New Mexico has three ICE immigration detention centers that have the capacity to detain up to 2000 people. The three facilities are the Cibola County Correctional Center, the Otero County Processing Center, and the Torrance County Detention Facility. These facilities have well-documented histories of unlivable conditions, interference with access to legal counsel, inadequate health care, and even deaths. ICE detention inhibits economic prosperity in rural economies, creating dependency, the stigma of a “prison town,” and other obstacles to diversifying its industries.

The Dignity Not Detention Coalition was formed to end immigration detention in New Mexico. We are using state legislation as a tool to get us one step closer to achieving abolition.
