By Jacob Solis The Nevada Independent Dramatically simplified guidelines published last week by the groups that effectively designate the country’s top research universities could virtually guarantee that UNR and UNLV maintain their desired “R1” status — even as budget woes have forced institutional cuts across the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) this fall. In announcing the new rules, the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Carnegie Foundation argued the new system was designed for clarity and transparency, ending a sprawling 10-criteria matrix for judging research and adding new “multidimensional” categories aimed at better reflecting differences between groupings of similar institutions....

By Amy Alonzo The Nevada Independent For more than 50 years, Rick and B. Ann Lattin operated Lattin Farms in Fallon, a 400-acre farm that started in 1909. But this year, the Lattins, both in their late 70s, laid down their tools, leased their land and stepped back from agricultural production. Their retirement marks the end of an era for the Fallon agricultural community....

Reed High School recently honored alum and sports superstar Gabby Williams with a large mural outside of the school. Gabby Williams graduated from Reed in 2013 and went on to play on championship basketball teams in college at UConn (she now plays on the Seattle Storm in the WNBA) and won a bronze medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. While in high school, Williams was also named the Gatorade Nevada Athlete of the Year in track & field for both the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons....

Andrew BarbanoCommentary A Carson City judge just nuked the state teachers union’s petition to place the Oakland A’s Gomorrah South corporate welfare stadium to a vote of taxpayers who will get stuck with the tab. By Rocio Hernandez The Nevada Independent Principal Jason Mattick prides himself on the welcoming, inclusive environment that he and the staff at Billinghurst Middle School in Reno have fostered. But he said students’ connection to Billinghurst eroded during the pandemic, when schools were forced to shut down and conduct classes virtually. He credits students’ inability to connect with their school to some of the issues schools across the country are experiencing with student attendance and engagement....

Last week, the Sparks High School boys varsity soccer team clinched the Northern Nevada Regional Championship title against Hug High School, and what makes this win so special is that it did so in the 5A division. By Amy Alonzo The Nevada Independent In the 19th century, the federal government, looking to boost railway construction across the relatively undeveloped West, offered railroad companies an incentive: Expand the rail lines and receive alternating sections of land along the railway corridor. The railway companies delivered, laying thousands of miles of track, and in return they received square-mile plots surrounding the tracks....

Like after a great meal of perfectly yummy tacos most of us have said, “Man I could eat nothing but tacos for the rest of my life.” I know I’ve heard something along those lines by others over the years. Sherman R. FrederickProperly Subversive Even though my old newspaper, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, spent many-a column inches chronicling (and sometimes exposing) the self-serving duplicity of Nevada’s late U.S. Senator Harry Reid, I didn’t say a thing when McCarran International Airport was re-named after him. McCarran was a scoundrel in his time, so why not keep the tradition going. Plus, if we’re going to be honest (and I always strive to be when writing to you in these columns), Reid was an unqualified big deal for Nevada....

The covid pandemic changed how and where we work, judging from the surge of remote workers across the country. Even though many offices have opened back up again, many people are still on a hybrid or fully flexible/remote schedule. However, distractions at home can make it hard to get any real work done (or have a quiet place to get on a Zoom or conference call) and coworking spaces can fill that need....

By Eric Neugeboren and Rocio Hernandez The Nevada Independent Ignacio Prado has noticed a change at Futuro Academy in East Las Vegas ever since the pandemic: More parents are keeping their kids at home if they are sick. It’s a factor that Prado, the K-5 charter school’s executive director, says is contributing to the school’s absenteeism rates, which decreased in the 2022-23 school year from the year before (from 57 percent to 38 percent) but remains much higher than before the pandemic (28 percent)....

I wrote sometime ago about how baby spiders, in the fall of the year, are kicked out of their family spider homes. They are all given a supply of web that they hang onto and fly through the air to land on something that may catch their web. A fencepost, an edge of a garage, an antenna, a tree. That’s where the new baby spiders start their own spider lives and the circle of life continues....

Andrew BarbanoCommentary Winter 1963 It felt like the world would freeze With John F. Kennedy And the Beatles “The most dangerous animal in world” was probably the title of one of the greatest speeches I ever heard, a work of ironic perfection: It was never given. By Carly Sauvageau The Nevada Independent As the nights lengthen and summer fades into autumn, Northern Nevada housing advocates are calling on their leaders to prioritize preventing weather-related deaths, although local government officials say one of the major proposals is unworkable for now.
