UB Chariot Radio:
A near two decades expedition

The Chariot Radio, the campus radio of the University of Buea was created thanks to the pioneer HOD of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Professor Enoh Tanjong. He got a grant from Open society for West Africa (OSIWA), Canada of sixty million francs worth of equipment.

Following the grant, Prof. Enoh Tanjong requested successfully for the laboratory used by nursing students to host the new broadcast lab; The Chariot FM.

The then Head of Broadcast Unit, Dr. Henry Muluh together with Prof. Enoh Tanjong and Dr. Divine Besong were very instrumental in setting up the equipment at Chariot FM. Mr Omale was hired by Dr. Henry Muluh all the way from Douala to set up the equipment at Chariot FM. Mr Omale worked day and night to ensure that the radio is well set, after which training seminars were organized by the department.

This training session was intended to get the staff familiarized with the state of the art of the equipment. Prof. Tanjong together with the help of the then Vice Chancellor, Professor Cornelius Lambi set up the Chariot to tremendously improve on the training of journalism students. Chariot FM 93.5 went on air for the first time in the 2005/2006 academic year.

The first broadcast exercise conducted by student journalists was done during the launching ceremony of the multimedia laboratory on the campus of the University of Buea.

Mr. Joseph Fajong was appointed first Station Manager and was succeeded by Otto Enyame (PhD). Other station managers include Martin Elonge and today, Rene Isah.

With various challenges in over 17 years from maintenance and temporal shot down amongst others, the radio today counts numerous successes most eminent being it's former students journalist placed in strategic institutions over the nation. The 1st Edition of the Chariot Career Day is a moment to remember and celebrate the resilience and achievements through out this time.

Celebrated Journalist Inspires Journalism Students with Passion and Professionalism

Wednesday December 6 2023

University of Buea, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication

Renowned journalist Smart Njikang Gabriel affectionately referred to as Ambassador, returned to his alma mater on Wednesday December 6 2023, gracing the student radio station with an empowering speech that left a lasting impact on aspiring journalists.

The visit served as an opportunity for current students to glean invaluable insights from the successful journalist who has made a name for himself in the industry.

Ambassador, who once walked the same halls and frequented the very same student radio station, took the time to address the eager students, sharing wisdom gained through his extensive experience in the field. The speech revolved around five pivotal points, each urging students to embrace certain qualities that pave the way to professional success.

First and foremost, Smart Njikang passionately articulated the importance of being passionate about the craft of journalism. Emphasizing that journalism should be fueled by a genuine love for storytelling and a desire to make a difference, he encouraged students to find their inner fire and channel it into their work.

Specialization within the field of journalism was another crucial point highlighted by the ex student. He stressed the value of honing one's expertise in a particular niche, as it allows journalists to provide valuable insights and in-depth knowledge in specialized areas. By becoming subject matter experts, he asserted, journalists can carve out a unique space for themselves in a competitive industry.

The Equinoxe star man also underscored the importance of being distinguished in the field. He shared personal anecdotes about their own journey to success, emphasizing the need for constant self-improvement, pushing boundaries, and going the extra mile. By standing out, whether through exceptional storytelling, investigative prowess, or innovative approaches, young journalists can set themselves apart from the crowd.

Humility was another quality that the multi award journalist advocated for. Acknowledging the collaborative nature of journalism, he encouraged students to remain humble, open-minded, and receptive to feedback. By valuing the contributions of others and continuously learning from peers and mentors, aspiring journalists cultivate an environment of growth and improvement.

Lastly, Smart Njikang stressed the significance of determination. He reminded students that the path to success is rarely easy, but with unwavering determination, obstacles can be overcome. His powerful anecdotes showcased instances where perseverance led to breakthroughs in their career, inspiring students to pursue their passion with resilience and tenacity.

Throughout his speech, Ambassador imbued the room with a sense of enthusiasm and motivation. His journey from student to celebrated journalist resonated deeply with those in attendance, igniting a collective spark of ambition and aspiration.

As the speech concluded, students flocked around the ex student eager to ask questions, seek guidance, and build connections. His visit to the student radio station truly embodied the essence of paying it forward, as he graciously shared his time and expertise, nurturing the next wave of storytellers and truth-seekers.

In effect, Ambassador's visit to the student radio station at served as a stirring reminder to aspiring journalists of the qualities required to succeed in the field. Through a captivating speech focused on passion, specialization, distinction, humility, and determination, he left left an indelible impression, inspiring the students to embark on their own journeys towards becoming exceptional journalists.

The Chariot Radio, FM 93.5 Buea now has three new digital recorders.

This being gift from the 2010 batch of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication as they paid a working visit 10 years after.

Receiving the gift was the Head of Department of JMC, Dr Lizzie Wantchami who appreciated the gesture and immediately handed to the radio coordinator, Dr. Otto Enyame for immediate use.

Dr. Lizzie used the occasion to call on other batches produced by the prestigious department over the years to follow what she termed a good example.

Before it's on radio, it's on Chariot FM, the campus radio of the University of Buea.

We are grateful 🙏
