Larry spoke about the images and discussed the issues of child labor and mining with Norwegian author Anne Keilland. Many thanks to the museum staff for their over-the-top attention to detail--the shown is stunning! They were even able to frame and hang two images Larry made just three weeks ago and hand-carried on the flight over. So much hard work went into this project on both sides of the pond. we're so grateful to all out new Norwegian friends for their support.

Newspapers: Stabilizing, but Still Threatened | State of the Media

The Pew Research Center follows up on its 2013 State of the News Media report with slightly more optimistic news that smaller and mid-sized newspapers are beginning to develop revenue from their online products. http://stateofthemedia.org/2013/newspapers-stabilizing-but-still-threatened/

If the newspaper industry had theme music in 2013, it might use “Been down so long it looks like up to me,” the much-recycled line from a 1920s blues song.
