Media Fields Journal Media Fields Journal is a platform for the dissemination of current research on the spatial dimensions of media.

The Media Fields research collective formed at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2007 to advance scholarship on the spatial aspects of a range of media forms, including film, television, radio, and digital media. The aim of Media Fields Journal is to circulate research on media and space, to function as a testing ground for new disciplinary trajectories, and to facilitate conversatio

ns that advance space, spatiality, and critical practice as crucial topics in the field of media studies.

NEW: The CFP for Media Fields Issue #16 - "Life Cycles" is now live.

"The Media Fields Editorial Collective at the UCSB Department of Film & Media Studies seeks proposals for papers that address the theme of “Life Cycles” as a critical framework through which explorations in media and space may be more closely examined. In particular, we seek submissions that consider the global dimensions of media life cycles in ways that frustrate stable notions of life and death."

The deadline to submit is June 1, 2020. Please share widely!

Media Fields Journal - Immediate Delay

"The prospect of an avant-garde introduces a problem of primacy, which we might consider a spatiotemporal problem: in a digital milieu, the position of an avant-garde emerges within technology."

Dive into the aesthetics of a digital milieu with Ryan Ikeda's "Immediate Delay: Temporalizing Aesthetic Experience in Amaranth Borsuk and Brad Bouse's Between Page and Screen." Now available to read online in Media Fields 14: At the Edge

This essay posits aesthetic experience in a digital milieu as matter in time; it blurs the edges of the work of art by considering it a spatiotemporal object. It centers on a work of augmented poetry, Amaranth Borsuk and Brad Bouse’s Between Page and Screen (2012). Methodologically, this essay adv...

Media Fields Journal - She Crawls - She Crawls Out of the TV, or On the Gendered Screen

"The screen, and the edges which confine it, not only extends an ambiguous line between defense and revelation but...also demarcates gendered spaces, the breaching of which inevitably signifies gendered violence."

Check out Jenna Ng's theorization of the screen edges in her piece, "She Crawls Out of the TV, or On the Gendered Screen," in Media Fields 14: At the Edge

Media Fields Journal - Issue 13: Mediating the Anthropocene

"'Mediating the Anthropocene' not only gives rise to theories, m**hods, and practices that explore how the Anthropocene is represented in popular media but also engages ongoing biopolitical exchanges, circulations, and frictions across multiple ecologies of scale. Attuned to the possibilities and the limitations of using Anthropocene as a paradigm, the articles in this issue trouble, negotiate, and expand epistemic understandings of media geographies and temporalities."
