I WON PROMAX UK LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2014 !!!
Dearest Promax UK and fellow Promaxians
I hope this message finds you well. What a lovely bunch of peeps you are!
I had just sat down, sat back and taken my shoes off to cheer on the winners at the Promax UK awards when, Tim Hughes (Discovery Networks) bounced up on stage to announce the Promax UK Lifetime Achievement award...
Suddenly, Chris de Burgh's tune 'Lady in Red' started playing and Tim was calling my name ! I just couldn't believe it !
From all of our wonderful young people in the community and TV broadcast volunteers, I'd like to say a massive thank you for my Promax UK Lifetime Achievement Award !
I have always been passionate about my community and young people and have been volunteering for over 20 years before setting up So You Wanna Be In TV? in September 2009, to address the lack of diversity in TV and youth unemployment.
When my son was shot and stabbed while in school, his life began to break down. In February 2009, when he later told me that one of his attackers had said that he stabbed him because he hated him for having two parents at home, my life began to unravel. My son stopped going to school and became angry and withdrawn. In that same month I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. My family completely fell apart.
BUT my faith kicked in. I forgave my son's attacker. I didn't want revenge. I had two options. To sink or swim. I chose to SWIM !
With nothing behind me I refinanced my house, borrowed family money and reached out to the community to ask if there was anything I could do.
Young people wanted help to gain training and employment. I thought it would be best to use my skill base in TV to address youth unemployment. I also knew that the TV industry wanted to become more diverse and approached them for sponsorship to do just that.
I met Marc Ortmans - a loverly fella, three years ago and who kindly introduced me to you! Marc's belief in what I was doing in the community and TV has been unwavering. I could not ask for a better friend and supporter, who has stuck by me through thick and thin.
We could not have come this far without your help, dedication, care for our young people, sponsorship, fabulous hugs and smiles ! Big hugs to Landy Slattery and Anna Priest for being fantastic co-chairs !
Three years into our partnership with Promax UK, sponsorship of our young candidates at PUK networking events, Nominations party nights, and the Conference - has been terrific! Candidates have gone into work experience, training and employment including, the BBC, ITV, ITN, Sky, CBS News and Hat Trick Productions.
Thank you for being champions of diversity but most of all thank you for being our friends !
Biggest hugs and loves !
