Update 1/25: Statement from parents: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1052896724834103&id=243963979060719 📝
-----------
Last night (1/22/19), 200 concerned residents packed a Binghamton School Board meeting in response to four 12-year-old girls being strip searched by East Middle School administrators. The girls were searched for alleged behavioral concerns, which included appearing “hyper and giddy,” according to a letter from Principal Tim Simonds.
This afternoon (1/23/19), Binghamton City School District released a statement to the press, noting:
“A student may, under current law and policy, be searched in a school building by an administrator when the administrator reasonably suspects that a student’s health is in danger or is in possession of a substance that may harm themselves or others. These searches involve an administrator requesting a student to EMPTY THEIR POCKETS, REMOVE THEIR SHOES and/or REMOVE THEIR JACKETS.” [Emphasis added]
This statement does not address or acknowledge the concerns brought up by the victims, who were told to remove their clothing and stand in their undergarments while searches and sobriety tests were conducted.
Three (3) students were made to remove their shirts, and were searched in only their bras. One (1) of those students was also made to pull down her leggings, exposing her underwear. A fourth student refused to remove her clothing, and received in-school suspension as a result.
Additionally, it was noted that insensitive comments were made during the searches by the administering adults, pertaining to the girls’ skin and breasts.
According to BCSD’s own statement, strip searches are not permitted.
•If the Binghamton City School District admits strip searches are not permissible, why were these searches conducted?
•If the Binghamton City School District is denying these searches occurred, why did they give their reasons for administering them? And why was one student suspended after the search? Why did the nurse make comments about the girls' bodies under their clothes?
We believe Black women and girls.
With the release of their statement, the Binghamton City School District is surreptitiously accusing all four girls of lying about their trauma.
As such, the community is being asked to rally behind these girls, once more, on Tuesday, 1/29 for Rally at East Middle: End Child Strip Searches in BCSD Schools.
The Binghamton School Board, Superintendent Tonia Thompson, and the Binghamton City School District have been informed of the expectations of the community.
We will repost those expectations below.
In solidarity,

BCSD Expectations for Accountability
1) Immediately stop the practice of strip searching children for any reason, including and especially in response to "giddiness" or behavioral concerns.
2) Remove Assistant Principal Michelle Raleigh and Principal Tim Simonds from their roles at East Middle, for exhibiting astoundingly poor judgement which resulted in child trauma.
3) Remove the nurse who administered the strip searches (with a revocation of their license pending further review).
4) Publicly apologize to the students, their families, and the community at large for violating the trust of all parties harmed by their actions.
5) Provide alternate instruction for the girls, at either West Middle School or via home instruction, until this situation has been rectified to the satisfaction of the families.
