“During this time in life, droves of women leave the workforce or suffer silently through as many as eight hot flashes a day,” says Flow Advisor Daisy Robinton, PhD. “It is estimated that in the U.S., women lose $1.8Bn of working time per year. This is not to mention the strain on relationships and family, and more generally the lower quality of life many women experience.”

Robinton founded Oviva Therapeutics after discovering gaps in information, data, and resources for . Now, the founder is trying to make menopause optional. Learn more🔬here: https://bit.ly/3SRoQEg

Dr. Lisa Mosconi made a surprisingly revolutionary declaration in a 2019 TED Talks: “Brain health is women’s health.” 🧠

The neuroscientist and Director of the Weill Cornell Medicine Women’s Brain Initiative and Associate Director of the Clinic will publish ‘The Menopause Brain’ in early 2024, which makes a bold case for hormonal therapies — possibly even before symptoms arrive.

“The more women demand this information,” Dr. Mosconi says, “the sooner we’ll be able to break the taboos around menopause, and also come up with solutions that actually work.”

Learn about what Dr. Mosconi is focusing on next here: https://bit.ly/3G97paQ

Psychiatrist Dr. Judith Joseph MD knows that women’s symptoms are regularly dismissed or misdiagnosed. That’s why she encourages women — especially Black women and women of color who have less access to health care — to understand the relationship between mental health and menopause through her T.I.E.S. system, which highlights the mental health aspects of menopause: Thinking, Identity, Emotions, and Sleep.

The goal, says Dr. Joseph, is for women to be able to prioritize self-care and seek support from a provider when necessary. “Once someone turns a light on, they know what they’re dealing with and are more calm,” she says. “The human brain is afraid of the unknown.”

was approved by the FDA in 2017, but chances are you’ve never heard more about it than you did this year.
The drug has been linked with health improvements in recent studies that go far beyond the weight-loss buzz that made it a viral phenomena — including treating and preventing relapse for those struggling with addiction, delaying early-onset dementia and preventing Alzheimer’s disease, and reducing major cardiovascular issues.

During the pandemic, Alysia Reiner lived in Saltaire, on Fire Island, a small town with no cars, no hospital, no police, no doctor — just Volunteer Fire. The actor and activist had never dreamed of becoming a firefighter, but, much like Reiner recently told her teen daughter, things change.

"That community saved my life — physically, emotionally, and spiritually during the pandemic," the actor and activist recalled to Flow for our Innovation & Advocacy Issue. "I deeply wanted to give back." And so Alysia Reiner became a volunteer firefighter. Watch Reiner’s full interview with Flow here: https://bit.ly/40L26Yr 🔥

Sophia Bush’s quest for innovation has been a winding path, but she sees it all as part of a much bigger picture: “As far back as I can remember, there have been opportunities to support other people. And it's always felt like a must for me, not a maybe.”

That spirit led Bush from acting and activism to angel investing, with a focus on femtech companies like Aunt Flow and OYA Femtech Apparel. “If we want to see more women founders and more women in venture,” she asserted, “we need to be there ourselves.”

Dr. Mary Claire Haver, author of , created The Galveston Diet Mary Claire Haver, MD — a program that has helped thousands of women in around the U.S. protect and enhance their health. But she knows there’s much more work to do.

“We need to demand that our lawmakers, government research funding agencies, medical schools and residency programs prioritize the study and care of the menopausal women,” Dr. Haver told Flow. “We are different. We age differently, our diseases are different, our reactions to medications are different and we die differently.”

"There are so many avenues in women's health that really require innovation—and they require us to show up," Sophia Bush told us. "When we collectively, as a society, make noise and demand what we deserve, and demand better, you do see the arbiters of power begin to pay attention."

The actor, activist, investor, and podcast host shared with Flow how her activism has women’s health at its core. Watch the full interview at the link in bio as part of our Innovation & Advocacy Issue: https://bit.ly/47w7T6q

Chef Carla Hall’s life story is made up of pivots — and the former contestant and co-host is back in reinvention mode. At age 59, she’s continuing to develop Black and African diaspora recipes that innovate American cuisine and working to close health disparities in the Black community…all while working on a one-woman show based on her life. “Even though I may seem willy-nilly,” she tells Flow, “I'm all systems and efficiency.”

Hall’s style of innovation is rooted as much in the past as it is in the future. When she’s preparing a meal, she’s thinking about her ancestors, and her work as a “culinary historian” is a journey “to understand what the tradition is” — right before she reinvents it. Actress Gabrielle Union got a full blood panel 14 years ago without even knowing it measured her follicle stimulating hormone. “As they were going through all the results,” she recalled to Flow, “they were like, ’And just FYI, your FSH level is so high that you would be considered perimenopausal.’”

She was 37. Now 51, she’s still experiencing perimenopausal symptoms. That’s why she’s on an anti-inflammatory diet, practicing “radical transparency” — and committed to using her platform to talk about . (As well as leaving space for a good cry.)

Her main point for other women: Menopause is coming for all of us, and we’d better talk about it. “Because,” she stresses, “you’re not alone.” Hear more about Union’s perimenopausal journey, and what’s been working for her along the way here: https://bit.ly/3SBSsFJ

Hormone therapy is one of the most effective ways to treat symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and urinary issues. What’s more, it may also offer long-term health benefits, like protecting against bone loss and cardiovascular disease and decreasing your risk of Alzheimer’s. While there are risks to using any medication, the benefits of an improved quality of life and relief from debilitating symptoms often outweigh the risks for many women. Talk to your provider to make the choice that’s right for you. Learn more in our guide to menopause hormone therapy here: https://bit.ly/3FLQfzC
