Part I of this week’s roundup focused on results in the West; here in Part II we turn to the East, and what a weekend it was. Bubba’s Backyard Ultra in New Hampshire was the place to be in New England during the Oct. 3-5 weekend. There were two additional 50Ks in the region–the Little Duck 50K in Maine and the CT Donut Run 31.5-miler in Connecticut (results from both events were unavailable at the time of publication)–but Bubba’s was the only place where you could literally run for days on end. A few runners did, led by Lukas Janulaitis who endured 53 hours on a 3.5-mile loop course to win. He had plenty of company for most of those hours as the two best male and female performances in event history were tuned in. In addition to Bubba’s, we head to Pennsylvania where a New Englander earned a top-10 finish at the Black Forest Ultra.

October started fast for New England ultrarunners. There were three events here in the region during the Oct. 3-5 weekend, but New Englanders also traveled to several other ultras throughout the country for some hard-earned finishes and strong results. Here in Part I of this week’s roundup we catch up on results from the West, including ultras in Colorado, Arizona, California, Idaho and Utah. We begin in Colorado, where Connecticut’s Chase Smith outdueled his younger brother for a victory and course record.

For years, the trails of the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge in Sudbury, Mass., have been a hidden gem for New England trail-runners. Miles of wide, rolling trails wind through the forested land, past a handful of eerie, abandoned military bunkers, surrounded by a variety of wildlife that call the refuge home. It’s scenic, serene, and soothing – and it’s Judy Proteau’s favorite place to run.

Race Director Benn Griffin organized the inaugural Notchview Invitational as a supplement to the Notchview Ultra that took place in July. The invitation-only event welcomed those who have participated in five or more Notchview Ultras or been runners or volunteers in each in-person BURCS event this year. The Notchview Invitational, held Sept. 27-28 at Notchview Reservation in Windsor, Mass., invited those runners to run a 50K, a 50-miler or a 24-hour event on the venue’s signature 1.9-mile loop course.

The ultrarunning scene was hopping in New England to close out September. A trio of events took place in Massachusetts – the MetroWest Backyard Ultra, and a pair of new events, the Race for the Refuge and the BURCS Notchview Invitational. We’ll have those covered in separate recaps, but there was plenty of additional action in the region, including the classic Vermont 50, and the Farm to Farm Ultra in Maine. We have both of those covered, as well as ultra results in Georgia and Colorado, in this week’s roundup.

In Part I of this week’s roundup, we caught up with New Englanders at five ultramarathons in the West. Here in Part II, we close out our coverage of the Sept. 19-21 weekend by returning to the East Coast, starting in New Hampshire where a number of New Englanders ventured to the White Mountains for a challenging day on the Kilkenny Ridge. Additionally, we catch up with results from the Wild Goose Trail Festival in New Jersey, and the Georgia Jewel.

The Sept. 19-21 weekend saw several dozen ultrarunners tackle the Kilkenny Ridge in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. It was the lone ultra in New England during the weekend, and we’ll have it covered in Part II of this week’s roundup along with a few other ultras on the East Coast. But here in Part I we head West and catch up on New Englanders who raced hard and secured finishes at distances from 50K to 100 miles in Arizona, Idaho, California, and Oregon.
