Manchester City 4-1 Real Madrid: Nicolas Otamendi, Raheem Sterling, John Stones and Brahim Diaz strike for Pep Guardiola's side as they win in Los Angeles
If Pep Guardiola’s vision for Manchester City takes shape over the course of the next 10 months, he may look back on the night his team dismantled back-to-back European champions Real Madrid at the Los Angeles Coliseum as the moment it all started to fall into place.
It has come at a cost – £217million so far, to be precise. But if Guardiola can produce results, and performances, like this then his paymasters in Abu Dhabi will view it as money very well spent.
This is pre-season, of course. Early days. Changes were made by both sides and key players are still missing, not least Cristiano Ronaldo. But putting four goals past a team like Real at any time of year is no mean feat, and City did it here in some style in front of 89,000 – the biggest crowd for a football game ever at this iconic venue.
Barcelona 1-0 Manchester United: Neymar punishes Antonio Valencia error as Red Devils lose the final match of their American tour
One of the intriguing plots to this pre-season for Manchester United centres on their defence. More specifically, the centre of their defence.
Who will partner Eric Bailly at the heart of Jose Mourinho’s back four? The answer is not quite as clear cut as we might have imagined when Victor Lindelof was paraded in June, after United lost to Barcelona in this friendly.
He might have cost £31million but the Iceman could yet be left in the cold during the opening weeks of this campaign. Lindelof, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are effectively on trial.
Chelsea outcast Nemanja Matic trains with Eden Hazard after being left out of Asia tour while Pedro begins recovery from multiple fractures
Chelsea's wantaway midfielder Nemanja Matic was put through his paces at the club's Cobham training base after being left out of the pre-season tour of Asia.
Matic has been told his wish to move to Old Trafford and team up again with Jose Mourinho will be granted as a gesture of goodwill in view of his service to the club.
And with his heart seemingly set on reuniting with his former Blues boss, Antonio Conte decided against taking the Serbian midfielder to the Far East.
Manchester United target Ivan Perisic could leave Inter Milan if we find replacement, reveals Luciano Spalletti
Inter Milan manager Luciano Spalletti has conceded that Manchester United target Ivan Perisic could leave this summer — but only if he finds a realistic replacement.
United, who have already signed Romelu Lukaku for £75million and Victor Lindelof for £30.7m, have been heavily linked with a move for the 28-year-old.
However, a move appears to be hanging in the balance with Croatia winger Perisic currently involved in Inter's pre-season tour of China and Singapore.
Manchester United on red alert as Renato Sanches admits he is ready to leave Bayern Munich this summer
Renato Sanches has declared he is unhappy at Bayern Munich and wants to leave the German giants.
Sanches, who cost Bayern £27.5million when he made the move from Benfica last summer, only made six Bundesliga starts for the Bavarian club last season and admits he is itching for a move.
That news could go down well at Old Trafford, with Manchester United reportedly among the midfielder's admirers.
Arsenal to submit third offer of £50m for Monaco winger Thomas Lemar after £45m bid was rejected
Arsenal will submit a third offer for Monaco forward Thomas Lemar worth £50million.
Having signed Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon, the Gunners are focusing on getting a deal for the France international over the line.
Arsenal have already had two offers, their latest worth £45m, rebuffed by the Ligue 1 club. Monaco have insisted Lemar is not for sale, but that has not stopped the north London club from trying to land the 21-year-old.
Manchester City set to battle Real Madrid for Kylian Mbappe after opening talks with Monaco in hope of hijacking £160m deal for forward
The tug of war for Kylian Mbappe has intensified with Manchester City looking to hijack the Monaco star's world record move to Real Madrid.
City have opened talks with the 18-year-old French sensation and are pursuing a deal that would shatter the £89million deal that brought Paul Pogba to Manchester United last year.
Real have agreed a £160m six-year deal but City are refusing to give up the chase.
And speaking ahead of City's pre-season game against Madrid in Los Angeles in the early hours of Thursday, Pep Guardiola refused to rule out a move for Mbappe.
