The attention of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Edgal Imohimi, has been drawn to the Punch Newspaper publication of Friday, August 24, 2018, captioned " Power-drunk Lagos DPO leads team to mosque, raid adherents, others."

The reporter mentioned that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Pen Cinema Police Division, Lagos State, Harrison Nwabuisi, has been conducting raids during which he allegedly arrested innocent residents and extorted money from them. He further reported that the police operation took place on Wednesday, being the last day of the Sallah holiday, at Alimi Ogunyemi Street, in the Ifako Ijaiye area and mentioned one Sheriff Aranjure as a prime witness to the alleged extortion by the DPO.

Sequel to the allegation, the CP has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, DCP Yetunde Longe, to investigate the officer and other ranks against whom the allegation was made. He equally directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration, DCP Elkanah Ayuba, to recall the DPO to the Command Headquarters to allow unbiased investigation into the matter.

The Command is therefore appealing to Mr. Sheriff Anjure, said to be a vital and indeed other witnesses in the matter, to make themselves available to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, SCIID, Panti Yaba, to assist police investigation.

While recognising the fact that raiding is a major crime fighting strategy of the police, given that it enables proactive intervention into a budding problem, the CP however said, that it must be purposeful, corruption free and Intelligence driven.

He therefore assures members of the public that if the allegation is true, any officer or men found culpable in the matter, would be appropriately sanctioned in accordance with the relevant sections of the Police Act.

FOR DANIEL EKWEREKWU THE THIEF, IT WAS A DAY OF RECKONING.

If Daniel Ekwerekwu an indigene of Aguleri, Anambra state, (going by the voter's card recovered from him), knew what fate had in stock for him at the early hours of today 12/08/2018, perhaps, he may have chosen another day to go vandalising people's cars.

Nemesis caught up with the said Daniel Ekwerekwu at Okungade street, Mende-Maryland, Ikeja, where he went on a perilous mission of car vandalisation to wit stealing of car body/engine parts.

However, at about 0604hrs, one of the owners of the cars being vandalised woke up to prepare for church service only to see Daniel vandalising his car.

He raised alarm which attracted a police patrol team from Anthony Police Division on neighbourhood patrol as well as neighbours. They chased after the thief who ran into a building. He tried to scale the fence but unfortunately for him, his hands slipped off the wall and he landed on a cemented floor breaking his skull as a result.

When the police searched his trousers pocket, they recovered a voter's card bearing his name and picture.

He was taken to Mainland Hospital Yaba where he was confirmed dead. The body was thereafter deposited at the hospital's morgue for autopsy.

The Commissioner of Police once again wishes to encourage Lagos communities that are yet to form neighbourhood vigilante groups to do so. The CP promises that once the vigilante group meets the requirements of the law, the Command will recognise it and back them up with armed policemen since vigilante groups are not allowed to bear fi****ms.

When Mrs Folashade Odunuga of No. 8 Ade Onitiri, Harmony Estate, Langbasa, Ajah, embarked on a 3-month vacation which commenced on May 27, 2018, little did she know that her apartment would be broken into and her household property including her car, stolen by eighteen-year-old Tega Teddy aided by his parents Mr. Uroye Teddy, 45 years old and his mother Mrs. Margaret Teddy. Also fingered in the offence is Tega's girlfriend, one Karima Edom, a close neighbour of the victim who allegedly passed information of the victim's absence from home to her boyfriend.

The stealing had been going on for weeks until the victim's househelp, one Eniola Abisola visited her mistress' house and discovered that a lot of items were missing. She couldn't understand how the thieves entered the apartment as all doors to the house remained closed.

She immediately alerted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in-charge of Langbasa Division, SP. Adaobi Okafor who mobilised her detectives to check on all in the neighbourhood whose names are in the station's watch list.

When the detectives checked on Tega, they saw the stolen Chevrolette Aveo saloon car with registration number AKD 512 AP, parked in the front his parents' house at New Osho layout, Langbasa. He was promptly arrested.

During interrogation, he revealed that he entered the victim's house through the ceiling and gradually, he began to pack the household items to his father's house. He narrated that his mother helped him to hide the stolen items in an uncompleted building while his girlfriend Karima, hid some in her house. The suspect, Tega, further revealed that his father went with him to the victim's house to tow the aforementioned car. It was seen that Mrs Margaret Teddy had put the stolen properties for sale.

Exhibits recovered from the suspects include: Chevrolette saloon car reg no. AKD 512 AP, 42 inches flat screen TV, LG Home theatre sound system, electric generator, one standing fan, 5 leather bags, an iPad baby shoes and other personal items.

He admonished that people should go back to our old way of visiting their neighbours to check on them. He added that if that was the case in this instance, Teddy and his girlfriend Karima wouldn't have had the effrontery to cook, eat and wine in Folashade Odunuga's house during her long absence from home.
