Hilton Hotels Set To Provide Accommodation To Travellers In Every African Country

There’s nothing better than staying in a hotel provided by a well-known and respected brand. Therefore, the news that Hilton Hotels is set to open up at least one branch of its trusted chain in every country in Africa is very much welcome. Hilton already have 40 hotels open in the continent and have pledged to spend $50 million over the next five years as part of the Africa Growth Initiative.

Africa is a traveler’s hotspot and at the end of a day of exploring, being able to kick back and relax with some online shopping via the hotel’s in-house WI-FI is joyous. But other than great facilities and a friendly face, how will multiple new hotels impact the country’s travelers?

TRAVEL TODAY
The first African Hilton hotel – the Nile Hilton – was launched in 1959 and was closely followed by the Hilton Nairobi. Since then an additional 38 hotels some which includes Transcorp Hilton Abuja and Hilton Yaounde, have been catering for African’s travelers.

However, this growth hasn’t been substantial enough. At present, African travelers are significantly affected by a shortage of quality hotel rooms. The senior vice president of development at EMEA at the Hilton Group states “There is also a shortage of quality hotels in the continent, and as the middle class grows, we are seeing higher demand for the quality hotels.” This is alarming as it’s likely to be putting individuals off from exploring all that Africa has to offer, thus impacting the economy.

THE ECONOMY
Anyone who’s planning on traveling will pack their bags with plenty of new belongings, such as clothes, toiletries and electronic items to keep them entertained during their trip. The Digital Statistics in South Africa 2017 report reveals that 31% of the African population purchased goods via ecommerce websites between 2016 and 2017, many of which would have done so for their planned getaway. With Tejas Shah, the director of acquisitions and development for Hyatt stating that “at least four out of every 10 travelers in Africa are from within the region,” it’s essential that every effort is made to create high quality hotels which people want to stay in, otherwise, they may turn their attention to visiting other locations altogether.

WHAT TRAVELERS CAN EXPECT
Aside being one of the top 5 star hotel in Nigeria and several other large countries in Africa. The Hilton brand aim to double their portfolio and open hotels in countries including Ghana, Tunisia, Botswana, Zambia, Swaziland, Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda, over the course of the next five years. As many as 20,000 new rooms will be created across the new hotels, meaning travelers can rest assured that no matter where in the country they travel, they’ll be a comfortable and familiar room waiting for them.

According to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics the number of students enrolling in post-secondary education in Africa is on the rise. Each year, thousands of these students embark on a traveling adventure around the continent. When it comes to making your way around the continent, you’ll need to get your hands on a decent set of wheels so that you can make the most of your journey and truly experience all that Africa has to offer. Financing your new vehicle will be easy thanks to Hilton promising to create hundreds of new jobs which will be up for grabs no matter which country you opt to travel to.

Finding a quality place to stay when you’re traveling around Africa is set to become easier over the coming years due to Hilton’s pledge to expand their empire into every African country. Not only will this boost the economy, but it will make traveling in the continent a much more desirable prospect.

China made 10% of tourists visiting Africa in 2016

The massive influx of Chinese tourists to Africa has in the recent years made a buzz, and it is for all possible reasons. After seven consecutive years of annual double-digit growth in spending, China continues to lead global outbound travel, reaching US$ 261 billion of Chinese travelers’ expenditure in 2016, a 12% growth since 2012. Approximately 135 million Chinese outbound tourists travelled in 2016, out of which 10% were bound for Africa up from 3% in 2008.

As at the end of Q1/2016, China’s economy stood at an approximate $11.3 trillion, the second largest in the world just after the US with about $17trillion. However, while the US remains on top of the chart, the case is expected to be different by 2027 in terms of tourism spending and investment as well as in total travel & tourism GDP; as China overtakes the world giant.

In Africa, various data has shown that Chinese tourists spend an average of 40% in excess of their European and American counterparts. Increasing Chinese investments in the continent (China’s total trade with Africa peaked at $222 billion by December 2014), involvement with African government's projects such as the construction of the recently launched Standard Gauge Railway in Kenya; remain among major factors that influence China’s appetite for Africa.

This, not to mention a highly tech savvy and adventurous generation of Chinese millennials with a comparatively high purchasing power. “Chinese millennial travelers are fueling the growth of global tourism as they seek new and fresh experiences,” states a report by Carat & Jing Travel on what’s influencing Chinese millennials. Other factors include ease of travel following the introduction of direct flights between China and several African countries such as South Africa, Ethiopia, and Kenya; which according the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) saw a whopping 100,000 Chinese visitors in 2016. Less stringent visa restrictions for Chinese travelers to countries such as Morocco and Tunisia is also a big plus.

If the endlessly breathtaking destinations, wild safaris, comfortable weather to escape the massive heat waves in China are all anything to go by, then Africa can only expect stronger projections from this Asian country with a vast capital base. For instance, by having China as one of its outbound destinations, Africa’s leading online travel agency Jumia Travel is capitalizing on the trend by creating a link between China and the African market. “This helps us leverage on the diversity of operating on both the African and Chinese markets,” says Estelle Verdier, Jumia Travel COO. It is therefore up to the concerned stakeholders in the hospitality and tourism industries in Africa to gain momentum in meeting what seems to be an increasingly demanding Chinese tourism source market.

How To Keep Your Valuables In A Hotel Room

Leaving your valuables in a hotel room can be very disconcerting. Whether you have placed it in a safe as most hotels would suggest or you have put it safely in your luggage, you can never be too sure. How safe is the safe really?

How trustworthy is the staff? Is the security as tight as acclaimed? An option would be to always keep your valuables with you, but then that might not be convenient as there is the chance of you getting mugged or you misplacing the valuable, especially if you are visiting a new city.

The solution would, therefore, involve a situation where you are in charge of security and in that regard, Jumia Travel, Africa’s no. 1 online hotel booking service, has put together pointers on how to keep your valuables while lodged in a hotel.

The safe is never safe. Digital or manual, never succumb to the temptation of the hotel’s safe or locked storage area. Doing that would imply relying on the accommodation staff. A number of things could happen, the locked safe could be broken into or stolen entirely or the safe could get jammed and your valuable would be trapped. Again, never use a safe that requires a key provided by the hotel, as there may be untold numbers of key copies circulating among staff and former guests.

Lock your suitcase. Always lock your suitcase either with numbers combination or with a key lock and ensure the key is with you at all times. Yes, there is a slim chance that someone could steal the entire suitcase, but that is extreme.

Use the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign. If you care more about your valuables than about your room being cleaned, simply leave the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door and if possibly, leave the TV on when you are leaving for the day.

This will discourage people from entering your room when you are not there as they would think you are occupied inside. If you must invite room service, do so when you are available to monitor their activities.

Find hiding spots. There are so many places in your room where you can hide valuables from prying hands. You can hide money and important documents under the carpet corners, taped to the bottom-side of drawers, within a small bag and pin between double drapes, you could even go as far as unscrewing ventilator grates and hiding valuables inside.

Basically, the idea is to choose areas of the room that are either not cleaned regularly or are so obscure people won’t think to search them. Also, avoid putting all of your valuables in the same place. If you split them around the room, you are much less likely to lose everything if someone happens to find one of your hiding places.

Set the stage. Keep the room and your items very tidy so that any disorder would be conspicuous. This is not to say that you should now leave any valuable items out in the open. Also, while you are rearranging the room, you don’t want to damage or disturb things or areas in your room as you may end up paying to fix what you broke, thereby losing some or even all of the money you were trying to save.

Created in 1996, and as such considered one of the youngest states in Nigeria, Ebonyi state certainly cannot be counted first among the most popular states in the southeast region of Nigeria. The hotel offers 24hrs power supply, internet access, and a bar and restaurant onsite. Also, security is a big deal as there are cameras around the compound and guards at almost every corner.

Variety of local cuisines

Ebonyi state is the perfect destination for budget travelers who are foodies as there are a number of local cuisines that would appeal to travelers taste buds. Again, travelers can absolutely eat so much with so little as these meals are very affordable. Most restaurants, especially the local bukkas around the city, even the ones in hotels have main meals for as low as NGN500 on their menu.

Nigeria Nets Over $1.1billion from Tourism in One Year

The Nigeria tourism sector generated over $1.1 billion in 2015, the Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation, NTDC, Mrs Sally Mbanefo revealed on Tuesday, November 29.

Mbanefo disclosed this during a two-day Nigeria Tourism Investors Forum and Exhibition. The forum being organised by the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) in collaboration with NTDC and the National Institute for Hospitality and NIHOTOUR in Abuja is tagged; “Tourism: Tool for Economic and Development.’’

She said the tourism sector generated the revenue from the related expenditure incurred from the more than 6.01 million tourists that visited the country in 2015.

The NTDC DG stated that the balance of $853 million was generated from 4.8 million tourists that visited in 2014.

”In 2014, about 4.8 million people arrived and the related expenditure was $853 million. While in 2016, about 6.01 million came into Nigeria and we generated over $1.1 billion as the expenditure related to their arrival in this country.

“This is an economic indication of the value that tourism can have in any economy where the government and the private sector give value to it.’’

The DG said that Nollywood had created job opportunities for more than two million persons, 30,000 work in restaurants and over 11,000 in the hotel business.

She, however, listed some of the challenges affecting the sector to include access to gathering statistics, epileptic power supply, inadequate infrastructure, poor access to visa, as well as absence of uniformed standardisation and classification for hotels nationwide.

She therefore stressed the need for investors to tap into the abundant opportunities that abound in the sector, adding that it had also created job opportunities and unified the diverse cultures in the country.

Top 5 Places That Tell The Igbo Story.

The Igbos, one of the main ethnic groups in Nigeria, is known to have a rich culture and a remarkable history. While modernization has ensured the erosion of certain aspects of their culture, much of its history has been preserved, including relics from the past which reveal its heritage.

Jumia Travel, Africa’s No.1 Online Hotel Booking Portal, lists 5 places where the culture and history of these people who dominate the eastern part of Nigeria can be discovered.

lgbo-Ukwu Museum

The Igbo-Ukwu museum is in Ngo village, Igbo-Ukwu, Amabara state. The town, Igbo-Ukwu is of great historical and cultural significance in Igbo land as it is notable for bronze artefacts from a very sophisticated bronze metal-working culture centuries before other known bronzes of the region.

It is in recognition of this that the Federal Government in Nigeria granted approval for the hosting of an annual National New Yam Festival in Igbo- Ukwu to promote the culture and tradition of Ndigbo and new yam festival.

The festival takes place at National Yam House built by the Federal Government in Igbo- Ukwu since 2005. The Igbo-Ukwu bronze treasures were accidentally discovered by a worker who was hired to dig a cistern by Mr. Isaiah Anozie during dry season in 1939 .

Subsequent archaeological excavations of the area led by Professor Thurstan Shaw led to the discovery of other sites , making a total of three sites: Igbo Is aiah (a shrine), Igbo Richard (a burial chamber), and Igbo Jonah (a cache).

Among the recovered object, there was a ritual Pottery Vessel, Scabbard, Pendant with rams head, Human face with scarification, Bronze bowl and a pear – shaped bowl. While some of these artefact have been exported and some lost, the Museum plays a significant role in preserving the remaining Igbo ukwu pieces, indigenous productions, which are vital in discerning the ancient history of not only Igbos, but of the human existence within ancient Africa.

lgbo-Ukwu Museum has remained an attraction to tourists mostly because of its bronze artefacts. It is a great place to visit as the bronze pieces are a sight to behold.

The Long JuJu Shrine of Arochukwu

Arochukwu is the third largest town in Abia State (after Aba and Umuahia) in southeastern Nigeria and is a famous tourist destination as the cave of the famous long juju oracle is a particular attraction.

It is originally, a religious centre with a well-laid down administrative structure headed by a Chief Priest.

The cave is believed to hold the long metal pipe through which the gods speak to the people, and was used to judge the perpetrators of crimes in the old time.

A dark kilometre-long series of tunnels, some deeply mysterious features of the shrine include the Throne of Judgement, where Chukwu would decide on the fate of a person, the Tunnel of Disappearance, and the Red River, which would turn coloured when a person was killed.

What makes this shrine, also known as Ibinu Ukpabi, a spectacular historical site in the region is the role it played in the slave trade era and thus the impact it made in Nigeria’s history.

In the 15th Century, when the slave trade was introduced, West African middlemen used it to their advantage, as the condemned were no longer killed inside the shrine, but secretly sold on into slavery. The mystic Long-Juju shrine, the slave routes and other relics of the slave trade era have become important tourist attractions in the area as a result of what they represent in Nigeria’s history.

Mbari Cultural Centres

Mbari is a traditional arts and crafts center retained by the Imo State council for Arts and Culture. Situated at Ikenegbu in Central Owerri, Mbari, it is an open air museum that houses monumental arts depicting the culture, tradition and history of the Igbo people. Sometimes referred to as the ‘house of gods’, it is a huge tourist attraction.

Although Mbari is a monumental art sacrifice to “ALA” the earth goodness, it also shelters artistic representations – artefacts as well as sculptures- which tell of the prevalent social life of the Igbos and images of other prominent deities that inhabit the traditional Igbo cosmic system.

These deities include Amadioha (the god of thunder), Ogwugwu (the god of the forest), Nwaorie (the goddess of Nwaorie River), Ahiajoku (the god of harvest), etc. Closely attached to each deity are images of animals such as monkeys, tortoise, rams, snakes and owls, believed to represent errand spirits or mystical messengers of the deities.

There are also images of Ikoro, the Igbo traditional instrument for communicating messages; unfamiliar creatures such as the ostrich (Enyi Nnunu); a certain tall figure representing Alakuko, allegedly the tallest man in Igboland; ‘Onye afo toro’, a man whose stomach became bloated because he committed an abomination against Ala, etc

Contrary to general assumption, Mbari is neither a centre for idol worship nor an idol in itself. It is an art form that has its origin very deep in Igbo cultural and religious beliefs and practices.

The Mabari cultural centre is a three dimensional cultural facility, made up of the Mbari House, Mbari Museum Kitchen and an amphitheatre, and definitely a must-see location.

National War Museum Amafor Isingwu Umuahia

National War Museum Amafor Isingwu Umuahia is a museum set up to exhibit relics used during Nigeria’s Civil war of 1967. The museum has the largest collection of the Nigerian civil war weapons that are no longer in use.

The weapons are from both the Nigerian military and the defunct Biafra. Commissioned in 1985, the museum is located at Ebite Amafor in Isingwu Autonomous Community in the Umuahia North Local Government Area.

The museum’s location was chosen because it was where the bunker housing the famous shortwave radio “the Voice of Biafra” was transmitted from. It has three galleries featuring items on the traditional warfare, armed forces and Nigerian civil war weapons.

War relics in the museum include weapons used during the pre-colonial civil disturbances, warfare materials used during communal and inter-tribal wars and those of the Nigerian civil war.The Museum Complex opens at 10am and closes at 6pm daily with a gate fee of N100.

For those who did not experience the civil war, they may not get a mental picture of how it occurred without visiting the museum, for those who did, they could relive the period by visiting the museum.

It is a perfect way to gain firsthand knowledge of the civil war, a huge part of Nigeria’s history. It is certainly a place to go.

Mungo Park House

Mungo Park House, also known as National Museum Asaba, is tucked behind the Delta State High Court and the state Library Board complex along Nnebisi Road, Asaba, Delta state Nigeria.

Although named after Mungo Park, the man who discovered River Niger, the prominent colonial vestige of pre-fabricated wooden storey building was never owned or visited by Mungo Park.

The house was constructed by the Royal Niger Company (RNC) in 1886 and served as the first British administrative headquarters in the country and invariably the first government house in Nigeria.

The Mungo Park House offers education on Nigeria’s rich historical background (mainly that of trade and investment in pre-colonial era) and journey to civilization.

Although some parts of the building are slowly dilapidating due to the elements (weather corrosion), it is definitely a place to visit. The museum is also just a few blocks from the popular Grand Hotel, Asaba.
