In a couple of weeks, we will continue the spy theme we've had this year and present Harry Whittington's Man from UNCLE novel "The Doomsday Affair". If you don't know about the Man from UNCLE, it was a popular TV series (made to take advantage of the James Bond craze) of the the early 1960's. American agent Napoleon Solo and Russian agent Illya Kuryakin battle the evil spy organization THRUSH. This is the second in the series of published books which are long out of print.

The THRUSH bad guy's code name in "Doomsday Affair" is Tixe Ylno. The U.N.C.L.E files have no details about him except for that code name. He could be anyone--a cab driver, a corporation executive, a scientist, a storekeeper...ANYONE! He might be anywhere in the United States. But whoever or whatever he was, U.N.C.L.E. has to find him because he controls a secret that has the world at his mercy!

Uvula will soon be bookcasting "Department of Danger" by Jack Lancer. This is the third book in the Christopher Cool TEEN agent series.

In this novel, an assignment from TEEN takes Chris to London on a dual mission: to search for information about his father who is being held prisoner behind the Iron Curtain, and to intercept a formula devised by an Asian scientist which threatens the world with a monstrous plague.

We should be premiering the story in the next couple of weeks when the primary audio recording has been completed and we have a good portion of the basic clean up and editing out of the way.

Next Friday, after Easter, Uvula Audio will premiere our bookcast of the next book in the Rick Brant Science-Adventure series. "The Golden Skull" is the tenth Rick Brant story, and is one of the slightly more adventure-oriented rather than scientifically-based volumes in the series. Although there is certainly science—though that science is archaeology much like the Indiana Jones movies. Rick and Scotty fly off to the Philippines, along with Dr. Tony Briotti, to search for the titular golden skull. Of course, things do not go smoothly or quite predictably.

So…. Many of you longtime listeners may remember from years back that Uvula Audio used to have several audio books of Doc Savage novels posted for your listening pleasure—including the Man of Bronze. We were asked perhaps 9-10 years ago to cease and desist by Conde-Nast who holds the copyright for the books. We did so without argument.

Now 10 years later, we think that the copyright has run out for the Man of Bronze. The Man of Bronze (Doc Savage #1) was published back in 1933 and written by Lester Dent under the company pseudonym “Kenneth Robeson”. Now my simplistic understanding of the copyright law is that The Doc Savage novels were written as "work for hire". Lots of series fiction were written and illustrated that way back in the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s—think of the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. Note that the copyright says "Conde Nast" not "Lester Dent". Given that that is situation, work written for hire has only a 75 year protection under pre-1978 copyright law—without the extra 50 years of after-death author protection. That means that when Conde-Nast asked us to cease and desist playing Doc Savage audio books, the first novel at least was already out of copyright… My understanding is that the Man of Bronze is already public domain in Canada.

If any lawyer out there can confirm this, we will happily re-post The Man of Bronze after many years and tell Conde Nast to, um . . . go do something unpleasant. If you are motivated as a Doc savage fan to go check this out, then your payoff will be the return of Doc to our lineup!

Thanks for any help you give,

We just wanted to remind everyone that we are in the fourth week of Mark Twain's "A Tramp Abroad" bookcast and five volumes of the story have already been posted! We hope you are enjoying the story. Our narrator tried to make the reading as entertaining as possible. Twain is often forgotten as being one of the funniest men to have ever lived.

The last volume ( #9) of "The Boy Fortune Hunters in Panama" by L. Frank Baum was posted today! Yeah!! That was a long, hard road to finish it up! It took quite a while to get the bugs worked out of our new recording studio. https://www.uvulaaudio.com/kids.html

We have now returned to recording "A Tramp Abroad" by Mark Twain which we only partially finished back in 2020. We hope to have the first episode up by Thanksgiving. https://www.uvulaaudio.com/books.html

28/08/2021

Uvula Audio’s new presentation of the Boy Fortune Hunters in Panama is now active and the first volume can be downloaded. This is the sequel to the boy fortune hunters in Alaska.

As you may remember from previous the fortune hunters in Alaska—Floyd Akers is the Pseudonym for Frank Baum, who thought a boys adventure series would not sell as well with his own name attached. In fact, it is even more complicated. This book was originally published in 1907 under an entirely different Baum pseudonym, Captain Hugh Fitzgerald with a different title as Sam Steele's Adventures in Panama. It was reprinted and re-titled the following year as "The Boy Fortune Hunters in Panama" under the pen name Floyd Akers.

In this volume, Sam Steele discovers the location of a lost tribe deep in the heart of Panama where diamonds litter the earth! A secret map found among a dead man’s belongings points the way. But to get there Sam will need to maneuver through mountains, marshes, and mayhem. Come join Sam and his friends on a dangerous journey to riches and adventure in the Moit Convertible Automobile!

We are trying to get the next Rick Brant bookcast started in the next couple of weeks with "Stairway to Danger". We have been backlogged by several months because we have been in the process of setting up a new studio so we can more efficiently produce episodes for bookcasts. We are finally finished after numerous technological glitches trying to get pre-amps and new mics to talk to each other. Volumes 1-4 are completed and uploaded to the cloud. Volume 5 is in post-production editing and clean-up. The raw recording on Volume 6 is half-way done. Our general policy is to have at least half the series in the can before we start posting, so we are about a week away from having Volume 5 done and posting Volume 1.

P.S. The newest book jacket for "Stairway to Danger" may be the most abhorrent yet in the series-- more on this in the audio introduction to volume 1 of S.t.D..

Just a quick update: one of our thoughtful listeners, Andrew Geiszler, has noted a whole series of dead links on the Uvula Website. After he sent us a dead-link analysis, we went back in and fixed a whole series of book-casts that have probably been dead for at least a year-- very sorry about that. Among these book-casts that are repaired are: The Lone Ranger, Policeman Bluejay, I, Libertine, and Hamlet and Eggs. Please enjoy their return and our thanks to Andrew.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Police psychologist Edwardo Bratenahl is a young widower, still mourning the tragic loss of his wife. Bratenahl, an academic and native of the insular Cleveland neighborhood of Little Italy, is asked to assist with the homicide investigation of world-class geneticist Dr. Simon Pederson, who was viciously slain during Sunday mass. Bratenahl is partnered with Mary Kate Calderon, veteran homicide detective. The two soon discover a related murder, which Calderon confesses looks eerily like a scenario she witnessed as a child in Nicaragua, with all the hallmarks of a Sandinista interrogator dubbed Diablo Rojo. Bratenahl brushes this off as coincidence, but the psychologist soon discovers just how perilous the world around him is, as he collides with the Red Devil, Simon Pederson’s legacy of destruction, and the weight of family history in this twisty, dark police procedural.

Today Uvula Audio premieres a "new" two-part novella bookcast. This new horror/SF story was written by Edmond Hamilton in 1949 and first published in the magazine "Thrilling Wonder Stories". It has seldom been reprinted. I remember reading this awesome story in "The Great SF Stories 11" (year:1949) which came out in 1984, and I have not seen it anywhere since. It is partly a brilliant adventure story, party a bit of early psychedelia, partly a thought experiment, partly a Lovecraftian horror story, and partly a plunge into the "Heart of Darkness" in a way that Joseph Conrad would have really appreciated. Any more details would create spoilers aplenty. Enjoy

This week Uvula Audio has premiered a new juvenile bookcast. Volume One of Phyllis Whitney's wonderful, atmospheric book, The Secret of the Samurai Sword, is now available for download and streaming.

SSS was published originally in 1958 and reprinted a couple of times since, but it has been out of print since the mid-eighties and you will be hard pressed to find a copy. The story itself is a bit more modern than the Rick Brant books in terms of setting by almost a decade. The story itself concerns Celia and Stephen Bronson visit to Kyoto, Japan, to spend the summer vacation with their vivacious book-writing grandmother. There, they find a strange mystery awaiting them. Whitney grew up in Japan so she knows her setting in detail and evokes post-WW II Japan beautifully.

UPDATE 2.0 of Caves of Fear, Volume 5.

The new, cleaned up version of Volume 5 of "Caves of Fear" is now active. We checked it multiple times and its sounds excellent! ENJOY!

23/01/2020

CAVES OF FEAR UPDATE:

Very sorry. Many listeners have commented on the low sound quality of Volume 5 of the Caves of Fear. After several weeks, we have been unable to resolve the problem by going back to our original recording. It is still a mystery how a) the recording got past our quality control and b) why exactly it is so degraded.

Sigh.

That means that we will have to re-record it. That is not a thrilling prospect given that we've already moved onto the next audio project. It takes time to record, edit/post-process, and then check all recordings for quality (usually not a problem), so we will have to *make* the extra time
to fix that volume because none of us is happy with its lousy sound quality either-- so there we are.

Expect the new recording of Volume 5 in the next couple of weeks.

Premiering on Uvula Audio this Thanksgiving week: Rick Brant #8, The Caves of Fear! We will be bookcasting the next Rick Brant book starting on Thanksgiving. This is one of my favorite Rick Brant stories because it involves all the guys—Rick, Scotty, Zircon, and Chada. And it finds Rick and Scotty traveling out of NJ and back to Asia. Rick and Scotty get a telegram. It’s a coded message from Chahda, their friend from Bombay. It's a bunch of numbers that look like nonsense until Spindrift’s brain trust decodes it. Once decoded, the message leads the young men to Hong Kong and then deeper into China where they aid Chada and get involved in a hair-raising adventure of puzzles and intrigue! Enjoy!!

We will soon be offering the classic of Christian literature-- The Imitation Of Christ-- for your listening pleasure. This particular tome seems to be a little slower than usual in terms of recording and editing, but we hope to be done with the text by August. For those of you unfamiliar with the 15th Century book by Thomas A Kempis, it is a handbook for Christian spiritual life. The Imitation is perhaps the most widely read devotional work next to the Bible, and is regarded as a devotional and religious classic. Its popularity was immediate in the 1400's, and it was printed 745 times before 1650. Apart from the Bible, no book has been translated into more languages than the Imitation of Christ.

Coming next week (Friday, May 17), Uvula Audio will be bookcasting the novelette "Transylvania Mission" by Lavie Tidhar. The award-winning author Tidhar wrote this novelette for his science fiction anthology "Hebrew Punk".
The story is a sort of twisted world war II adventure tale—ala Indiana Jones, if Professor Jones was Jewish and immortal. The protagonist of the story is Rat who is a Jewish vampire. He and his band of partisans are pitted against a band of N**i werewolves searching for the legendary Vlad the Impaler in the hopes of enlisting his help in their war. I could certainly give more details to this description, but I will let you discover just how awesome it is for yourself.

This narration was originally broadcast to the world at large by the well-known SF podcast Star Ship Sofa (http://www.starshipsofa.com) on May 26, 2009. We present the story here for archival purposes and to make it more widely available to the public to enjoy.
