25 years ago I was there, in the eye of the hurricane, when Napster took place. Napster and its descendants -BitTorrent, Emule, Kazaa, etc.- destroyed a whole system of enjoying music, video and content in general and helped create a new one. In Los Angeles, record companies were desperate trying to keep their books in black, artists were switching to other methods of distribution, and, the worst: Tech companies didn't realize that MP3s were compressed, low-quality echoes of digital sound. Steve Jobs sold 128 kbps MP3s in iTunes for $0.99. And somebody realized it was OK to pay artists and music composers fragments of pennies for streaming. Other forms of promotion and distribution were created, and a lot of record companies went the way of the dodo.

Napster eventually tried to go the legal way, but other big media companies already had plans with streaming and subscription plans. They also knew they could control their content better, as it never leaves their servers and don't go in boxes to stores. The digital format works for some of us, but others prefer the legacy media, the anachronic format of records, books, DVDs and even VHS tapes and they will tell you they're better. After realizing how hard and bad internet censoring is getting, I say I prefer to own my physical media.
