In 1968, over 250 Mexican American workers at Economy Furniture Company took a stand against unfair wages, earning just $1.75 an hour after years of service– this monument in East Austin at the Richard Moya Bus Plaza located at 363 Shady Lane honors these courageous workers that united their communities to ignite change.
This Saturday, Austin Vida is joining @preservationaustin on their Economy Furniture Strike Urban Hike. We’re also publishing an article that explores more of the significant sites behind this important labor action, so stay tuned for an in-depth look at the history and impact of this movement.

📌 Austin Vida is a Latina-led news and culture outlet that amplifies, informs, and celebrates the Latinidad of our local community with coverage that centers the voices of nuestra gente.
At Austin Vida, solutions journalism means not just reporting on issues but highlighting changemakers and actionable steps toward progress. Last summer, we partnered with @austinpbs to co-publish a piece on food insecurity, which was later broadcast nationally by the PBS Newshour!
On Jan. 25, our Austin Vida team rolled up our sleeves to pack and distribute food at the Impact Now Dove Springs pantry. Through our reporting and community efforts, Austin Vida strives to uplift our gente all across Austin. We had a great time building comunidad with each other while supporting our Dove Springs neighbors!

Our historias are a big part of what makes our community special. We’re all about amplifying our gente’s stories, and a big part of Austin Vida’s mission is to open up spaces so that more community members have opportunities to tell their OWN stories.
That’s why today we’re launching a community essay series called My Austin Vida. It’s an opportunity for our comunidad to share their Austin Latinidad experience through the lens of resilience.
We're dedicating the month of January to these diverse and moving essays that touch on everything from belonging to reconnecting with our roots. Four Austinites will share their unique Austin Latinidad experience.
All of us have a story. And these stories deserve to be told because you never know how it’s going to inspire someone else. The more we see stories of ourselves pushing forward, the more we know that sí se puede. You don’t have to be a professional writer to contribute. It also doesn’t have to be a written story – maybe it’s a photo essay, video, or something different.

Mil gracias to everyone who has already contributed to our end-of-year fundraiser. For those who may not know, Austin Vida has been selected to participate in a national campaign called NewsMatch. This means that from now until Dec. 31, every contribution will be TRIPLED—this is huge for a small, independent newsroom like us.
Through your support, we had lots of highlights this year including welcoming Associate Editor Isadora Day and Editorial Intern Andrés Calixto, who both brought so many fresh stories & perspectives to Austin Vida. We were also honored to be featured on PBS NewsHour this month, showcasing our reporting on Dove Springs in collaboration with Austin PBS' Decibel.
But we’re just getting started! In the new year, we’re excited to bring even more projects, stories, events, and experiences—including the launch of My Austin Vida, a community essay series. There’s so much more we have in store for our Austin gente.
Donate today to help carry Austin Vida into 2025! Gracias por todo, we couldn’t do it without you.
Abrazos,
Nancy Flores

🎉 We’re muy excited today to announce that Austin Vida was selected to receive funding from Press Forward, the nationwide movement strengthening communities through local news!
Austin Vida is among the newsrooms across the U.S. who were selected for a two-year grant to report on communities that have traditionally gone uncovered. A review panel of national foundation and journalism leaders saw how our reporting is making a difference in our comunidad and awarded us $100,000 in funding to keep going.
What does this mean? You can expect even more stories and programming amplifying our gente y mucho más! Here we go, familia! What would you like to see in Austin Vida?
Austin Vida presente en Los Angeles!
