So today has been interesting.
As many of you know, I have voted in every election I could since I was able. I have been registered under many different parties because I don’t vote for a party, I vote for a candidate. Pretend political lines do not hold my allegiance.
Although I have lost faith, not only in the democratic process, but in the aptitude of the United States government as a whole, I have voted.
The lesser of two evils was never an acceptable concept to me. I have a very hard time wrapping my head around voting for someone you don’t believe in. I understand that compromises are common and, as a people, essential. However, I am never less than baffled at the willingness to accept sub par candidates as a people.
When I would even hint at the idea that I didn’t think voting mattered, I was scorned; usually being told I was the problem or I can’t complain if I don’t vote.
When I have started mentioning that I am voting socialist this election, instead of the above comments, they have turned into: “you have to vote blue in order to protect democracy”, “what a privileged thing to say/do”, “it will
Never work”, “so you want Trump to win?”, “now isn’t the time”, “I totally understand but…”, “insert something about project 2025” etc etc etc
To be fair, I’m not trying to minimize trumps awfulness, the scariness of project 2025, or the need to protect democracy. However, how are we protecting democracy by bullying each other into voting for Candidates we KNOW aren’t acceptable? And what semblance of democracy are we protecting? Because that seems like the very opposite of democracy to me. What kind of a system would be able to tell you doing the right thing is voting for the bad guy so the badder guy doesn’t come hurt you and take everything you hold dear instead of just not allowing people to get the job who don’t work for the people anyway?
Claudia de la Cruz and Karina Garcia may not win the election. But they arent insulating elites. They are for a free Palestine. They want to hold law enforcement accountable. They are for the end of capitalism and the empowerment of the working class.
How can we call ourselves allies when we aren’t even able to be brave enough to cast a ballot differently than what we’ve been told it HAS so be? No ballot is a magic ticket will make things better. But there are candidates that will put us on the path.
Only you know your character and what is important to you.
The time has come to be brave. Revolution is uncomfortable. It’s scary. And can be deadly.
It already is.
We are being murdered by capitalism- in all its various forms. It has to stop and we have to stop it. We can’t keep doing the same things over and over and expect different results.
Contrary to some, the time is indeed now.
We don’t have to win an election to have revolution. It’s already begun. Keep it going.
Be brave.
