Sherman R. Frederick Sherman R. Frederick/Properly Subversive As the NFL season approaches, I’m reminded of how much football resembles politics. When the Dallas Cowboys take on the NFL Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles next Thursday, all the hype of the pre-season will be tested. And, in the following games, teams such as my Arizona Cardinals or Las Vegas Raiders will face hard reality....

Sherman R. Frederick Sherman R. Frederick/Properly Subversive When a long line of emigrants in covered wagons reached the Sandy River on July 19, 1846, a smaller group turned left off the regular route to try a new shortcut to California. Most wagons stayed on the normal route and made it to Fort Sutter in California on schedule. The left turners — the Donner Party — took the Hastings Cutoff and, well, we all know what happened to them....

No news is good news for drivers as gas prices stayed on track this past week, with the national average returning to $3.16 after a few dips. Meanwhile, Nevada gas prices dropped a penny to an average of $3.73. That’s down 22 cents since last year when Nevadans were paying $3.95 per gallon. With crude oil prices remaining steady, there’s no indication gas prices will make any drastic moves....

Bob Chidester By Bob Chidester Special to the Sparks Tribune After teaching middle school for 20 years full-time in the S.F. Bay Area, I retired, and my wife and I moved to Sparks. The Washoe County School District (WCSD) has daily shortages of dozens of substitutes. For the past 6 years, I have successfully substituted in a dozen WCSD middle schools....

Victor Ventimilla GROTON, Conn. - Petty Officer 1st Class Victor Ventimilla, a native of Sparks, Nevada, is training sailors to continue the U.S. Navy’s 125-year tradition of service under the sea. Ventimilla graduated from Edward C. Reed High School in 2017. The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Sparks. “Growing up, I worked a lot with my uncles, doing odd jobs and fixing things,” Ventimilla said....

Sherman R. Frederick Sherman R. Frederick/Properly Subversive This may seem like a minor writing point, but it’s significant, and it is happening right now in the mainstream media. News organizations have taken to substituting the president’s name for what would generally be called actions taken by the federal government. Consider the alleged civil rights violations at Columbia and the subsequent settlement agreed to by the university....

On July 18, 2025, at approximately 11:42 p.m., officers from the Sparks Police Department and Sparks Fire Department responded to a vehicle versus motorcycle crash at the intersection of O’Callaghan Drive and E. Greenbrae Drive. Preliminary investigation indicates that a juvenile was riding a non-street-legal motorcycle and attempted to pass a vehicle in the intersection. The vehicle was unable to stop in time and struck the motorcycle, ejecting the juvenile rider....

Sherman R. Frederick Properly Subversive/Sherman R. Frederick Look, we all know government isn’t efficient. But, damn, sometimes the sheer lack of common sense that bureaucrats and politicians exhibit with taxpayer money is exasperating. Consider Medicaid, a big-budget health program that is critical for a number of Americans. Yet, it was not until this summer when the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” passed, that our federal government was given (thank you, DOGE) a way to review Medicaid data to prevent double-dipping, state to state....
