YES, THIS IS LIFE IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Not only is Taylor Swift Time Magazine’s “Person of the Year,” but today TheCAT learned one of the finalists was Barbie-yes , a doll.
My late and very missed friend Jim Wilson described such as “the bottom of the journalistic p**s pot.”

BILLS TAKE A “DUB” FROM KANSAS CITY

This time a ref’s call went Buffalo’s way. It happened when Travis Kelce caught a pass and then threw a perfect lateral to Kadarius Toney who ran it in for a TD.
BUT! that same Kadarius Toney was flagged for offensive off sides and the big play was erased. Replay clearly showed the refs made the correct call so this was no fluke.
Bottom line: Bills 20, Chiefs 17.
Bills RB James Cook had a big game rushing for 58 yards and receiving 83 more including a nifty touch down catch in the first quarter.
Josh Allen was 23 of 42 for 233 yards. He threw one TD pass, but also a costly interception that Kansas City worked to close the score to 14-7, Bills.
So, another nail biter, but this time the Bills avoided a last minute swoon.

FOOTBALL WRITER MAKES A CASE FOR FIRING BILLS HEAD COACH

(Note: Coach McDermott on social media said his “head has been spinning” since reading the Tyler Dunne critique. McDermott called the article “a slap against his character.”)

The writer is Tyler Dunne and his blog is “Go Long.” Google it and then choose “The McDermott Problem, Part 1.”
There are three parts total that can be read free. The entire series is 20,000 words long and requires a subscription, however the freebies total a compelling think piece.
Dunne argues that McDermott is a competent defensive coach, but a poor head coach who freezes in close games and fails to properly motivate the team, especially QB Josh Allen, who Dunne describes as a Marvel Comics type superman.
I lived in Pittsburgh for 16 years and saw that the Rooney family stuck with their Steeler head coachs: They hired, but did not fire. And, believe it or don’t, the Steelers fans kvetched plenty about head coaching decisions. When the much favored Steelers lost the 1995 AFL Championship game 17-13 to the San Diego squad, there were many voices calling for Bill Cowher’s head.
BUT, Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin all have Super Bowl rings. The Rooneys stayed with them and they ultimately produced.
The Bills are still trying after four appearances, all under Marv Levy.

IF MCDERMOTT GOES; WHO THEN?

Good NFL head coaches are hard to find; great ones more so.
I personally like Miami head man Mike McDaniel, but McDermott and the Bills beat up the Dolphins this season, a loss McDaniel termed “humbling.”

INJURIES AND BREAKS

Last season the Bills suffered injuries to include Damar Hamlin’s near death and an exhausting schedule due to weather. This season, the team’s six losses have all been close. The Bills could be sporting a much more respectable record.
Injuries this season have also taken a toll, particularly on Defense. Players like Tre White and Matt Milano are not easily replaced.

So, count me as skeptical that firing McDermott is the right response to the first disappointing season in his tenure.

“PERSON OF INTEREST” NAMED IN THE 1972 MURDER OF PATRICIA FAIRBANKS

MAYVILLE- William A. Swartzman, now deceased, was named a “person of interest” Wednesday in the late 1972 murder of 14 year-old Patricia Fairbanks. Fairbanks mother reported her daughter missing from their family home at 19 West 9th Street in Jamestown. On December 29, 1972, Patricia Fairbanks body was located in the rear yard of 14 West 9th Street in Jamestown. The cause of death was determined to be a homicide. The Jamestown Police Department conducted an extensive investigation for a number of years attempting to identify the person who killed Fairbanks. No suspect was ever arrested and the case has been unsolved for the past 51 years.

In March of 2023 the Jamestown Police Department coordinated with the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office to re-open the investigation, and the case was assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Unsolved Cases Team for further investigation. Investigators reviewed the entire original homicide case file, worked with the Jamestown Police Department’s Evidence Unit to transfer all of the physical evidence collected in the murder to the Sheriff’s Office Evidence Unit, and spent months interviewing numerous witnesses throughout Chautauqua County and Northwest Pennsylvania.

Today, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office announces the identification of a person of interest in the murder of Patricia Fairbanks. The person of interest is William A. Swartzman, who at the time of Fairbanks murder was a 44 year-old resident of Jamestown. In addition to residing in Jamestown, Swartzman had previously resided in South Ripley, the borough of North East Pennsylvania, Erie Pennsylvania, and Warren Pennsylvania. Swartzman died of natural causes at his residence in Warren, Pennsylvania in 1997.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office is requesting the assistance of the public as the investigation continues. We are desirous of speaking to anyone who was in contact with Swartzman while he was in Jamestown between the months of August 1972 and January 1973. If you had a face-to-face encounter with Swartzman in Jamestown in an area bounded by West Eighth Street to the south, West Tenth Street to the north, North Main Street to the east, and Washington Street to the west you are asked to call Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Investigators today. If you were the victim of a crime that Swartzman committed, whether it occurred in the state of New York or the state of Pennsylvania, you are asked to call the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office at the numbers below.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office continues to work on this case cooperatively with the Jamestown Police Department and the New York State Police Forensic Laboratory. Updates will be provided to the public at the appropriate time.

Information about this case should be directed to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office Unsolved Cases Team at (716) 753-4578 or (716) 753-4579.

JAMESTOWN MAN PLEADS GUILTY IN THE HOMICIDE OF JESUS BATISTA-PEREZ

(Note, while this guilty plea was entered 11/13/23, a media release was not sent until 12/5/23)
MAYVILLE-Kevin Roldan-Pantojas, 24, Jamestown, pled guilty on November 13th to Manslaughter in the 1st degree, a class B felony, for the homicide of Jesus Batista -Perez with occurred in August 2022 on Prendergast Street in Jamestown. DA Jason Schmidt said “Shootouts and gun violence may seem more commonplace than ever before here in our community but we are doing everything in our power, with the limited resources available to us, to reverse the tide. From the time of this shooting that afternoon on August 19, 2022, to the day that Mr. Roldan-Pantojas pled, Jamestown Police detectives, myself and my Felony Team here at the DA’s Office, including our Investigators, have worked tirelessly to ensure a conviction in this matter. One way or the other, whether by plea or after trial conviction, we were committed to seeing this through to conviction. Unfortunately, we live at a time when the resolution of this homicide is not the end. We have multiple homicides lined up for trial in the next few months and continue to do the work necessary to ensure convictions in those cases, too.” The DA would like to thank the Jamestown Police Department for their tireless work on this case. Mr. Roldan-Pantojas is scheduled to be sentenced on January 12, 2024 at 9:00am.

THE BILLS: GOING FORWARD

Few thought Buffalo would be 6 and 6 after 12 games this season, but that is the hard reality.
Now what?
Run the table, that’s what.
The Bills need to win from here on out starting Sunday afternoon in Kansas City.
(Question: Do the Bills ever get KC in Orchard Park?)
So, it’s a tall order, but the playoff winners are virtually always teams that got hot in December.
Go Bills!

GREG RABB EXCORIATES EDDIE SUNDQUIST IN THE POST-JOURNAL’S “LOCAL COMMENTS”

IT’S A COMMENTARY TheCAT WOULD NOT PUBLISH

Our take on former Jamestown Councilman-at-large Greg Rabb is very simple: He’s a cry baby, a whiner, who claims to be a victim.
Rabb unloads on outgoing Jamestown Mayor Eddie Sundquist in a screed published in Saturday’s (12/2/23) Post Journal. But, no surprise to those who know Rabb, it’s really all about Rabb.
Rabb happens to be, like Sundquist, a gay man and if you spend any time with Rabb this is the central point of his life. He talks about it, taught about it in his JCC classes, hands out literature about it and makes clear that he is not only a gay man, but a pioneer both in “coming out” and seeking public office as a gay man.
Rabb writes that a “tragic” part of this is Buffalo Councilman Mitch Nowakowski, “my former student and another gay Democrat” supporting Sundquist’s reelection bid “even though I asked him not to because of what Sundquist did to me.”
Just exactly what the mayor specifically did to Rabb remains unclear, but the unintended point here is “what Sundquist did to me.” It’s all about Rabb.
For those who know the former Council President, that’s not a surprise: Greg Rabb’s sexual orientation was and is the central fact of his life.
We are surprised The Post-Journal published this commentary, and only comment ourselves to provide what we believe is needed context.

PREDATORS CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF iPHONE’S NEW FEATURE

If the kids have an iphone and it is updated with ios17 police around the country are concerned that predators can take advantage of the “Air Drop” feature.
Why? Because it allows anyone running ios17 to gain access to important information merely by placing their phone close to another with “Air Drop.” Unfortunately the latest Apple operating system comes with “Air Drop” enabled so you have to disable it.
Here’s how;
Open the “Settings” option
Tap the “General” option
Tap the “AirDrop” tab, which controls the file-sharing features of the phone
Once AirDrop is selected, turn off the “Bringing Devices Together” option to disable NameDrop.

“MAJOR PIECE OF ILLEGAL DRUG SYSTEM THAT HAS TAKEN COUNTLESS LIVES” SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS IN STATE PRISON

MAYVILLE-John Anzalone, 50, Jamestown, was sentenced Monday by Chautauqua County Court Judge David Foley to twelve years’ determinate in state prison plus five years’ post release supervision. Anzalone was found guilty after a jury trial concluded September 19, 2023, that he was guilty of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 2nd Degree, a class A-II felony.

Before sentencing, Asst. DA Erik Bentley argued to the Court that the defendant “is a piece of the illegal drug system that has taken countless lives. Bentley asked the Court to send a message to the criminals who are a part of that system that the “endless cycle of addiction and destruction brought about by dealing drugs will not be tolerated in Chautauqua County.”

BILLS LOSE BACK BREAKER IN PHILLY

FINAL IN OT: Eagles 37, Bills 34

Buffalo beat themselves again; taking penalties and blowing two field goal attempts on their way to a 6-6 record while Philadelphia moved to 10-1.
Bad calls also hurt the Bills, particularly not calling an obvious horse collar on Josh Allen and instead calling Allen for deliberate downing. The Bills can expect a letter from the league apologizing for that one. The Bills were flagged 11 times compared to four for Philly.
Buffalo won the statistical battle: 40:30 time of possession versus 26:50 for the Eagles, 505 total yards versus 378, 59 per cent of third down conversions versus 36 per cent.
Looming large were two Bills missed field goals; one for only 34 yds was blocked the other 48-yd try was missed.

TheCAT ISN’T BUYING IT

NY’s Senior Senator Chuck Schumer is on record that Chineses Dictator Xi’s promise to President Biden about curtailing Fentanyl production may help solve our state’s overdose epidemic. That seems unlikely.
Primarily there is no shortage of Fentanyl here or anywhere else. And it takes only a tiny dose of the drug to cause death. Drug trafficking organizations typically distribute fentanyl by the kilogram. One kilogram of fentanyl has the potential to kill 500,000 people. One kilogram is 2.2 pounds. How many kilograms of this narcotic do you guess are already here? How much can the Mexican cartels produce in illicit laboratories?
So count TheCAT as very skeptical regarding Sen. Schumer’s claim.

BILLS REDISCOVER OFFENSE; WHIP THE JETS 32-6
DEFENSE? JETS DIDN’T CONVERT A THIRD DOWN

Buffalo again looked like a serious playoff team Sunday as they pummeled the Jets 32-6 in front of a delighted home crowd in Orchard Park.
The Bills were solid on both sides; laying waste to NY’s Offense while smartly moving the ball themselves.
Their AFC rivals appeared near helpless, making four turnovers while allowing six sacks and holding the ball only 23 minutes and nine seconds.
Josh Allen was 20 of 32 for 275 yds. and three TD’s with only one interception.
Buffalo looked the part of a contender Sunday. Now they have to continue.

Notes: Allen (205) also passed Patrick Mahomes (204) on Sunday for the most combined passing and rushing touchdowns in a player's first six seasons in NFL history.
—Bills wide receiver Khalil Shakir set a career record with an 81-yard touchdown, surpassing his previous long catch of 31 yards.
Shakir’s touchdown is also the longest reception by an NFL receiver this season, beating Brandon Aiyuk’s 76-yard touchdown for San Francisco.

DUNKIRK MAN PLEDS GUILTY TO THEFT OF GOVERNMENT MONEY

BUFFALO-Marqus Singh, 31, Dunkirk, pleaded guilty Friday in U.S. District Court to theft of government money, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Franz M. Wright, in charge of the case, said that in July 2020, Singh learned of a scheme to receive money through a government program that was designed to assist those impacted by COVID-19. While in the Western District of New York, Singh provided his identification information and social security number to a co-conspirator. A few weeks later, Singh received a check totaling $11,454 from the Puerto Rico Department of Labor and Human Resources.
The money used to fund the check was issued through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Singh did not or has not resided or worked in Puerto Rico and was therefore legally ineligible to receive the money. In August 2020, Singh deposited the $11,454 check into a checking account at bank in Dunkirk. He then withdrew some of the funds from the account, which he provided to his co-defendants as part of the scheme.

BILLS SACK OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR KEN DORSEY IN AN EFFORT TO SALVAGE THIS SEASON
QB COACH JOE BRADY WILL ASSUME DORSEY’S DUTIES

Buffalo Bills Offensive Coordinator Ken Dorsey is no longer in the hot seat; he’s been relieved of his duties and replaced by Joe Brady, promoted from Quarterbacks Coach.
Dorsey’s fate was no surprise. It comes after weeks of grumbling and second guessing of the 42-year-old’s perceived bland play calling and immediately follows the teams dismal Monday Night 24-22 loss to Denver.

BILLS BUMBLE AWAY FIFTH LOSS
BRONCOS TRIUMPH 24-22

Denver kicker Will Lutz missed a field goal with seconds left, BUT the Bills had 12 men on the field and Lutz got another try and converted his second attempt to gain a 24-22 victory over Buffalo who is now 5-5 on the year.
The hometown crew turned the ball over four times which Denver turned into six points.
It was heartbreaking and ugly; yet another game where the Bills struggled in the first half, and committed key penalties.
In his postgame media conference QB Josh Allen, obviously crestfallen, offered little solace for disappointed fans who are watching the teams dwindling postseason
chances.

MOTHER/DAUGHTER FANTASY ENDS BADLY FOR DUNKIRK MAN

BUFFALO-Michael Fratini, 38, Dunkirk, pleaded guilty in Federal Court Thursday to attempted receipt of child po*******hy, which carries a mandatory minimum penalty of five years in prison and a maximum of 20 years.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Aaron J. Mango and Franz M. Wright, who are handling the case, stated that Fratini used his cellular telephone to solicit n**e photos and videos of the pre-pubescent daughters of a female acquaintance, whom he met in October 2021 through a dating application. After meeting in person, the female acquaintance did not hear from Fratini again for several months. In March 2022, they spoke over the telephone and Fratini told her that he had a mother/daughter fantasy. He then sent a follow-up text message asking for videos and/or pictures of her daughters to fulfill his fantasies. After receiving the text message, the female acquaintance filed a report with the Sheriff’s Office. At the direction of the Sheriff’s Office, she continued text message conversations with Fratini. On March 18, 2022, investigators surveilled Fratini leaving his workplace at the time, the U.S. Postal Service on Grant Street in Buffalo, and travel to an Amherst hotel where he was expecting to meet the female acquaintance. After arriving at the hotel, Fratini was taken into custody.
