If you are new here, Azibo and Gyasi are brothers who share a love for reading (especially graphic novels). They help run our family publishing company. Gyasi is known as the calculator (he is good at math and strategy) and Azibo is the secretary (he likes art and is a budding marketer, but for now keeps the calendar book and helps generate ideas).

You will hear and see more of them as they share young Yazzy’s adventure in Here Comes the Morning!

The Rising of the Gods is a stunning book of photographs and writings based on a male empowerment retreat of the same name held recently in Saint Lucia. It is inspired by the work of Bobo Shanti priest and herbal physician with chapters grounded in pan-African worldview and an intent to lead the reader toward self-determination.

It views manhood via educators such as professors and plus wellness entrepreneurs like .therapy and other men of various ages and vocations. War interrupted his adolescent years when he was taken prisoner to mountain fortress. There, he met other captive children of all the royal houses in realm. Yet, strangely, they were not tortured or mistreated. On the contrary, they were educated! They were educated about a vision of a united Ethiopia, educated about creating an Ethiopia so powerful that it could even take back Jerusalem from the Muslims.

He would eventually find favor and be released by his captor (Emperor Tewodros II) but later learned that his former captor seemed to be losing his mind and was becoming too brutal to realize his vision. Blessed Kwanzaa! Today we consider Imani (Faith): to believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

When we think of faith, we draw a lot of inspiration from Emperor Haile Selassie I and Empress Menen Asfaw of Ethiopia. Together, they put tremendous faith in their people, and vice versa, as they worked to transform their ancient realm into a modern nation. Of course, they faced war and adversity but they were fully grounded in their faith while working proactively to secure the future. In the end, they were very successful!

Habari Gani?! Hold the faith! The Bookman family is wishing for our people untold blessings and strength in these times. Let’s keep on moving toward our goals!

We work and we play together, and we go at our own pace together, because we’re in this together.

Blessed Kwanzaa! Today we consider Kujichagulia (Self-determination): to define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves.

We’ve said this before but Kujichagulia is represented in our very own company. Our founder determined for himself his own name and how he would tell his own story. He created Bookman Express and published a memoir, Tried & True, documenting some transformative years of his life.

That same drive to share and tell their owns stories is represented in the Sweet Thorns poetry collection of and in the mixed genre collection by , KingSun. Both authors also used their works to speak their personal truths, which is an important step in self-determination.
