In Melbourne, there's 11 local (submetro) community radio stations. Originally the plan was for five, one each for North, East, West, South and Central. However this turned into 11 on the heels of the Sydney situation where a similar number of local community stations were allowed to proceed. In March 1990 the ABA licenced 8 new local stations to join the pre-existing 3WRB, 3RIM and 3RPP. For these eight stations, they all share this year as a 30 year milestone of continuous licenced community broadcasting.

Gippsland will have a new Triple M from July 20th. It's not a new station, it's a renamed existing one, with HIT 94.3 becoming Triple M 94.3. This means that from Melbourne with good enough receiver, you can listen to Triple M from Melbourne, Bendigo and Gippsland and see how different they might be. Why the change? I guess there's some reasoning behind it, market research, perhaps most likely advertising driven, anyhow....
Here's the SCA spin on the change-over...

Well, it's back on air as the Mornington Peninsula's Easy Music "3MP". Started at 6pm 3/7 with an advert for Peninsula Curtains and Blinds. Sounds like the easy music last played before sport took it away. Welcome back 3MP.

Radio 3WRB vanished from the Melbourne airwaves today (16/1/2020). The station was the first of the sub Metro stations to benlicenced. It's history wasnt always ethnic programs and country music, rather it was originally associated with Footscray Tech College. The website stereo974.com (still online as of today) shows a good historical overview of the station. Details of the closure seem short in supply, however the licence was to have been surrendered to the ACMA and that, was that.

16/01/2020

3WRB FM (Stereo 974) has ceased broadcasting today on 97.4.

16/01/2020

3WRB 97.4 FM went off the air just after midday today Jan 16th 2020. The website offered no detail, there were no on air announcements to explain, and the audio stream continues on Tune In. There have been discussions suggesting this may happen, and obviously these were accurate. So, the longest running sub Metro community station in Melbourne has said goodbye to the airwaves. No d you, at the end it only carried Live program is g from non English language groups, the rest was automated with a country music "format" with no updated content.

16/01/2020

Stereo 974 (3WRB) ceased transmission today, around midday. The station's last programming was country music. There were rumours of the closure around various discussion groups however nothing was issued as an official explanation.

IT HAS BEEN A WHILE BUT THOUGHT I'd check how many radio stations in the USA use or have used Australian styled call letters. In fact these all derive from official call signs including 3 W's and one other letter, eg: WSWW - brands as 3WS. Yes there is also WWWW which brands as "4W Country". There seems to be usage of the 3W # and possible 3K #, but no other numerical prefix seems in use.

Southern suburbs based 88.3 FM (Southern FM*) off the air, transmitter still running. Probably a tech or linking problem, however its unusual not to run something from the transmitter site as an interim measure

Well, Hit 101.9 Fox finally got the flick, and 2day Sydney was also saved from a name change. Will it be possible that B105 and SAFM may refer to their old names instead of Hit105 and Hit107 ? Since the name change the stations lost audience and marched to near bottom of the survey.

Meanwhile 96 FM in Perth have launched a new website in the style and format of the east coast stations. It does not appear to have a changed logo YET, despite its sound being aligned to the Classic Rock Network, its been promoted to be a member of the KIIS network - Will Perth lose its rock station to become KISS 96 FM ? If you listen to it, you'll understand that going KIIS will absolutely and permanently ruin the station. www.96fm.com.au

Magic 1278 fires every announcer on its line up and places fill ins - have to ask if its Junking the station, to relaunching as a new format and identity ? This follows the "merger" of Fairfax's radio network and John Singleton's Macquarie Radio Network. Will we see MTR Mk II ?

When it obtained its "supplementary" FM Licence, 2AY moved its primary service to 104.9 as 2AY FM and identified it's AM station as simply 1494AM, However not too long afterwards, moved the 2AY branded station back to the AM band and launched B104.9 . B104.9 (2AAY) is better known now as STAR FM.

THE EAR SAYS: The Melbourne 3 Hit format stations fight continues. All three have similar sounding breakfast shows, as the contest for the narrowest playlist heats up. Some tracks are played every 90 minutes! And Mix/KIIS continues with the U.S. Ryan Seacrest show against locals on the other 2 stations. Gold is alone with the 80s as is Smooth with the easy music. Will Gold and Smooth be the winners from the 3 station fight to the death over the under 25s ?
