The beginning of a vision board... actually it's a vision wall. I'll probably add more words, like community and liberation, but this year I want to be part of creating and sharing images that REALLY feel good. My biggest focus for ESJ this year though, is for this to become an affirming space for Black and Indigenous folks working within and around sustainability in fashion. Share your knowledge; we value and listen to you here. Your lived experiences matter. Your wisdom is key. I am hiring and building a team of contributing writers this spring. Stay tuned! 😭🙏🏽
Here's to creating more beautiful things, raw and from a place of love.✨

P.S. I have some updates for you on print issue 7. Check stories for those and look out for an email, coming to your inbox this weekend!

One thing I know I'll do as I move forward with ESJ, is plant my feet more solidly on the vision of what I wish to see the magazine and platform become. Even with this year's unexpectedness, I wish I would've created some sort of visual guide for the [few] things I knew I could control. I'm getting to that, making an actual vision guide or board for ESJ, as soon as I get the last written pieces off for design and layout for print Issue No. 7. 😊 Thank you all for your love, support, and patience this year. I'll be back next week with updates on the print mag and hopefully with some news on where we're going from here.

“As a Black person, or as an Indigenous person, we’re always in the position where we’re having to do the work to undo the things that we never had any part in to begin with,” said Katie Pruett, the founder of ESJ.

"Thanksgiving is steeped in America’s history of genocide and theft. The weekend of frenzied consumerism that follows further contributes to issues of racism and classism in this country. Join us in a conversation exploring why reparations and a redistribution of funds for Black and Indigenous led organizations is necessary. We will discuss what it means to dismantle the systems of oppression America has been built on."
This Friday at 1 p.m. CDT, join us for the 'Deconstructing America's History and Future' panel.

To my peers in this space, self-care can also look like taking a break, turning off CNN and not posting/reposting on the election. We know the work we do is ongoing and won't stop no matter who's in office. Using education and creative means, we are continuously fighting for equity within the fashion [sustainable fashion] industry. Our work to disrupt and dismantle white supremacy within and beyond fashion is what we've been about. Don't feel guilty for placing your energy there. I don't! 🖤🖤 Katie, founder & editor-in-chief

"You may be wondering what archaeology can tell us about present days practices of sustainability needed today. The everyday choices we make in our current lives, what we eat, what we wear, the structures we build to shelter ourselves, all of these things leave material signatures that eventually make their way underground. As an archaeologist, I look at those material remains from past people and interpret peoples’ desires, the natural environment in which they lived, and the social structures that shaped their everyday lives. Since 2009, my work has been sifting through dirt at sites of enslavement in the American South and the Caribbean to examine the material raiments that Black people left behind so that these people's histories no longer remain askew silenced or erased from our collective history." Ayana Omilade Flewellen for Issue No. 7.

What are we actually sustaining if we're not sustaining communities? I'm on the last bit of copyedits for pieces written from every angle on Black sustainability and cultural preservation for Issue No 7. How can we build anything sustainable without an acknowledgement and understanding of the truth of what our communities are, what we've contributed, and we represent? This is also important as we continue to "grow" the sustainable fashion space. There is no sustainability without community. 🖤 Katie

Back in 2017 (Issue No. 4), we introduced and their ongoing h**p research, and touched on some of the benefits of h**p. In the latest issue, we revisit the h**p discussion and talk more in-depth about regenerative agriculture as it relates to fashion, but with historical context, e.g. Black farmers "using heritage farming practices to improve the land and undo damage." 🌱

It's not just about promoting brands for you to shop, it's us building relationships and honoring the shared ideas around creating fashion in the most thoughtful ways. We form these relationships with people who run these businesses, most have become our friends and our readers have a chance at building a real connection as well. It's a really unique and intentional way to engage and one facet of ESJ print mags that I'm most proud to continue to grow.

"We vote for our own capacity to continue to do the work that will bring about change." Angela Davis ~ This quote I cling to as we head into the upcoming presidential election. 😬 But also, I'm thinking about the start of a new season and how it's the perfect time to reflect on how we can be more intentional in everything we do moving forward. From the type of clothes we purchase and who we purchase them from, to how we discuss ethics and sustainability in fashion and how we mobilize in our local communities....do nothing without intention. 🖤 Katie

I first learned about back in 2016 when I was surfing online, looking for recipe inspiration. Up until then, I hadn't seen many Black-run food and nutrition platforms, and hardly any run by dietitians...AND dieticians who challenge so many aspects of the food-wellness space. From talking racism and privilege in "healthy eating" to addressing fatphobia, Wendy and Jessica have created space for people who often feel left out of conversations surrounding food and health. 🙏🏽
When I ran into them at a restaurant in Austin a couple of years ago, we instantly clicked and talked like we'd known each other for years. I am so happy to finally share a couple of photos from recent shoots, at each of their homes, for the upcoming Issue No. 7 of ESJ. ✨

On Reclaiming Space for Issue No. 7, I saw a quote that captures my thoughts on why it's necessary: "we bring ourselves closer to the freedom our ancestors wanted us to experience, by reclaiming what was stolen and celebrating what still is." ✨ I feel the work we're doing and the new direction of ESJ—which is especially visible in the new print issue—cannot evolve without this [reclaiming]. I am so proud to present the cover for Issue No. 7, featuring my friend and sister in sustainability, . This incredibly special, limited-edition print issue is centered on reclaiming space, and I wanted to fill every page with images of Black beauty, stories, nature, and conversations of what sustainability — in fashion and beyond — actually is and can be.
