Oh yes he is! Happy 80th birthday to Ray Davies - you invaded my heart, mind and soul with your sensitivity, humor and stark emotion. I have enjoyed the better part of 2024 editing (along with a terrific team) a new edition of Doug Hinman's Day-By-Day Kinks book and I ran across this 1966 Ray quote from UK's Rave magazine which has lodged in my brain: “The biggest thing that could happen to me, would be for my songs to be listened to by someone in years to come, and for that someone to say, ‘I’m really moved, I know just what he was getting at.’” Ray, you did all that and much more. Your music has brought together many misfits who connect through our shared experiences. And I think that maybe we understand each other a little bit better because of your wonderful creations. The promise you & The Kinks stated on the back of the Village Green Preservation Society album in 1968 has come true: "You are our friends for listening."

I am thrilled to share I have two new books in development for this year via my Beatland Books imprint! Both are by long time colleagues of mine and both are filled with unimaginably wonderful information and images that you won't find anywhere else.

The Kinks – All Day And All Of The Night (Volume 1) • The Day-By-Day Story 1961-1971
by Doug Hinman
Originally published in 2004, this is a fully revised, greatly expanded and lavishly illustrated update of Doug Hinman’s epic Kinks book. It is so massively expanded, the story (which will span their entire career) is now broken into three volumes. We hope to have Volume 1 (covering their inception through all of their live, television and radio appearances as well as their wonderful Pye/Reprise recordings) delivered to you by late 2024, offered in hardcover and flexibound editions.

The Monkees – Smoke-Filled Dreams (The Unseen Photo Archive Of Joe Russo)

This all-new title lifts the lid on a massive archive of nearly 1,000 unpublished images of The Monkees. Spanning the years of their original incarnation (1965-1970), the book takes you on a behind-the-scenes history of Michael, Micky, David and Peter. It features unique images from the making of their television series, their live concert dates, shooting the movie Head and many more rarely captured moments. It will be offered in both hardcover and flexibound editions, delivered to you by this Fall 2024.

Poor old Orange Peel - his show The Orange Peel Hour has only raised $56 dollars, while The Orange Boutique has raised just $25 - he's promised to stay awake long enough to broadcast both shows today - his first is live in a few minutes. Let's hope he can pull through.

Today is the half-way point in the WFMU marathon 2024 (and they have quite a ways to go for their goal). On Saturday & Sunday, I dug through about a thousand singles to come up with today's selection of 40. I know we are inundated with fundraising this year, but if I may pitch on behalf of WFMU's worthiness: they support me in broadcasting to a large audience, many records and artists that are otherwise overlooked or completely unavailable in the digital realm or even online. Believe it or not, there are still thousands of records not on YouTube or Spotify. And I spend my spare time transferring them and doing my best to make them sound presentable. And WFMU have never restricted me in my creativity with making come to the sunshine - they are a truly freeform outlet. I'm coming up on 18 years of doing my show (WFMU hosts 7 years worth of archived shows which are free to all) and it is definitely time to retire...but I still have a lot of records to play. Being out of the country during the holidays, I missed out getting to share a link to my appearance on Mark Caro's Caropop. We got to talk for more than an hour about some of my personal history that was otherwise unrecorded (believe it or not). Regardless, Caropop is definitely worth listen for the other star guests like Colin Moulding, Paul Williams, Justin Hayward and literally countless others (a huge catalog). There is much to listen to and plenty to love!

Please become a Caropop Friend and support these lively conversations with creative people so we can keep them free and accessible to all.
