PREGNANT FOR A GHOST
Episode 3

The next day, Amaka headed to the native doctor's shrine where she narrated what had happened to him. "Good day, the great god of Serpent. My world is crumbling around me and I don't know what to do. I felt sick and visited the hospital, where the doctor told me that I was few weeks pregnant. I haven't slept with any man, except the ghost, and I'm wondering if it's even possible for a ghost to impregnate the living" Amaka said, with worries written all over her.

"Nothing good comes easy, my dear. The dead man you slept with had one desire at the moment he was about to die, which is having a child of his own. It was obvious that he hasn't been able to get his wife pregnant, and seeing you, he invoked a child in your womb. It's not possible that you had gotten pregnant by making love to him. The pregnancy was invoked in your womb, and you have no option than to carry it for him," the native doctor boldly declared.

"Is there no way that I could get rid of this pregnancy? Please, help me. I don't know how to explain to people that I was impregnated by a ghost," Amaka pleaded.

"I'm afraid I can't do anything about this. This is an issue you have to settle with him. It's now a battle between you and a dead man. You have gotten the power to make huge sales, and the dead man has gotten his greatest desire. Go! for this problem is beyond my solving," the native doctor told Amaka, who sadly left the shrine.

Amaka was determined as she desperately sought a way to rid herself of the pregnancy. She quickly visited a nearby hospital in hopes of aborting it, but after a thorough examination, the doctor there informed her that it was not possible to terminate the pregnancy. Amaka tried multiple hospitals to seek a solution, only to be met with the same disappointing verdict each time – it was impossible to remove the pregnancy. Exhausted and disheartened, she tiredly made her way back home, weighed down by the burden of her predicament.

It was in the dead of night when Amaka felt a gentle pat on her back, startling her awake. She scanned the room but found no one there. As she settled back into bed, the ghost touch came again, and this time she saw the ghostly figure of the same man she had slept with . Fear gripped her, and she quickly thought of running out of the house at that late hour.

"Stop right there!" the ghost's voice rang out, freezing her. "I have a warning for you. Do not dare to rid yourself of this pregnancy, for the consequences will be heavy. I will expose your evil deeds and how you go about, taking others' destiny for your own selfish gain. If you disobey me, you will suffer a slow and painful death ." After giving the frightening warning , the ghost disappeared, leaving the fearful Amaka.

In the following days, Amaka's growing belly drew curious looks from those who knew her as a reserved individual. Speculation and gossip surrounded her pregnancy, as people wondered who was responsible for her sudden pregnancy.

Even in the market, the presence of the ghost hanged all over her, watching as she attended to her customers. It was a constant reminder of the warning she had received.

Her business was growing rapidly as almost all the people in the market flocked to her shop to buy food, but her regret was just the pregnancy.

One evening, Amaka received a phone call from the native doctor who instructed her to come to the shrine, promising a solution to her problems .
Though she was afraid that the ghost might be keeping watch on her, she headed to the shrine.

At the shrine of the native doctor, he spoke to Amaka, saying, "If you wish to eliminate this pregnancy and the ghost haunting you, there is a price. You must find a young man to sleep with. I will give you a special soap to bath with, then you must meet the young man.
Once that is done, you're to bath again with the soap and return it to me. The connection between you and the ghost will be broken, but the man you are with will lose his destiny. His future will be hopeless, and his efforts will not bear fruit." Amaka viewed this task as simple, given the many men who had shown interest in her recently.

Kenny, please I would like you to return home as soon as possible to see how things are going, because the king, his family, and cabinet members will be in visiting our town on Friday to see my family. Ada Said.

"Wow... this is fantastic news; I will go there tomorrow. Kenny replied.

"But please, Kenny, do not tell my parents or anyone else that you saw me and Prince Obinna, because I want to surprise everyone.

“Trust me sister, I won't tell anyone. Kenny replied.

"Kenny, let me know when you are leaving tomorrow so that I can give you some money. The Prince said.

“Eric? Ada asked.

"I am sorry, Sir. I came here to confess and ask for your forgiveness. Eric muttered.

"What happened, Eric?" Ada's mum asked curiously.

“I... I.. Ki.. Ki. Eric stammered.

“Eric what's going on? Talk to us na.

“Okay I will talk now, the truth is that when I heard that Ada was pregnant for the ma'd man, I was extremely h'urt, d'pressed and d'sappointed, so I decided to go to meet a very powerful goddess to k'll Ada with the pregnancy, and ever since I k'lled her, her spirit has been disturbing me badly, please ma, please Sir, forgive me. Eric cried out

"Ada's mother gripped Eric's cloth and his shirts.

"Abeg, let the young man be; your use'less daughter reaps what she sows; I regret the day you gave birth to that m'serable girl named Ada. Her stu'bbornness and stu'pidity have finally led her to an early grave. And may her m!serable soul rest in peace. Ada's father said.

"Just as Ada's mother was dragging Eric, The King, his family, cabinet members, and security officers arrived.

"The king and his cabinet members stepped out of the car.

"Is that not the famous king of the Ameke Kingdom? Ada's father asked.

“He's the one o. Eric replied.

"Ahhh... What is the great king of the Ameke kingdom doing in our home? Ada's mother mumbled.

"Greetings, Your Majesty. Long live the great King of the Ameke Kingdom. Ada's mum and Dad greeted.

“Thank you. I know you are all surprised to see me in your home today.

"Definitely, your majesty.

Let us go inside. The king said, and as they entered, he said:
"Well, I came to thank you and your wife for raising such a wonderful and magnificent child." She is the reason my family and I are still alive today.

"Please, your Majesty, we are lost; who are you talking about? Ada's mum asked

“Your daughter. The king replied.

"Your Majesty, our daughter is no longer alive, so we do not have another daughter. Ada's father responded.

"Where are the Prince and the Princess?" The King asked.

“Let me call them your majesty.

"When Obinna and Ada finally got out of the car, Eric and Ada's parents screamed.

“Gho'st!! Gh'ost!! She is a gho'st, your majesty.

"My sister had never died. Kenny said.
"She is a ghost, and I was the one who ki'lled her. Eric replied.

“K'll her how? Obinna asked.

“Well, when I heard that Ada was pregnant for a p**r ma'd man she was ma'dly in love with, I was extremely hurt, d'pressed and fr'ustrated, so I decided to go to meet a very powerful goddess to k'll Ada with the pregnancy, and ever since I k'lled her, her spirit has been haunting me badly. Eric confessed.

“Godforbid not my spirit. So Eric you were truly the one who sent Eze-nwanyi(Queen mother) to come and K'll me. Anyway she didn't succeed because my great grand parents are from her Kingdom, so she doesn't K'll any soul who is related to her kingdom. Ada replied.

“Oh!! God, thank you for putting all of my e'nemies to shame. So, my daughter, where have you been? And why are you dressed like a princess? Ada's mother asked.

"She is a Princess of the Ameke Kingdom. Kenny responded.

“Haawwuu? Ada's parents and Eric asked coincidentally.

"Ada explained everything to them. And they were completely stunned.

"So that Ma'dman was a prince of the Ameke Kingdom? Chai, life is truly a mystery. Ada's father muttered.

“Thereafter, Ada's parents and Eric sadly apologized to Ada and Obinna, and they sincerely forgave them.

“After that the king said;
"Onowu, I learned so much today, Anyone can be a destiny's helper and savior in this life.

“I agree with your Majesty. Who would have imagined that the great king of the Ameke kingdom and his family would be saved by a soul from this kind of a family? Onowu stated confusingly.

"Onowu, It is true that life is mysterious.

“Ada's parents were eventually moved to the Ameke Kingdom by the king, who also gave them two large plots of land and established successful businesses for them.

"A few days later, the king and queen opened a large Plaza for Ada after realizing she was obsessed with business.

“3 days before Obinna's coronation, Obinna invited Eric over to the palace to reconcile him and Ada, and Eric eventually became Obinna's friend.

"A day after Obinna's coronation, Eric told Obinna that he was madly in love with a certain Princess who had attended his coronation, but he could not approach her due to her influence, status, and charisma.

"There were many princesses at my coronation; which one are you referring to? Obinna asked.

“My prince I do not know her name or kingdom, but she is of average height and dressed in purple royal attire. Eric said.

"Is she fair and slim?" Obinna asked.

“Yes my Prince.

“Does she have dimples?
“Oh yes my Prince.

"She is Princess Lizzy, and I know her."

"My prince, you are correct; her name is Lizzy. I just remembered her name" Eric said.

"Do not worry, Eric. I will speak with her on your behalf. Obinna said.

"Oh my goodness, my prince. Are you serious? Eric asked curiously.

“Pretty serious, I will introduce you to her and her mum as my best friend and I am pretty sure that she will not turn down your request. Obinna said.

“Thank you very much my Prince. I would be grateful if you could persuade her to accept me.

"That is not a big deal, Eric; just leave her for me. I will leave no stone unturned until she accept you. Obinna said.

"Oh, my prince. I am grateful.

"Eric, please stand up; I hope you know we are friends."
"I am just too grateful and happy, my prince.

“It's okay, Eric do you know that if you marry her, chances are excellent that you will become a king in her kingdom? Obinna asked.

“How my prince? What about her dad?

"Her father died three months ago, and she is her parents' only child; therefore, whoever marries her will become King of that kingdom. Obinna said.

The next day
"Prince Obinna summoned Princess Lizzy to his palace, and when she arrived, Obinna spoke with her about Eric, but she insisted on seeing Eric first, and when Princess Lizzy saw Eric, Obinna and Eric were both shocked by what she said.

The Gateman Episode 5

The Last Fight

(Dead Body Go Surplus)

Everyone in the compound gathered to find out what was causing so much ‘kata kata.’ Chima had fired two warning shorts in the air to scare The Gateman into submission, but it happened that the man refused to be scared. He was adamant and even absentminded as he stood holding his two hands on his door frames.

It was early in the morning, so no one had gone out. Chima hardly slept the previous night after seeing the video of his daughter naked in a room with The Gateman. It was truly traumatising for him as he almost ran mad.

Bekee, Ngozika and Adaugo all heard the gunshots that interrupted their early morning sleep, so they scurried out of their rooms to take a look. They saw Chima pointing a gun to The Gateman’s head. It was a moment of horror to see the man they were all sleeping with to be at the point of death in the hands of Chima.

All three ladies wondered if their dirty secrets with The Gateman had been exposed, but they dared not ask questions as someone was holding a gun and anything bad could happen to anyone at that deadly point because gun does not recognise kit or kin. It was safer to observe things first and to also plead.

But the ladies were surprised that The Gateman was not begging for his life. His face was nonchalant and even showed someone who did not care whatever happened next. He turned his face away from Chima as if to say “You are just joking, Oga.”

“You slept with my daughter and sent me the video. Have you gone completely mad? Are you insane?” Chima was shouting at the top of his husky voice and there was fire and pain mixed in his tone. But The Gateman still showed no signs of remorse and it was as if everything Chima said fell on deaf ears.

Bekee and Ngozika were shocked to hear that The Gateman had also slept with Adaugo. They felt so ashamed of themselves after realising they shared The Gateman’s bed with their step daughter. That was the truest definition of ‘akwuna akwuna’ and the clearest meaning of 'ashawo.'

Adaugo on her part wept bitterly when she heard what brought about the problem. She regretted everything, so she knelt before Chima to beg him to let The Gateman go. She wept bitterly, holding her father’s legs like a toddler but he could not be appeased as he still pointed the gun at the man’s head. Meanwhile, he released another gunshot into the air.

“Oga Chima, stop wasting the bullet. Stop this stupid gra gra and be a man for once. You have never been a man, but today be a complete man and shoot me. Stop this your childish initial gra gra.” The Gateman said and he instantly shocked Bekee, Ngozika and Adaugo with how much audacity and fearlessness he was exhibiting. You slept with a man’s daughter and then sent him the nudes, but you refused to beg or show remose even at gunpoint.

“Or is there something I don’t know? But if a bird is dancing in the road, the thing that is drumming for him is in the bush.” Bekee said to herself.

“You should be begging for your life.” The three ladies said almost at the same time. Chima released a shot, yet again into the air.

“Everyone be quiet.” Chima shouted. His voice roared like the gunshot he just released and the ladies recoiled into their shells like snails.

“Oga Chima, you cannot order me to keep quiet. It’s time for me to talk. This whole thing is ending today. The truth will come out today.” The Gateman said. Everyone noticed how Chima behaved like a toothless bulldog who could only bark but rarely bites. He wanted to act, but it was as if something was dragging him back. A man is always careful while trying to kill a fly that perched on his sc***um.

“It is time for me to open up. You can beat a child but you cannot stop him from crying” The Gateman said again as he used his left hand to push the gun away from his head. Chima did not resist as The Gateman stepped out in the open compound and sat on his brown wooden bench like a man who wants to address his household.

“This whole thing will end today. The secret of many years will come out.” Said The Gateman. He had effectively taken charge of the situation and was now in control. Though Chima still had his gun in his hand, he had been disarmed mentally by The Gateman who showed no atom of fear as he had expected.

Bekee and Ngozika became very scared when The Gateman started speaking of opening up secrets. They both cast knowing glances at each other as if to say “We are dead today.”

“I have kept this for a long time, but I will open up today since it has become as if I’m the devil in this compound.” Said The Gateman. His voice was firm and resolute like someone who has rehearsed his script very well. Chima knew where The Gateman was going, but he did not stop him from talking, so he remained calm and collected.

“Eighteen years ago, Chima hired me to get his late wife, Adanna pregnant.” The Gateman started. His voice was like bomb that just exploded and released shrapnels into Agaugo, Bekee and Ngozika’s ears.

“I’m sure you are aware that he is impotent. He did not want people to know about this so he hired me to help make babies for him. I was to be paid N5 million per child. It was his agreement with his late wife, Adanna who also knew he is impotent. Unfortunately, I was able to give Chima only one child before Adanna died.” The Gateman continued.”

Bekee and Ngozika cast knowing glances at each other. And ofcourse, Adaugo heard clearly what The Gateman said, so she already realised she had been sleeping with her own father. She ran off into her room and locked the door tightly.

“So you decided to sleep with the same daughter you gave me? You pervert!” Chima asked The Gateman, pointing the gun at him again. This time, he might shoot him because his heart was pounding faster than usual.

“Oga Chima, I slept with your daughter, sorry my daughter as revenge. To hurt you because you refused to pay me the agreed amount till date. Instead, you kept me as your gateman and refused to allow me to go for fear of your secret coming out. You ruined my life. Look at me. I’m thirty-eight with no wife, no family. You refused to pay me my N5 million. All I get is empty promises. For eighteen years!” The Gateman cried as he spoke. His tears touched Bekee and Ngozika.

“And for your information, I have also slept with Bekee and Ngozika and got them pregnant. I know you know their pregnancies are not yours. But what you don’t know is how I used touch and follow to lure them to my bed.” Said The Gateman. He started laughing in a mocking way as he looked in the direction where Bekee and Ngozika stood. They two ladies were shocked beyond words because they thought they were the ones who manipulated The Gateman, but here he was saying it is the other way round, and that he used charms on them.

Chima could not take it anymore. It was hard being ridiculed with impotence in the presence of his wives by a fellow man who is eating his wives like puf puf. He had to do something to show his wives that he is a man, so he pulled the trigger and the bullet hit The Gateman’s left leg. He groaned in pain as blood gushed like tap water.

“Let me finish before you kill me.” The Gateman said. He was not actually pleading as he was still laughing out loud. The laughter was to mock Chima, but it was mixed with pain induced by the gunshot wound.

“I’m also HIV positive. I have infected Bekee, Ngozika and Adaugo with it and I'm sure you have it now.” Said the adamant Gateman. Those were his last words as Chima pulled the trigger again and the bullet pierced his heart and he gave up the ghost.

Bekee and Ngozika saw what happened, so they ran towards the compound gate in a bid to disappear. But it became too late when Chima turned and shot them dead.

“Dead body go surplus. No ears will hear that I’m impotent. The shame is too much.” Chima said as he ran upstairs to check on Adaugo. If there was anyone he cared for, it was Adaugo. He loved her passionately and always secretly wished she was his real daughter.

When he got upstairs, her room was tightly locked, so he kicked it open with his leg.

What greeted Chima was Adaugo’s dead body. There was an empty bottle of ‘ota pia pia’ in her left hand and in the right hand, there was a su***de note.

“I’m sorry everyone. The shame was too much for me to take. I hope I will find peace with God. To my dad, Chima, I thank you for ruining my life. I regret knowing you as a father. To The Gateman, who I later realised is my real father, I thank you for making me feel loved, even if it was inappropriate for us to sleep with each other.” The note read.

Chima cried with a loud voice after reading Adaugo’s su***de note. It was as if the tears coming out from his eyes were mixed with blood. He pointed his gun on his head and shot himself. Chima’s dead body lay on that of Adaugo.

And that was how a whole family was wiped out in a day because of a man who wanted to cover up his shortcomings and have children through inappropriate means.

The Unbearable Burden, Episode One

“My husband is not around, so I have the opportunity to go to the party with you. I have never been to a night club and I desperately want to experience it. I want to know what it feels like not to sleep at home but to sleep at a night club, dancing drinking and having fun with my best friends. I have pleaded with my husband countless times to take me to a night club but he has refused. Why can’t I experience what other ladies are enjoying? I have been a good girl since my childhood, obeying every directive and instructions from my parents. I never disobeyed them. I even got married as a pure girl, which means I have been clean from day one. So, I guess, I little fun tonight will not destroy me. My husband has traveled to Lagos and I’m the only one at home. Please Lucia, on your way to the club, stop by my house and pick me up.” Purity said to her friend Lucia who was at the other end of the phone. She was at the balcony of her husband’s one story building. As she was on the phone, she could see people moving around the streets. She had come out to rest and receive fresh air when Lucia called to invite her to a birthday birth holding 12am at a nightclub.

Indeed, purity had been a very good girl. She was brought up in a Christian home with so many restrictions. She obeyed every one of them and kept herself completely pure until she married her husband, Chima. She had lived a beautiful life, never getting into a fight or trouble while in school and she never dated any man. Her husband was the first man she knew in every sense, including in the bedroom. Every parent in her community used her as a point of reference and example for their own children.

“Can’t see Purity? She is always obedient to her parents. Copy her and behave like her.” They would say to their own children back then.

But today, Purity is grown and married. At the age of twenty six and having stayed out of all forms of troubles until marriage, Purity thinks it was the time to unleash some of the pent up desires she has had as a child. Indeed, there were many things she never experienced because she stayed away from every negative influence.

“But now, I’m married and under the protection of my husband. There is nothing else to be afraid of. After all, my parents used to tell me that when I get married, I would be able to have all the fun I desire. I have kept myself until marriage; I think I deserve to have good fun as a reward. Nothing will stop me from going to this party. Thanks goodness my husband is not around. Let me go and prepare and wait for my friends.” Purity said as she rushed into her room and opened the wardrobe. She checked for the best dress but found nothing that would match the party at hand. She called her friend Lucia to get some ideas on what to wear. She told Lucia that all the clothes she has were big and that they would cover all parts of her privacy the way she liked.

“No! That is not the type of dress you wear to a party. You need to look hot and attractive.” Lucia said.

“What do you mean by hot and attractive? Who am I going there to impress or attract? I’m already married and I’m not interested in attracting suitors. I just want to go to the party and have all the fun I have missed as a young girl. Please, recommend a good dress for me and stop beating about the bush.” Purity tells Lucia over the phone. She sat down on her matrimonial bed.

“Don’t worry. I will bring a special dress for you when I’m coming. I promise you will like it. Just relax your nerves.” Lucia said over the phone.

Soon, it was 6pm and Lucia drove into the compound to pick Purity up for the party. She came so early so that she and Purity would have the time to test the clothe she brought and also to help her with makeup and other party accessories. Purity had never been to a club, so she would need a lot of timely preparations.

“Is this dress not too skimpy and revealing? Don’t you think it is inappropriate for a married woman to wear something like this in public? This doesn’t feel right. My privacy is showing and I don’t think I can wear this to even outside the gate to buy soft drink. Please, let me wear a normal dress.” Purity said to her friend.

“No now! Are you not tired of behaving normal? You have been a normal girl since you were a child. Do something crazy for once. Stop being a normal girl. Life is short and you have to enjoy the little time you have here on earth. Look, Purity, I want you to look good at this party. Come on, it is your first time of stepping out in the open. Don’t worry, after today, you will keep going because you will have so much fun.” Lucia said. She managed to convince Purity to wear the dress. She looked like a video v***n with her makeup and all the accessories she wore. In her mind, she imagined what her husband would say if he saw her the way she was dressed.

Soon, the clocked chimed 11:30pm and they drove off to the party at the night club. Indeed, it was a beautiful sight when Purity saw the environment. The lights and the music blasting through the air gave her a different kind of feeling. There and then, she decided that going to night clubs for parties would be a regular thing for her.

“I love this place.” Purity said as she collected a cup of wine from Lucia. She sat down close to a man who also had a cup of wine in his hand.

A few minutes after she took a sip from the glass of wine, she started feeling dizzy. Purity did not know when she dozed off. The next morning, she woke up in her house but she could not explain how she got there.

“What happened to me?” Purity asked as she started checking her body. She touched most parts of her body but she felt no pain. The last thing she remembered was holding a cup of wine in her hand and talking to a man seated beside her at the club.

“Who brought me home?” Purity asked herself. She picked up her phone and called her friend Lucia.

“You were drunk, so I decided to bring you home.” Lucia said.

Purity felt unusual and ashamed. Her head was hazy as if she hadn’t slept for days. She removed her dress and discovered that her un**es were missing. She discovered that a man touched her without her permission in the night.

“My goodness! How did this happen?” Purity asked as she felt the male liquid fertilizer in her body. She was so scared because she was in her most fertile period.

“I hope I won’t get pregnant. How can I explain that I got pregnant after being touched by someone I don’t even know?” Purity asked herself as she broke down in tears.

Towards the end of the month, her monthly visitor failed to show up. She bought a pregnancy test strip and dipped it in her urine. It showed positive. She is pregnant and the worse is that her husband is not the father of the child.

“My God! What took me to a night club? Now, I’m carrying the child of someone who touched me when I was drunk. Someone I cannot even trace. What am I going to do?” Purity asked as she continued to cry. The next day, her husband returned from Lagos.
