Whenever I meet someone new, maybe at a networking event or even when speaking to a family member or a friend about my work, the first question they often ask is "What is marketing?" Or they have an assumption that they know what it is, and ask "Oh so you phone people to get them to sign up to something?" or "Can you get me name plaque for my desk?". The answer to both of those questions is no.

Marketing is as broad as it is wide and involves a lot of organisation, planning and development before a marketing activity can take place.

Following the announcement from Facebook, many small businesses have been wondering whether there's any point in continuing to spend time, money and effort in this channel. I can assure you there is, but you do need to re-look at your strategy and consider the type of content that you're sharing.

Previously (and to a lesser extent currently) the odd 'like' and preferable 'share' would get you into a newsfeed. With the new changes that are to come into effect, you need to focus on getting comments, as this is how we can encourage the meaningful interactions that Mark Zuckerberg is so keen for.

This will mean more time will need to be spent on your posts as they need to be more considered. Advertising will still have a role, but a lesser one than now.

Most of the examples in this case study are big brands, so you think they can afford to be a bit cheeky and risqué with their social media. Start getting used to using it more. People are more likely to part with their hard-earned cash if they can direct message you. Plus it's a great tool for businesses as messages even appear on a locked screen. There's not much more you can do to guarantee reaching your target audience.
