A simplified formula on how we got here (based on De Jouvenel's theory on power).
1) Man wanted "rule of law", so that he wouldn't be subjected to arbitrary tyranny, and so "the law" was declared sovereign above all other powers.
2) Under secularism, law-making fell under the domain of man, and so "rule of law" really became "rule of man" who made the law... Not the rule of one man though, because that would be arbitrary tyranny again, so "the law" was declared to come from "the will of the people", which was sovereign.
3) "The people" can't actually all express their wills at once though, and so they need "representatives"... The representatives now express "the will of the people" which is "the law" which is sovereign.
4) The "will of the people" is also always held above the will of particular interests, because particular interests are seen as "self-serving" and not aimed towards "the greater good"... But particular interests always exist, and people will always find ways to push for their particular interests... Special interest groups begin to strategize around lobbying "representatives" to write laws which are favourable to their particular interests.
5) Sooner or later though, special interest groups realize that they can actually 'get in on the ground floor', by backing political candidates and political campaigns before they even get elected. They can prop up their own "representatives" and get them into office, and can also prop up certain public sentiments before they become widely accepted by "the will of the people"... Eventually "the representatives" come to represent the most well-funded and well-organized special interest groups (corporate lobbies), and "the will of the people" begins to bend towards the most well-funded and well-propagated public sentiments (the power of the corporate media).
6) So now we have "representatives" who are completely beholden to corporate lobbies, and are elected to express "the will of the people" which is "the law" which is sovereign, but is also heavily influenced by corporate interests who greatly control the flow of media... Corporations greatly control "the representatives", "the will of the people", "the law", and sovereignty... So much for not being subjected to arbitrary tyranny... Ya'll played yourselves.
