Before serving as the 39th president of the United States, before serving as the 76th governor of Georgia, Jimmy Carter served in a smaller but just as vital role: his children’s Scout leader.

Carter, who died Dec. 29 at the age of 100, served in a variety of adult leader roles beginning in 1951 for what was then known as the Chehaw Council.

And he was proud enough of those experiences to share them. Check out this letter from the Atlanta Area Council. The former president, responding to an inquiry from the council historian, confirms here the Carter family’s involvement in Scouting.
