There’s a problem at the Victoria Road city bound bus stop just down from Darling Street where peak hour commuters, including Newington school students, are crammed into a small space creating a dangerous situation. NSW Member for Balmain, Jamie Parker, told us he’s managed to get the Newington bus pick-up moved to Darling Street, Balmain, thereby easing the Victoria Road safety situation.
Leichhardt Council are asking ratepayers if they would be agreeable to a rates rise as the council needs more money to maintain infrastructure. Kath Hacking, from The Friends of White Bay residents group, said she is wondering if the council actually needs this money to make up for the shortfall caused by allowing half-hour free parking.
On the same subject, Ian Scandrett, founder of the Balmain & Rozelle Chamber of Commerce said council should first look in its own backyard to see what it can do to reign in expenses before coming to us with their hand out.
Leichhardt councillor Melinda Manikas made a triumphant return to the council after having taken an extended leave of absence to go to Germany for cancer treatments. Liberal councillor John Jobbling said she’s in remission and reported a welcoming round of applause from fellow councillors and council staff.
A report for the State government says the Glebe Island Bridge should be torn down. Jamie Parker, State Member for Balmain, said it’s important the corridor should be open for cyclists and pedestrians. He agreed with Leichhardt Council that the report is “biased and incomplete” and “cherrypicked outdated data”.
Balmain Water Polo Club had its first round of games for the new season and Anne-Marie Miranda reported the most number of teams they’ve had in many years including lots of Juniors. So seasons off to a good start.
Commenting on concerns that investors, especially Chinese, are coming into the Sydney property market and driving prices up, Matt Hayson, from Cobden & Hayson said not much Chinese money was coming into our market. He said they tend to go for the modern type of homes and there’s not many of those around the peninsular.
