NYT bestseller Ralph Pezzullo steps into the Interrogation Room to try getting his story straight about his latest release, a fictionalized memoir called SAIGON.
Ralph grew up globetrotting as his father’s State Department assignments changed every few years. He lived in Saigon from 1962 to ’65, during the times of the Tonkin Gulf Incident, the overthrow of President Diem, a number of other coup d’etats, and almost daily Vietcong terror attacks against Americans. Ralph was in Bolivia while Che Guevara worked to establish a guerilla training camp there, and in Nicaragua during the first days of the Sandanista Revolution. He’s also lived in Uruguay, Mexico, Washington, D.C., Colombia, and Guatemala. He made friends with the locals wherever he lived, and he sometimes found that circumstances at the street level varied greatly from those advocated at higher levels of international diplomacy.
Ralph’s critically acclaimed writing has included thriller and mystery novels, nonfiction, plays, screenplays, and investigative journalism. He’s worked with directors such as Oliver Stone and James Foley, and with former CIA covert operative Gary Bernsten and former LAPD detective Steve Hodel.
His latest release, SAIGON, launched on November 1st. It’s a coming of age story based on his own experiences in Saigon during the early 60s.
In this episode, Ralph and host Gavin Reese discuss writing memoirs, fictionalizing personal experiences, and who would investigate Ralph's homicide.

In this episode, retired businessman David Rohfling steps into the Interrogation Room to try getting his story straight.
The first thing to known about David is that he suffered a major heart attack, a “widow maker,” in 2019 and had no sign of life for 15 minutes. Doctors brought him back, but he wants you to know that getting a Coronary Calcium CT Scan might help you avoid his fate. As most people with his condition are dead, he’d prefer that you not find out the hard way that your heart needs help.
Back to the show!
After a long career in business that allowed him to travel to all but one continent and countless countries around the globe, David created the Detective Sasha Frank Mystery Series. The award winning first novel in the series, “Deliberate Duplicity,” released in early January 2021. The second, “Cold Consequences,” released in July 2021, and the third installment will appear in 2022. David placed his detective in suburb of Bloomington, Illinois, which brings specific story and craft elements to his tales.
David and Gavin discuss writing small town and suburban cops versus bid city detectives, research and authenticity, and how you might avoid your next heart attack.

RESEARCH TIP FOR THE CRIME WRITERS OUT THERE...

You know all those little GPS tags that are available now? The ones that could go on your keyring, the dog's collar, the kid's bike? Pretty much anything you'd like to Lo-Jac? Well, I went on a virtual research trip and found that the magnetic tracking systems I used while I worked narcotics cases are now available online.... at walmart.com... and they're probably better made with more precise tracking and improved mapping capabilities than what we used.

So, if you're writing a bad guy who needs to be mysteriously well-informed about your victim's whereabouts, perhaps Walmart has your answer.

All that's left to do now is to sit down at the keyboard and bleed.

WRITERS ON THE BEAT - Crime Writers and Crime Fighters. Your host is Gavin Reese, a retired law enforcement officer and author.

Gavin has comforted the dying, talked dozens out of su***de, and saved domestic abuse victims from their assailants. He’s taken child rapists, murderers, and human traffickers into police custody. Gavin’s had the distinct honor of protecting visiting foreign royalty and national American political figures from both sides of the aisle. He’s been trained by a variety of Special Forces operators, as well as those who trained them. Several of his friends and colleagues have been murdered or killed, and he’s occasionally been tasked to pursue those responsible. Despite yesterday’s successes, Gavin wakes up every day and dons his gun and badge with the sincere hope to affect positive change in the lives around him. Perpetually unsatisfied with previous accomplishment, he hopes to have someday saved enough strangers that they, in turn, will collectively save him.

When not serving others, Gavin can frequently be found outdoors or involved in what his wife calls “reindeer games.” With a love of practical jokes and the long-con, Gavin’s been an accused, and occasionally confirmed, shenaniganator for most of his life. He summits tall mountains, swims in deep oceans, brews mediocre beer, and has a strong opinion on the Oxford comma. His curiosity about the world and its peoples and cultures have inspired a love of travel, spontaneous adventure, and lifelong learning. Gavin knows his greatest blessing is his wife; he wakes up every day grateful she continues to share her life with him, and that she’s still willing to play along. In addition to aiding crime victims, a portion of all Gavin’s sales is donated to charities that serve law enforcement professionals, their families and heirs, and honor the memories of our Fallen Heroes.

More information and Gavin’s blog are available at his website: https://gavinreese.com/
