September opened with a jam-packed slate of ultrarunning opportunities in New England, with the TARC Fall Classic in Massachusetts and a pair of events in Maine. The Fall Classic will be featured in a separate story, but this week’s roundup begins in Maine where runners took part in both the Cherry Hill Farm Ultra in Gorham and the Last Man Standing Ultramarathon at Pineland Farms. From there we head beyond the region and catch up on how New Englanders fared at ultras in Washington and Florida. Welcome to September and the start of the busiest part of the year in ultrarunning.

August came to a close with a jam-packed weekend of ultramarathon running in New England, most of it at official races. Runners took on challenging events in Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. We have the first two–the Five Fields Farm 50K and Black Bear Trail Races 50K–included in this edition of the roundup, while results from the Ocean State Ultra were unavailable at the time of publication. But we lead off with a massive ultra effort at a self-styled event in Maine where Bradford Eslin ran 100 miles and raised more than $17,500 to help the homeless in his hometown.

In a big weekend of ultrarunning, perhaps the most high-impact performance didn't happen at a race. It happened in Bangor, Maine. This will get a mention in the roundup later this week, but Bradford Eslin's 100-mile fundraiser to help the homeless is still racking up donations to help those in need. Check it out and chip in if you can.

The Berkshire Ultra Running Community for Service closed out its 2026 race series with an exclamation point at the Jug End Loop Ultra.

Not only did runners enjoy good weather, mostly dry trails and abundance of positive vibes at the 11th annual 6-hour and 4.2-mile trail races on Saturday, Aug. 22, at Jug End State Reservation in Egremont, Mass., but they also delivered sizeable donations to the Dana-Farber Cancer Center and Louison House through their fundraising efforts.

It’s late August, and surprisingly calm on the ultrarunning scene in New England. After several jam-packed weekends of racing, just two ultras took place in the region during the Aug. 20-22 weekend. One was the Jug End Loop Ultra in Massachusetts, which we have covered in a separate story. The other took place in Maine where Michael Conley blazed to a new course record and successful title defense at the Firebird Trail Races 50K. We have that race covered along with an ultra in nearby New York in this edition of the roundup.

The mountains called ultrarunners to New Hampshire for a grueling weekend of racing and adventure in the White Mountains at the fifth annual Jigger Johnson Ultras. Many New Englanders stayed close to home to take part in the event’s 100-mile, 50-mile and 20-mile races, while others headed to Connecticut for the Shenepsit Striders’ Summer Fat Ass 8-hour run. We have both of those events included in this edition of the roundup, as well as a few other races from throughout the country that took place during the Aug. 14-16 weekend.

A hot New England weekend saw ultrarunners take on several events from Aug. 7-9 throughout the region, including the hottest Anchor Down Ultra ever in Rhode Island and the Lover’s Lane 12- and 6-hour races in Vermont, as well as a pair of Massachusetts ultras–the TARC Summer Classic and the BURCS Sweltering Summer 8-Hour Ultra. We have the two Massachusetts races covered in separate recaps, but in this edition of the roundup we begin in Rhode Island and Vermont before catching up on how New Englanders performed at other ultras across the country, including Tobias Tello’s victory and course record at the Murderkill Ultramarathons in Virginia.
