Brent Cross Town £7bn development improves workflows with new drone software

Brent Cross Town, a joint venture between Argent Related and Barnet Council, is using Site Scan drone flight management and image processing software from Esri UK to improve the efficiency of groundworks surveys and how it communicates progress of the new neighbourhood. The software is being used to create 3D point clouds, textured meshes, video and 360-degree panoramas, enabling highly accurate and consistent updates to be shared amongst all stakeholders as the development progresses.

Commercial drones and photogrammetry software are the biggest change to surveying since GPS.

Having the right tools for a job is important, although if you don’t have the right people using those tools it’s just as bad.

Quick tip of the day -3D Terrain Models:
1. Optimal height: Drones need to fly at an optimal altitude to achieve the best ground sample distance(GSD).
Your GSD directly impacts the accuracy of your surveys, so it’s essential to understand how it works.
In simpler terms, the GSD represents the size of one pixel on the ground. The higher the GSD the less accurate the final data will be.
As a rule of thumb, you will be able to get measurements of absolute location at an accuracy of one to three times your GSD.
2. 80% image overlap and sidelap: The computer needs enough information to stitch images together into an orthophoto—a 2D aerial image corrected for distortion.
Overlap: The amount by which one photograph includes the same area covered by another, customarily expressed as a percentage. The overlap between successive air photographs on a flight line is called forward overlap.
Sidelap: The overlap between photographs in adjacent parallel flight lines.
3. Angles: A wide variety of angles is required to create a digital terrain model, or a 3D look at the shape of your terrain surface.
4. Steady flight: Getting high-quality photos for drone photogrammetry requires a steady, consistent drone flight to capture clear images.
5. Combined, orthophotos and digital terrain models (also called DTMs) create the 3D models of your site.

You’ll quickly learn that 3D scans aren’t very useful if you can’t do 3D measurements, such as:

* Topographic contour profiles
* Surface distances
* Cross sectional profile
* Grades and slopes
* 3D volumetrics (stockpile measurement, drop cut estimations, etc.)

Aerial surveying (UAV) for 3-D surface modelling and detailed mapping.

The aim of this course is to provide field-based demonstrations of Aerial Surveying using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle to acquire ultra-high resolution imagery of the study area, which will later (in the lab) be used to generate various geographic information products such as orthophoto, point clouds, digital elevation models (DEMs), digital surface models (DSMs) and detailed mapping from high spatial-resolution orthomosaic image. In particular, the detailed mapping of various land surface entities can be mapped accurately on the produced high resolution image.

Drone technology also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is the future for cost-effective and rapid data acquisition. Furthermore, UAVs can be used in high-risk situations and inaccessible areas in real-time. UAVs have been found to be a low-cost, alternative digital photogrammetry as opposed to the Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technique. This has revolutionized 3-D topographic surveys in most geological engineering and science works.
