BREAKING: MACHU PICCHU IS ON FIRE!
Erm, maybe not. It's just a misty timelapse from our early morning start at Peru's most touristy tourist destination. Actually, loads of people have said it's kind of touristy...but we didn't really care. This place is so vast and impressive, we didn't mind sharing it so much. Yeah, it gets a bit much by lunchtime, but if you're there early enough, you can get a view like this pretty much unhindered. 360º video coming soon!

How many colours can you count? Hiking to the very top of rainbow mountain sure was a challenge. Especially as the horses that people can usually hire, happened to be on strike, DOH! (well, the owners, not the actual horses).
The hike itself wouldn't be difficult if it wasn't for the altitude - starting at 4300m, reaching 5200m at the top.
But it made us challenge ourselves, and it was worth every granny step we took. .

How's this for a view from a hostel?!!! Jeez, hostels have changed. I remember when you had to put a deposit down for your bedclothes and pay extra for the company of bedbugs. This is the view from reception (yes, reception!!) at The Secret Garden, Quito, Ecuador, looking out to the old town amid wispy altitudey clouds cotton-woolling their way across a basin ganged up on by mountains. At 3000 or so metres, walking up the stairs at the hostel pulls your lungs inside out and turns your brainicles into a nonsense mash. Actually, I think it's happening right now....

We're in Ecuador! And for the last few days we've been just-a-hangin' at the foot of this ridiculous volcano. Cotopaxi looks massively like the mountain on the Paramount pictures logo at the start of films. It's not though. If you wanna get geeky about it, Cotopaxi is an active stratovolcano in the Andes (it coughs smoke, constantly), and this is the view we had of it from our little cabin at Secret Garden Cotopaxi hostel. For a fixed package price these guys drive you from Quito out to Cotopaxi, feed you three meals a day, include two awesome (altitudey) hikes and provide free banana bread all the live long day. Dang! Not to mention five delicious dogs that join you on the hikes with miraculous fitness and then help themselves to your lap in front of the fire later on.

Hi everyone, I know it's been a while since we posted images of where we are, what we're up to and where we've been. We have left the rich, bustling beauty of Colombia to experience the exotic wonders of Ecuador. But before we post anything about Ecuador, here are some images of stuff we got up to in Colombia. It's hard to show you just how mind-blowingly beautiful the natural areas are, how kind and friendly the people are, and how rich in culture this incredible country is...in just one post. Forget the Narcos...things have-a-changed. Hope our images give you a little taster of just how wonderful Colombia is. From the eccentrically colourful streets of Guatape, to the breathtaking views at the top of the absurd El Penon rock, to the busy winding, mountain valley streets of surpriisingly chilled Medellin and to the tranquil, other-worldly landscape of Tayrona National Park. in Colombia you will always find something to tantalize your senses.

360º VIDEO: Paradise in Panama - THE SAN BLAS ISLANDS
So, you could decide to fly between Panama and Colombia. It certainly ain't happening by road, because the Darien region is jungle thicker than grandad's nostril hair (and full of co***ne cookers). OR you could go by speedboat. Not just by speedboat, but speedboat via 365 idyllic islands. Those classic remote islands with a couple of palm trees sprouting out and nothing much else. Although, rather than a stranded man with a long beard and a friend called Wilson, you will see the Kuna people - indigenous folk who have autonomous control of the islands. We traveled with San Blas Adventures, a well run outfit who have access to the islands not just visit, but to stay on them too. It's the weirdest thing, waking up marooned on a perfect bit of sand hardly 20 metres long. It might be a pricier option for continuing your journey from Central to South America (or vice versa), but when you consider 4 days of accommodation and food included, and the fact you get to chill out on real desert islands...I'll take the speedboat every time!

"Where there is ruin, there is hope for a treasure" - Rumi

Facts about Tikal:
The city of Tikal was founded in 200 BC, and home for up to 90 000 Mayan people. For unknown reasons the city of Tikal was abandoned, in AD 900. And lay undiscovered until 1848, due to Mother Nature doing what she does best, claiming the land back. Earth, flora, and fauna completely engulfed the city leaving archaeologists with a mammoth task. To date only 15% of Tikal has been excavated - we can now, only image, what wanders await archaeologists and tourists alike - below the surface of the earth.

INSIDE BELIZE'S FIRST EARTHSHIP
This is the follow up story from our 360º video of the 'earthship'...
In deepest, darkest Belize - the southern state of Toledo, if you get a bus far enough, you may eventually bump into the Atkinson family. They're a band of Brits who've 'escaped to the wild' and set up a homestead next door to the enchanting Mayan ruins of Lubaantun. But more than just build a few cabanas and growing some bananas, they embarked on a truly staggering, monumental project. These lovely nutters have decided to build an 'earth ship'; a building made completely from rubbish. Tens of thousands of bottles let the light in, tires, plastics of every description are packed into the earthquake-friendly walls to make a structure that's like a big breathtaking wedding cake. If you didn't know, 'Earthships' are a thing. An architect called Michael Reynolds is to blame, and these beautiful fortresses of trash are cropping up all over the place. But the Atkinsons' is the only one in Belize to date. You can find them and their progress on Facebook as 'Chaos Oasis'.

So we went to visit/do a Workaway with the Atkinson Family (who featured on Channel 4's 'Escape to the Wild')...former Londoners who quit the smog for an off-grid adventure in the lush jungle of Belize's deep south. More than that (as if that isn't quite enough)...they decided to build an EARTHSHIP. Read: a building made, basically, from rubbish. Car tires, plastic and glass bottles...all of that stuff makes for this beautiful, absurd, eccentric growth amid the bananas, avocados and palms growing around it. But more than garbage, this thing is solar, captures and treats water and helps to grow food. We'll be posting a more detailed video on this bunch soon...but for now, have a little 360º tour around the bizarre 'Chaos Oasis'!

360º RUINS OF CHICHEN ITZA, MEXICO
Welcome to the Disneyworld of Mayan Ruins. Chichen Itza is the big ticket here in the Yucatan. Coach loads of people come here everyday, and the real challenge is getting here early enough to beat the masses. This comprehensive Mayan site has some of the most complete ruins around, but for our money, it's not the most pleasant to visit. It's WAY expensive compared to others like Palenque and just too busy. Of course, you may want to visit for its specific history, but if you're just ticking off the runs thing from your bucket list, we'd certainly recommend going further afield (like Palenque) to avoid the Cancun Daytrippers. In the middle video here, you'll hear a strange clapping sort of thing. People have worked out that if you clap at the bottom of the pyramid, it rebounds and sounds odd. One clap would do it, followed by a debate as to whether this was by Mayan design or not. But many stand there clapping and clapping...and clapping. Arghghg, get me to Palenque!!

Meet Elvis, a Garifuna Belizean who owns the inn we stayed at - with his New York wife - on the Caribbean coast. In the mornings, Elvis (who prefers to be called Ernie) likes to potter around on the ocean, singing to himself. His deep voice bounces eerily off the flat ocean, while grackles squabble in the palms and a rooster proclaims the day is ON.

Waking up an hour early to witness the sunrise is a waste of time - no one ever said. Especially Elvis. And Hopkins blessed us with this beauty just a couple of days ago.

Chichen Itza is an incredible ruin site in Mexico's Yucatan. But experiencing its beauty can be ruined by the hoards of people that come to see it everyday. Of course, you can't blame anyone for wanting to go there - it is spectacular and after all, we were merely visitors too.

The best advice we can give you, if it's on your list of must see Mexican Mayan ruins, is to get there the minute the gates open at 9am - so you beat the crowds...giving you the chance to breathe in the fresh air and feel the tranquility, beauty and history around you.

360º Island Magic Beach Resort, Caye Caulker, Belize.
Fancy bit of tropical paradise? Caye Caulker (Caye pronounced 'key') is a 45 minute speed boat trip from the chaotic nonsense of Belize City. Turquoise waters, pelicans, the lot. Perhaps Caye Caulker has been swamped by tourism over the last few years, and maybe it's getting a little out of hand...but it's still a relaxing island getaway. We stayed at Island Magic Beach Resort quite near to the Caye Caulker Water Taxi drop off point, and to avoid paying fortunes for food on the island, got a room with a little kitchen. Groceries still aren't that cheap, but the alternative for cheap eats is stuff like fry jacks - deep fried stuffed bread that will eventually make you quite obese. Caye Caulker is a great base for snorkeling and diving trips or just chilling at a beach bar and enjoying happy hour with the locals, whose catchphrase is 'go slow'. Lying on the beach isn't the best here...swimming is restricted by lots of seaweed, and the nightlife is suprisingly quiet (but it is there if you seek). We were on a sort of every-other-day-hangover regime. Want tips? [email protected] or comment below!

24/02/2017

Happy Friday everyone, sorry we dropped off the scene for a week or so. We've been in the heart of the Belize jungle, helping a family (The Atkinsons) build & decorate their 'earth ship'. They're living in an inspirational way! Totally off grid - any electricity is solar powered & almost all of the water they use is collected rain, meaning no hot water of course but who needs that when you're in a boiling country? Their bucket showers & bucket flush toilets also help preserve water. They grow a lot of fruit, veg & herbs & do a lot for their local school. These are all things that we believe we should all be doing to save this wonderful planet we live on. We'll post an image of the actual earth ship soon, which you will see is a mixture between a Mayan temple & a Gaudi master piece. But until then, look up a documentary made about the family around 2015 for Channel 4 in the UK called "Escape to the Wild' with Kevin McCloud. but don't believe everything the programme says - Belize isn't as dangerous as they portray! 😅

360º SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASA, CHIAPAS, MEXICO
It might not look TOO far on a map, when you consider a visit to this colonial gem in Chiapas. But the map keeps mountains a secret. If you're not a fan of winding roads and travel sickness...maybe think twice. Actually, don't think twice - man/woman up and get it done. Because even though San Cristobal is a ballache to get to, and even though it can get purdy darned cold at night and in the mornings, it's still worth a visit. There seem to be quite a lot of people who either really love it or just can't face the long bus journey out, because they seem to stick around. Of course, outside of the deliciously colonial streets punctuated by epic churches, the city itself is quite grubby. But stay camped in the centro and take advantage of the lazy cafes and bars, the great food and friendly street dogs, and you're laughing. We stayed at the super-chilled Rossco Backpackers Hostel, which is well situated for getting into the center, has really cute dogs EVERYWHERE and starts a bonfire each night to combat the chill. Most people do tours; it's all about the tours. We did the one out to the Sumidero Canyon, which was worth every penny, because it's stunning. Others do one out to the Montebello Lakes, but reported that it's a super long day and the lakes aren't actually as nice as they look from above in the pictures (all different colors).

20/02/2017

An update up on our last post about the giant pink lakes of Las Coloradas:

When I said that you can't swim there, I almost told a big fat lie. The good news is there IS actually a place, nearby, where you can indeed swim all you flipping like! Not the main pink lake, but another pink lake.

It's not tinted quite as pink as the previous location, but as you can see in the photos, it's still super stunning. With views that can only be described as other-worldly, and full of Flamingos, what could be better (or stranger)? Some parts of the lake even look like the Arctic, but actually, it's 25 degrees out there, and all that ice is just frothy salt! This water is still very salty, and although you can swim in it, it's not recommended you do so for too long, or you'll come out like a giant olive. The salt is great for the skin and the water is full of minerals, but being 20% saltier than the sea, it needs to be done in moderation, lest your hair turns into sauerkraut.

After enjoying my salty bath (which Spence opted out of, crazy fool) and floating around like an over excited goon (or, olive), we then had the opportunity to cover ourselves in the nearby natural clay (which, again, Spence opted out of?!). As funny as it makes you look, your skin will be thanking you for it. The clay is packed with natural minerals, and as it dries and hardens, it draws toxins from the skin, leaving you silky smooth and 10 years younger! Okay, maybe not 10 years younger, but the benefits are felt straight after washing it off in the nearby crystal clear (freezing cold) turquoise sea. This truly is a day not to miss out on, and Rio Lagartos Adventures ecotours sure know the best spots to take you.

18/02/2017

Have you ever seen a pink lake, or a girlie lake than this? Well, you can if you make your way to Las Coloradas, located on the northeast coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. The easiest way to see the lakes is to stay in a small near by fishing village called Rio Lagartos, and either drive yourself, take a tour or a taxi. This particular lake is a no swimming zone, partly because it's 40% saltier than the ocean, so a little harsh on the skin & partly because of the salt factory next door. The salt is exported all over the world and they're not too keen on people's smelly feet contaminating it 😉

Why is the water pink, you ask? Well, a dye is naturally emitted by the red plankton & tiny brine shrimp that inhabit the waters. It's the same reason why flamingos are pink, as they eat the plankton and brine which in turn colours them a bright pinky/orange. How cool is that!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
A special thanks to Rio Lagartos Adventures ecotours you guys rock!
