🐶 The title of this book may sound slightly confusing, is the book about a dog?! About a hen?! Both!! It’s about a dog called Hen. And now that we got ahead with the introductions, let’s just meet Hen and learn a bit more about him?!

📖 My Dog, Hen | ✍️🎨 David Mackintosh | 📚

🐶 Hen is at the animal shelter and is adopted by a beautiful family who is kind and sweet. And as the little boy so well puts it: Why do they need a brand new dog when Hen is as good as new to them?

🐶 When they get home, they give him food, water, a comfy bed and lots of toys. The problem is Hen eats his food but he also starts eating all the rest: the food bowl, his bed, his toys, even the house’s furniture. The little boy spends all his pocket money in new toys for him, hoping it will solve the problem, but it doesn’t. Thankfully, his grandmother has the best idea and one worth giving a try. Will it work though?!

✍️ Beautifully written, fun and filled with clever metaphors (not always very obvious, which I love) this is a book about kindness to nature, animals and to the Earth. The message of love is beautifully captured, even after Hen destroys the house, there is never even a mention to returning him to the shelter, because that isn’t an option. Instead they give him time to adapt and love. Also worth mentioning, Hen is a mongrel and comes from a shelter - another message of kindness. And finally, the last highlight I’d like to point out: the fact this book encourages recycling instead of buying new - with things, but also with the dog - so clever and sweet!

🎨Illustrated in blue, black and red, the artwork is artistic, distinctive, perfectly capturing the family’s essence.
