The Annual Metaphor Editors’ Conference is scheduled to be held virtually from 9 am to 2:30 pm MDT on March 25, 2021, with sessions open to the public from 9 am - 12:30 pm and again from 2:30 - 3 pm. Morning events will consist of WSU Creative Writing Faculty readings and panels, followed by two Open Mic sessions. Attendees will learn about things from art, music, poetry, and creative writing.

Our keynote address will be given by Dr. Clint Smith III, who will discuss his poetry collection and a forthcoming book of narrative nonfiction. He will speak on how powerful the nature of a single narrative, added to a collective narrative, helps address issues facing liberal arts students. Through their courage and ability to share their own narrative, individuals can achieve greater understanding, empathy, and humanity. Q&A to follow.

Next Thursday: Metaphor, Weber State University's literary journal, invites the public to virtually attend our annual Metaphor Editor's Conference (MEC, formally H-SEC).

We are also pleased to announce that we have teamed up with the National Undergraduate Literature Conference (NULC) to provide this special event!

MEC will be held next week on Thursday, March, 25th from 9 am – 2:30 pm MDT. An additional keynote provided by NULC will take place in the evening.

Who We Are
Metaphor is an annual interdisciplinary journal created entirely by undergraduate students which publishes art, fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, music, dance, theater, and other artistic media. Our mission is to facilitate an environment that encourages students at Weber State University to express their ideas through literature and the arts. Additionally, our journal provides training and experience for staff members in the editing and publication fields.

What is MEC?
Every year, we receive hundreds of submissions from Weber State Undergrads hoping to be published, and only a fraction of those make it into each edition. We want to help get your work published into Metaphor! This event replaces our popular High School Editor's Conference (HSEC) from previous years. MEC is free and open to the public (with the exception of the afternoon sessions 12:30 to 2:30 reserved for high school students and WSU Undergrads). Morning events will consist of WSU Creative Writing Faculty panels followed by an afternoon Open Mic and student-run creative workshops.

What is NULC?
After the hiatus last year due to COVID-19, the National Undergraduate Literature Conference (NULC) returns in 2021 and is scheduled to be held virtually at 6 pm MDT on March 25, 2021. To announce the winners of our fall Flash Fiction contest, we will be hosting a virtual Open Mic Night on Friday, November 20th at 7:00pm! Each winner will read his or her piece and then the remaining time will be dedicated to everyone who would like to share a work or two of their own. Details for Zoom registration will be posted on the website within the following days and contest winners will be notified via email once judging has concluded early next week. We hope to see you all there!

In a slump? Needing some motivation to write? We have the cure! This month, is hosting a Flash Fiction contest. What are the rules?
Submissions must be:
•250 to 1000 words
•12 pt. font (Times New Roman or Garamond)
•double-spaced in either Microsoft Word or Open Office format

Note that students can submit up to 3 pieces total. Please send all submissions to our email (link in bio) with the words “Flash Fiction Contest” in the subject line. Prizes are offered to the top three submissions, with a chance for the top to be featured in the 40th Anniversary edition of Metaphor. Deadline for submissions is Friday, October 23, 2020 at 11:59pm.
