Robbers killed after allegedly threatening to kill young couple’s baby

All that was running through a young father’s head before he shot three intruders was the fear of his wife and baby being tortured, r***d and killed, he told Middelburg Observer.

One of the intruders stood by his baby daughter’s crib. The mother repeatedly pleaded with the intruders not to hurt the baby. Her pleas were ignored by the three Mozambican intruders, who instead tackled the father with a knife.

One of the intruders allegedly told the father: “I’ll kill your baby.”

While the father was being attacked, he moved closer towards his loaded ACP C**t, which was under his pillow. With one arm, he defended himself against the knife-wielding intruder, and shot at the intruders. Two died on the scene, and one was wounded.

The wounded intruder fled to a neighbour’s house, who tackled him with a shovel. He is currently in a critical condition in a hospital in Pretoria.

The intruders accessed the house by bending and breaking the family’s burglar bars, and had already carried a television set outside, before they were shot.

The family has chosen to remain anonymous.

Holidaymaker falls into gorge at Victoria Falls

A Harare man on holiday with his family fell into a gorge at the Victoria Falls on New Year’s Day.

A rescue team by 5pm had not located him.

Zimbabwe national parks (Zimparks) spokesperson Tinashe said that the tourist fell into the gorge around 2.30pm.

“There was an incident this afternoon when a 40-year-old man fell into the gorge around 2.30pm. We are on the ground searching for him,” said Farawo.

The incident happened at a time when the Victoria Falls is experiencing heavy water supply from the Zambezi River owing to the recent local and regional rains.

The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) this week said an estimated 513 cubic metres per second were flowing into the Victoria Falls as of December 23 2020. This is a steady rise from 302 cubic metres per second from the same time in 2019.

In April 2020 when the river flow in the Zimbabwe and Victoria Falls was low, Elmon Muleya, 29, from Victoria Falls town cheated death after he fell in a gorge into the Zambezi River before a boulder landed on him crushing both legs.

In 2005 a tourist from Johannesburg died on New Year's Eve when he fell 40m down a rock face at the Victoria Falls while trying to recover spectacles he had dropped.

Minister Gwede Mantashe under fire for hosting wedding for his Son after Ramaphosa banned gatherings

There is never a good time to get married, an event that is notoriously stressful and logistically complicated.

A union during a pandemic is even more difficult to manage.

Reports have emerged that Mineral Resources and Energy Minister, Gwede Mantashe hosted a two-day wedding for his son Buyambo on the morning that President Cyril Ramaphosa moved the country from lockdown Level 1 to Level 3.

The second day of the proceedings would have taken place one day after Ramaphosa’s announcement.

As part of the adjusted lockdown strategy, gatherings were once again restricted until at least 15 January.

Alcohol sales were also scrapped temporarily.

National police spokesperson, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo explained that a wedding had taken place on the morning that Ramaphosa was due to make his risk-adjusted lockdown announcement, which was on 28 December 2020.

He said Mantashe was not aware that changes would be made, and because the wedding was stretched over two days, on 28 and 29 December 2020, stragglers were still gathered in the area where the celebrations took place.

Naidoo confirmed that Mantashe personally went to the Cala police station at around 8 am the day after Ramaphosa’s Level 3 announcement.

“He said listen, I have people at my place, but they’re going to be leaving, and if anyone says anything, this is what happened.”

Naidoo said police do not believe the minister broke any rules, saying it was more of a “circumstantial” situation than a deliberate law-breaking exercise.

“It’s not like he waited for the announcement to invite people. The wedding already happened on the previous day.”

Although some have accused Mantashe of flouting the strict rules laid out by the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC), Naidoo said the incident was more a case of bad timing.

Mantashe and his wife Nolwandle tested positive for Covid-19 in July last year.

Mantashe was admitted to the hospital, and his wife was able to self-quarantine at home.

Weddings, funerals, and religious gatherings have long been deemed ‘super spreader’ events, and limiting the number of people was essential to keep as many beds open for Covid-19 patients.

In July, at least 25 people who attended a wedding in KwaZulu-Natal tested positive for Covid-19, many of which occupied much-needed hospital beds.

Heartbreaking video: SA man with COVID-19 ‘dies’ days after warning people

With the number of coronavirus cases reaching one million in South Africa, a lot of people seem to ignore the fact that the pandemic is real and it kills. An emotional video of a Covid-19 positive man in hospital warning people to observe the regulations has broken many hearts and it is alleged that the man has died.

The video of a man who died after battling with COVID-19 has left many South Africans emotional.

In the video, the man is seen struggling to breathe as he was on oxygen.

However, what was more touching for people is the fact that he tried giving out warnings on how to be safe, despite being in a sick state.

The video has gone viral on social media, as it’s bagged over 21k views, and the caption on it reveals that the young man has passed on.

“He recorded himself on Friday and he died on Saturday,” reads the caption.

Liquor traders implore government not to impose total booze ban

Liquor traders have appealed for limited alcohol restrictions, should they be imposed, as Covid-19 cases surge.

SA liquor traders appealed to the government on Sunday not to impose a total ban on alcohol sales in response to an exponential rise in Covid-19 infections.

Fresh restrictions could be imposed after the National Coronavirus Command Council meets to discuss the Covid-19 resurgence.

The Liquor Traders Formations called on government, in a statement on Sunday, to work with the alcohol industry to “find solutions of mutual benefit on how to fight the Covid-19 pandemic in a manner that can safeguard the one million livelihoods that are dependent on the alcohol industry.

“We do not think that a total ban on alcohol sales will be a solution either in the short or long term in arresting the resurgence and uptick in the number of positive cases for Covid-19.”

Pleas for the president: Don't shut us down, say alcohol, tourism industries

'We cannot afford to lose jobs again,' the industries say before President Cyril Ramaphosa's address on Monday night.

They put forward two options for consideration:

A measured curfew to restrict unnecessary movement of people whilst balancing the interests of the tourism sector which was dependent on the availability of alcohol

Alcohol restrictions if any, should provide for off-premises sales to allow for consumption at home and provide a special dispensation for taverns to operate as off-premises outlets with restricted hours.

'People are behaving as if Covid-19 does not exist': revellers raise red flags

The Eastern Cape Liquor Board has sounded the alarm over liquor outlets and patrons openly flouting health protocols as Covid-19 infections surge in ...

“We continue to call on our liquor traders and the public at large to observe the Covid-19 regulations as it relates to the wearing of face masks at all times, sanitising and washing our hands regularly, and observing social distancing.”

“We understand the situation that the country finds itself in, and are alive to the fact that the president and his government have tough decisions to make in the coming days and as citizens of the country we will support government initiatives to tackle Covid-19,” read the statement.

“It is however our belief that any decision that affects our industry should be discussed with us beforehand and our inputs considered before any decision is communicated to the general public.”

Cancel the R10bn SAA bailout to pay for vaccines: John Steenhuisen

DA leader John Steenhuisen says the government should find the money for a Covid vaccine and help businesses affected by the lockdown.

The acquisition and provision of one of the four available coronavirus vaccines must replace lockdown if SA is to survive Covid-19, says DA leader John Steenhuisen.

“We understand that the resurgence in Covid-19 cases is dire for our country, but we knew at the beginning of this crisis that we would be grappling with the virus for 18 to 24 months. We now need to stock our arsenal with a finite solution to address this pandemic decisively and sustainably,” he said.

Steenhuisen said President Cyril Ramaphosa initially said that SA would receive the coronavirus vaccine in the first quarter of 2021. However, he said, this goalpost has now been shifted to the second quarter.

“There needs to be a simultaneous plan to massively improve public health care and get urgent access to a vaccine to begin a comprehensive rollout.

“The vaccination rollout is continuing apace across the EU and UK. In countries such as Chile, Costa Rica, and Mexico, where the socio-economic circumstances are not dissimilar to our own, vaccines are already being rolled out nationwide at great pace.

“The SA government has no excuse for its negligence in this regard and owes South Africans an explanation.”

SA has now missed two payment deadlines for the first batch of the World Health Organisation’s vaccination programme, delaying the arrival of the vaccine to SA's shores, said the DA leader.

“A vaccine is now the only solution, and the only alternative to lockdown which is no longer a viable or sustainable means to curb the spread of the virus in our country.”

Steenhuisen said the government needed more in its arsenal than lockdowns and bans.

“The economy has suffered devastating losses after almost a year of crippling lockdown restrictions.

“It is also unconscionable that the government would seek to simply shut down certain industries without simultaneously announcing a single cent of relief programmes to bridge the economic devastation that this will wreak on the hospitality and restaurant industries,” Steenhuisen said.

“Cancel the SAA bailout and put that money towards expediting vaccine procurement and rollout and bolstering financial relief to affected industries. This would show true commitment to saving lives and livelihoods,” he added.

DA MP Ashor Sarupen said on Tuesday the party had written to finance minister Tito Mboweni, imploring him to scrap the R10bn bailout allocated to SAA in the second adjustment budget passed by parliament in early December, and to divert this funding to procuring Covid-19 vaccines instead.

He said the DA has also written to the chairperson of parliament’s appropriations committee — the committee that approves the budget — to hold urgent virtual public hearings on whether South Africans want the bailout that has been allocated to SAA to be reallocated to mass vaccination against the virus.

Ramaphosa to call meeting over tougher Lockdown rules

President Cyril Ramaphosa will call a meeting of the National Coronavirus Command Council in the coming week to discuss the possible implementation of stricter COVID-19 lockdown measures.

This is according to a report from The Sunday Times, which said the president will recall ministers and top officials who are part of the council from their festive breaks.

“I can confidently say that the meeting will be on Tuesday,” a government insider told the publication.

The revised regulations could include more curbs on the number of people allowed to gather at indoor and outdoor events, tighter limits on the movement of people, the closure of borders, and further restrictions on the sale of alcohol.

This development comes as Health Minister Zweli Mkhize this week warned that the government will need to review the current lockdown restrictions as COVID-19 infections have spiked.

“We must warn South Africans that we will need to review the current restrictions and consider further measures to ensure that we curb this alarming rate of spread,” he said.

“It will be important for us to evaluate the situation, identify hotspots in these areas and make recommendations based on these findings and the outcomes of what has been implemented in the hotspots that have been identified so far,” Mkhize explained.

Elim Nurse life was cut shot by a drunk taxi driver

A professional nurse Susan Mulaudzi stationed at Elim hospital lost her life a day after Christmas while on her way to work, when her car was hit by a taxi.

It is alleged that a 26-year-old taxi driver, together with other four occupants were from Asawa tavern at Ha-Masakona village where they spent the entire night drinking alcohol.

The Limpopo health MEC Phophi Ramathuba said people came back from Gauteng and instead of spending time with their families at home, they went on a drinking spree the entire night and now they have taken a life of a valuable person.

She further said that they will make sure justice is served on this case. “People must be arrested, not only did they undermine curfew regulations but their arrogance and stubbornness has robbed us a life of a life saver,” said angry MEC after visiting staff at Elim hospital to provide them with counselling and support.

Mulaudzi leaves behind her two children and her husband who is a Radiographer at Elim hospital.

MEC Ramathuba sent messages of condolences to her family, friends and colleagues on this unacceptable loss.

Health department suspends Covid-19 screening at Beitbridge border after over 15 died

The Health Department has suspended Covid-19 screening at the Beitbridge border post to allow traffic to flow.

It comes after the deaths of at least 15 people waiting to cross into Zimbabwe.

The department says it has to ensure the safety of all South Africans.

Health department spokesperson Popo Maja said, in the interest of addressing the congestion, the department suspended temperature screening and health questionnaires from 23 December because “the same is performed on the Zimbabwe immigration side”.

Firstly, it has been reported that the antigen testing requirement, which the department introduced through amended health directions, is slowing down processes at the border.

However, what shocked most people is that the accident occurred right in front of Kelly’s billboard planted by the roadside.

Zondo says there’s no place to hide for Zuma

Former president Jacob Zuma will have to account for his alleged role in state capture whether he likes it or not, says inquiry chair Raymond Zondo.

State capture inquiry chair, deputy chief justice Raymond Zondo, said on Monday there is no place to hide for former president Jacob Zuma, who has been reluctant to appear before the commission.

Zondo, in a briefing about the commission’s progress, said that even if Zuma insists he has nothing to answer for, the commission is of a different view.

As more than 30 witnesses have implicated Zuma, there is no way he is going to be left alone, said Zondo.

The only scenario in which Zuma would not be compelled to appear before the commission, is if no-one had implicated him, said Zondo.

The commission is heading to the Constitutional Court, in a matter to be heard later this month, to enforce a summons it had issued against Zuma to appear on the week starting on January 18.

Besides, Zondo said, Zuma was the head of state during the period in which rampant public sector corruption and state capture allegedly took place.

“He [Zuma] is not keen to be heard because he does not believe there are any witnesses who have implicated him. In so far as the right to be heard is concerned, it is fine if he takes that attitude, but why we need [to call him] is more because the commission needs to put questions to him on various issues arising out of evidence given by various witnesses,” said Zondo.

“If we did not have questions for him and he did not want to be heard, we would have left him alone, but there are witnesses who have given evidence that raise certain questions, and the commission wishes to put those questions to him as to what his role might have been relating to certain things.

“That is quite important because he was the president of the country during most of the time during which most of the things that the commission is investigating are alleged to have happened, and there are witnesses who allege that he played certain roles.”

Zondo said that if witness allegations against Zuma were considered, “he might have abused his position as president” and cannot expect to get away with it.

“It is important that he be questioned before any finding be made on whether he abused his powers as president.

“Because of the position he held, it is important that the commission gets an opportunity to question him and get answers from him. He is one of the people who are specifically mentioned in the terms of reference of the commission whose conduct this commission must investigate.”

Zondo also announced that the commission had mostly completed hearing evidence relating to state-owned companies, with the exception of a few witnesses that must still appear.

Among other individuals and bodies that are due to appear in the remaining three months of oral hearings are Zuma, President Cyril Ramaphosa, parliament, the state security agency and the ANC as the governing party.

Since August 2018, when oral testimony began, the commission has gathered 1 billion gigabytes of data. This evidence was made up of:
