Spring is here, along with your first chance at Reclaimed Baggage by Katie O'Rourke Author, the follow-up to next week's release, Unclaimed Baggage. This at LibraryThing is for this month only! Trust us, you'll want to keep reading about this complicated but lovable family.
🌻
Reclaimed Baggage picks up years later, and we get the story of Barbara, the difficult matriarch.
🌻
Here's the official description:
Barbara is a widow, a recent retiree, and a liar. She tells lies like she drinks hot coffee—easily and often. Yes, this macaroni salad is homemade. Yes, I love your new dress. Yes, my children have the same father. The way Barbara sees it, lying can help smooth out life’s bumpiest roads. She would know; she’s been walking them as long as she can remember.

Now, her three kids are independent and grown, and Barbara’s helpful lies are catching up with her. She blames everything but herself: bad luck, stubborn children who no longer listen to their mother, questionable advances like DNA testing. And when her oldest daughter, Jenna, announces her plans to carry a baby for another couple, Barbara feels compelled to intervene. She doesn’t want Jenna leaving a trail of regret—she knows a little something about that.

Enter Stewart, a recovered alcoholic who doesn’t lie about anything. At first, Barbara closes herself off to the idea of romance, but Stewart is persistent and patient. Barbara begins to wonder if maybe she’s capable of change, after all this time. To keep her family together, she might have to try.

What do movies, visual art, and writing have in common for the author of THE VIGIL, Peter Dellolio? Read his short essay at The Write Launch about how he creates a visceral and cinematic experience through his writing:

https://thewritelaunch.com/2025/03/cinema-painting-literature/

Much of my writing, in fiction and poetry, has been deeply influenced by the imagery of painting and cinema. I have always been very much attracted to the ways in which language can create visualizations of things, people, and events.

"Was there anything from your own life that you put into the characters in your novel?

I don’t think so. Both Hank and Tyler are military veterans and I’m not. I don’t believe any of the four main characters are based on anyone I know now or from the past. For each of the four characters, I first established their names, and from the names I got a starting point for building them into people. I worked, too, off their occupations: Hank as a diner owner and cook, Lois as a veteran server, Clara as a young server still living at home, and Tyler, a jittery veteran just home from Afghanistan.

So, when I started putting flesh on each one, I began with knowing their name and job and my imagination assembled them, and then with each new chapter, I learned more about them and how they would react. For me, writing is a daily process of discovery like it is for readers. I don’t do character arcs before I start writing. I want the daily surprise that comes day as I know the characters better and hear their voice and understand their desires and conflicts."

We love reviewers! Thank you, Brooklyn!

⭐NEW REVIEW⭐

A truly captivating fantasy novel... From the first page, I was completely drawn into the world of Valenia, a kingdom facing not only hardship but the insidious creep of dark magic. Princess Kiar is a heroine for the ages – strong, resourceful, and deeply compassionate. She’s not a flawless character, which makes her journey all the more compelling. Her struggle to balance her inner strength with the responsibility of protecting her kingdom resonates deeply.

The narrative is rich with evocative imagery, particularly the description of the unsettling bog and its mysterious inhabitants. Creith masterfully blends traditional fantasy tropes with unique and intriguing elements, like the swanfolk and the unsettling bog-walkers, creating a world that feels both familiar and refreshingly new. The tension builds steadily, from the ominous warnings to the terrifying attacks, keeping the reader on the edge of their seat. Every encounter with the seemingly invincible foes is gripping, and the way in which Kiar grapples with their fear factor had me completely invested.

The supporting characters are equally well-developed. Willow, Kiar’s loyal swanfolk friend, offers a glimpse into a different culture while providing unwavering support. Tuan’s steadfast devotion is both comforting and inspiring, and even the character arc of a former enemy turned ally is handled with nuance and skill. The relationships between these characters add depth and emotional weight to the story.

The Lost King isn't just an action-packed adventure; it’s also a story about family, duty, and the sacrifices required to protect those you love. Kiar's desperate fight to save her father and kingdom is filled with moments of genuine heart and courage that left me truly moved...

This book is a must-read for fans of fantasy, especially those who appreciate strong female leads, intricate world-building, and thrilling action sequences... I highly recommend The Lost King. It's a fantastic read from start to finish." ~ Brooklyn

What a wonderful evening for a book launch! The room was full for author Tracy Wise, Author and Freelance Writer, who talked about her writing inspirations, read from Madame Sorel's Lodger, and answered many, many questions from the amazing audience! Thanks to Friends of A.K. Smiley Public Library for hosting and to The Frugal Frigate Bookstore for bringing (and selling out) of books.
