"Monsters are not unfamiliar artistic terrain and we are allowed to confront them because we have constructed a space for them to inhabit; they are allowed because they are evil, they are dumb, the heroine defeats them and they exist in a realm that is not human. They are other-than-human, just as they are less-than-human and they are acceptable only because it is acceptable to treat them with disgust."

Join us in congratulating Terrance Hayes, issue 04 contributor, on becoming a MacArthur Fellow! We will release his odd and lovely poem "Instructions for a Séance with Vladimirs" later this week.

Terrance Hayes, a nationally renowned poet and a University of Pittsburgh writing professor, was in a Highland Park coffee shop a little more than a week ago when he got the call of a lifetime. Stunned, he turned to his wife, Yona Harvey, likewise a poet and Pitt professor, and shared the incredible…

"I am writing this to you because I know better than to assume that I’ll always be around. That’s what cancer does to you, I guess—you start to take precautions. You wear a helmet, you take your vitamins, you back up your computer files on a flash drive. Suddenly you become very aware that everything that can go wrong might actually go wrong."

“I think my grandfather may have the correct approach to art. He’s had a long career, and in his retirement he’s been working on building a boat. I doubt he’ll ever finish it, but I don’t think that’s particularly important to him. He wakes up every morning, drinks his cup of coffee, then goes out to his workshop to sand a tiny portion of wood. He doesn’t need to finish that boat to pay the rent. He can afford to have some distance from it, so he gets to enjoy it. He looks at that boat tenderly, like he looks at his grandkids. He gets to have a dream without the necessity of achieving it.”

With sustained violence taking place worldwide, we turn to a past interview with photographer and activist Jaber Al Azmeh as he reflects on the Syrian Revolution:

"This is not a new situation – people's liberation movements in the world have long been faced by the world rulers. And while people try to unite in support of each other in their quest for freedom, the dominant regimes are doing a better job collaborating to face their biggest threat: the freedom of the people.

Syrian people are left alone to face madness, the regime has been committing massacres for the past two years and the world is almost silent! Just a few days ago the Syrian regime hit Damascus suburbs with chemical weapons killing at least 1,300 Syrians among them a high percentage of children, and now politicians are debating whether it's time to interfere or not. Anyway if they do, it will not be to end the madness, this comes very late and if anyone was genuine about saving the people – they would have helped a long time ago."

"I think the gallery model is changing..."

Read more on Scott White Contemporary Art's pivot toward a 'private,' more client-centric gallery model.

Longtime art dealer and gallerist Scott White has shuttered his La Jolla gallery and will move his operation to the former Jett Gallery location in Little Italy (989 W. Kalmia St.) and make the majority of his business private.
