Despite being an admirer of all aspects of cinema, Nicholas always favoured the horror genre, particularly for its underrated,
complex artistry, unique storytelling methods, and the dedication of its knowledgeable fanbase. For years, trips to the fading video store chains had increasingly yielded soulless remakes, sequels and disappointment. Hungering for the intelligent, original content that had led him to enroll in film school, he began hunting through international, non-western horror cinema, particularly by European and Asian directors. Influences included Italian directors Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci, Japanese directors Hideo Nakata and Takashi Shimizu, and French directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, Alexandre Aja and Pascal Laugier, to name a few. This appreciation led into new mediums, including the Survival Horror genre of video games, where again, traditional techniques and assumptions about horror and storytelling are turned on their heads. With originality being continually underrated in newer visual entertainment, Rending Pictures was established in direct response. To develop and showcase original content, as well as offer filmmaking services to and engage with like-minded pioneers. To make the kind of content we want to see, regardless of the genre or medium.
