B-Club Ready for Revelers, After Complying with NEMA Regulations.

BY EDDY NYADWA. Nairobi's most renowned entertainment joint B - Club, located in Kilimani is now ready for thrilling entertainment to revelers. The club management says it has invested a lot in ensuring that those who visit the club get the best experience.

The club which is located in Galana Plaza attracts the who is who in Nairobi and is frequented majorly by celebrities, rich politicians and their kids.

However, residents of Kilimani area in Nairobi moved to court seeking to have the proprietor of the club punished for defying a court directive requiring it to be shut down.

In the petition, the residents, through Kilimani Project Foundation, said the club has continued to operate in a residential area, despite an order issued in October last year, for it to be closed.

Despite this, the club management says it has now addressed the issues raised by residents concerning Noise levels. It has now installed sound proof acoustics around the interior walls. In addition, mirrors, glasses and wooden raised floors have been put.

Last year together with other clubs in the city, NEMA ORDERED B-Club to shut and only reopen once it was fully compliant with provisions of Environmental Management and Coordination Act, (EMCA), CAP 387 and the Environmental Management and Coordination (Noise and Excessive Vibration Pollution Control) Regulations, 2009.

ODM Resolve to Impeach Obado

BY EDDY NYADWA, Nairobi. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has resolved to impeach the embattled Migori County Governor Okoth Obado. The party on Tuesday instructed its Members of County Assembly from Migori to move the motion after a consultation meeting held in Nairobi.

Obado is currently facing graft charges before the high court and has been released on bail. He has been charged alongside

“Due to corruption charges leveled against Governor Okoth Obado and the decision by the court to bar him from accessing his office, the party in consultations with County MCAs has resolved to have a motion of impeachment against the governor initiated immediately" ODM Party Chairman John Mbadi said after the meeting.

The consultation meeting which was initially to be held at the party's headquarters was moved to a different venue at the last hour. The party did not disclose the reasons for the change. However, sources say that there were fears that Obado supporters had planed to interrupt the meeting.

"There are fears of hooliganism and theft, but that will be dealt with the full force of the law" Mbadi said.

Out of the 41 Orange party MCA's, 37 attended the meeting where the decsison was reached at Unanimously. If the impeachment is successful, Migori county Deputy Governor Nelson Mahanga will take over the running of the county.

Earlier in the day, Obado while speaking to a local radio station expressed fears that there was a plot to kick him out. He however exuded confidence that he would overcome the plot.

Obado and his four children are facing graft charges over an alleged embezzlement of taxpayers’ Sh73.5 million

HYDROPONIC FODDER GROWING FOR LIVESTOCK

This is growing of fodder without soil but in water for a maximum of 6 days.
The water must be safe for human drinking. You can sprout seeds of barley, maize, oats, wheat or sorghum to obtain fodder for cattle, pigs or poultry.

What are the benefits of hydroponics technology?

Fodder is produced within a short a time and in a small area.
2. Fodder is completely edible to livestock –they eat the entire mat, roots and green growth. There is no wastage of feed.
3. Water requirement is less and can be recycled.
4. Minimal running costs; soil preparation, w**d control and post-harvest loss.
5. Minimal incidences of pests and diseases.

Step by step to produce hydroponic fodder

Select seeds without overgrowths and free of chemicals
2. Disinfect seeds by soaking in diluted chlorine solution (similar to what is used to disinfect drinking water) for 2 hours to prevent mould/fungus growth
3. Drain chlorinated water and rinse grains then soak the grains in water for 24 hours to promote water uptake by the grains
4. For grain sowing, measure 2kg of grains for each tray that measures 80cm by 40cm
5. Spread the grains on the trays evenly (not over 3cm deep) to provide enough space for each seed to sprout
6. Ensure your tray has holes that are evenly spread at the bottom for proper drainage of water
7. Transfer the trays to the hydroponic unit. Germination of seeds begins at this point and is considered day 1.
8. Irrigate from day 1 to day 6 at intervals of 4 hours in every 24 hours (30 seconds for automated system and 1 minute for manual system).

Feeding hydroponic fodder to livestock
Cattle:Provide 8kg of the hydroponic barley to replace 2.5kg dairy meal in addition to hay and silage.

Some tips on Silage preparation

HOW TO PREPARE SILAGE FOR DAIRY COWS.

Silage is high-moisture fodder preserved through fermentation in the absence of air.
These are fodders that would deteriorate in quality if allowed to dry. Silage can be made from grasses, fodder sorghum, green oats, green maize or Napier grass. An ideal crop for silage making should;
i) contain an adequate level of fermentable sugars in the form of water-soluble carbohydrates
ii) have dry matter content in the fresh crop above 20%
iii) possess a physical structure that will allow it to compact readily in the silo after harvesting Crops not fulfilling these requirements may require pre-treatment such as:
i) field wilting, to reduce moisture
ii) fine chopping, generally 20–25 mm preferred to allow compaction
iii) use of additives, to increase soluble carbohydrates

Harvesting stages
Napier grass should be harvested at about 1 metre when protein content is about 10%. Maize and sorghum should be harvested at dough stage, that is when the grain is milky. The grains will provide water-soluble sugars and molasses is not
necessary when ensiling. When ensiling napier grass, molasses should be added to increase the sugar content. To improve silage quality, poultry waste and legumes like lucerne and desmodium may be mixed with the material being ensiled to
increase the level of crude protein.

Types of silos
A silo is an airtight place or receptacle for preserving green feed for future feeding on the farm. Silos can be either underground or above ground, the qualification being that the silo must allow compaction and be air tight. Five types are described here: tube, pit, above-ground, trench and tower.

Silage can be made in large plastic sacks or tubes. The plastic must have no holes to ensure no air enters. This is popularly referred to as tube silage. Silage can also be made in pits that are dug vertically into the ground and then filled and compacted with the silage material.

An above-ground silo is made on slightly slanted ground. The material is compacted and covered with a polythene sheet and a layer of soil is added at the top. When finished, it should be dome-shaped so that it does not allow water to settle at the top
but rather collect at the sides and drain away down the slope.

The trench silo is an adaptation of the pit silo, which has long
been in use. It is much cheaper to construct than a pit silo. Construction is done on sloping land. A trench is dug and then filled with silage material. This method is ideal for large-scale farms where the tractor is used. Drainage from rain is also controlled to avoid spoiling the silage.

Tower silos are cylindrical and made above-ground. They are 10 m or more in height and 3 m or more in diameter. Tower silos containing silage are usually unloaded from the top of the pile. An advantage of tower silos is that the silage tends to pack well due to its own weight, except for the top few feet.

Qualities of good silage
Well-prepared silage is bright or light yellow-green, has a smell similar to vinegar and has a firm texture. Bad silage tends to smell similar to rancid butter or ammonia.
Natural microorganisms turn the sugars in the plant material or any added as molasses into weak acids, which then act as a preservative. The result is a sweet- smelling, moist feed that cattle like to eat once they get used to it.

Storage and feeding
Tube silage should be stored under shade, for example in a store. Rodents like rats that could tear the tube need to be controlled. When feeding, open the tube and scoop a layer and remember to re-tie without trapping air inside. When feeding from the pit, scoop in layers and cover after removing the day’s ration, making sure the pit is air tight. Drainage from the top should be guided to avoid rainwater draining into the pit.

Losses
Nutrient losses may occur during silage making. In the field during cutting, losses due to respiration during wilting will be about 2% per day. If it rains, leaching may cause some loss.

Overheating due to poor sealing gives a brown product, which may smell like to***co and result in severe damage to nutrients e.g. proteins.

Effluent losses of 2–10% that occur from moisture seepage contain soluble and highly digestible nutrients; seepage should be avoided by wilting the herbage.

Silage additives
During silage preparation, different types of additives can be added to improve the quality. These include fermentation stimulants. Some crops may not contain the right type or the right number of lactic acid bacteria. Bacterial inoculants and
enzymes can hasten and improve fermentation by converting carbohydrates to lactic acid. Most inoculants contain Lactobacillus plantarum.

Fermentation inhibitors include acids such as propionic, formic and sulphuric. Inorganic acids are more effective but are strongly corrosive thus not recommended.
Of the organic acids, formic is more effective than propionic, lactic or acetic.

Substrate or nutrient sources (grains, molasses, urea or ammonia) are used when there are insufficient soluble carbohydrates in the material to be ensiled (e.g. legumes, Napier grass, crop residues). They are also used to increase the nutritive value of the silage. Molasses can be added at about 9 kg/t of silage.

Note: Use of additives is not a prerequisite for making good silage, but it is good for
problem crops.

SUGARCANE FARMERS PLEA

Cane farmers are calling for the reinstatement of the defunct Sugar Development Levy (SDL) to spur the growth of cane farming in the country.

The Kenya National Federation of Sugarcane national secretary-general, Mr Ezra Okoth, says the levy enabled farmers to buy farm inputs such as fertiliser cheaply. The farmers now attribute the current sugar shortage to lack of cane in the farms in Nyanza and western regions.

Kenya: Cereal Farmers Ask Ministry to Deliver Subsidised Fertiliser On Time

Cereal farmers in the North Rift region have called for prompt delivery of government subsidised fertiliser as preparations for the next planting season commence.

This is a shift from their demands for better producer prices.
The growers yesterday petitioned the Agriculture ministry to import the farming inputs early.

They said it should avoid the last-minute rush that results in some of them planting their crops without applying the nutrients.

"We want the government to introduce a coordinated system of importing and distributing the fertiliser to enable farmers to purchase the nutrients on time and ensure smooth planting," said Mr Wesley Kosgei from Moiben, Uasin Gishu County.

Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica, signed financing agreements with Kenya, together with Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The support provided will focus, amongst others, on supporting smallholder agriculture through access to finance, training or market integration.

Commissioner Mimica stated: "These projects, worth a total of €104 million, will have a real and tangible impact for Kenyan small holder farmers and for Kenyan people in general. In some of the dry parts of rural Kenya, farmers risk losing their crops or cattle during periods of drought. The Climate proofed water supply programme and the support to market integration of small holder farmers will help ease such problems."

The first project, worth € 20 million, aims to provide water and sanitation facilities to close to 400,000 people in arid and semi-arid lands of Kenya through the Climate proofed water supply programme. Local governments, some 40 villages and the private sector will work in partnership to construct and manage medium sized water supply and public sanitation facilities. The project will engage and benefit women and will ensure that organizational structures are in place to ensure the sustainability of the infrastructure.
