AMH Caring Kind Winner Announced! Pictured: Charlene Hughes, RN, is the 2024 Caring Kind Award Winner of Antelope Memorial Hospital. She was recognized for this prestigious award on Tuesday during National Hospital Week.
Each year, the Nebraska Hospital Association honors employees from hospitals across the state as “Caring Kind” employees. The honored employee must exemplify the spirit of someone who gives that “something special” to others.
Charlene began her career in 1971 at Antelope Memorial Hospital as a nurse aid. In 1972, she attended college at Pierre School of Practical Nursing in Pierre, South Dakota where she acquired her LPN degree. Afterwards, she returned to work as a LPN at AMH. In 1986, she and five other LPN co-workers began additional training to become registered nurses (RNs) through the College of St. Mary’s nursing program, offered at Northeast Community College in Norfolk. The program required student attendance every other weekend for three years. During this time, Charlene worked her open weekends at AMH.
Following graduation and the completion of boards, Charlene began working as an RN on the nursing floor at Antelope Memorial Hospital in Spring 1989. In 2016, she started working primarily in the clinic while also filling in as needed on the floor. In 2023, she began serving PRN at both the clinic and hospital. Through the years, Charlene has remained to be a loyal employee and served with exceptional commitment to the hospital, her co-workers and her patients and their families.
Charlene was nominated and selected by her fellow employees to win this year’s “Caring Kind” award. Her nomination describes her as a very loyal employee and great nurse while being very knowledgeable in her profession. She is very pleasant and works well with her co-workers. She is always willing to help when needed both on the nursing floor and in the clinic. She takes very good care of her patients while always being kind and caring towards them and their families. In addition, she is very active in the community and church. She also participates in the Nurse Honor Guard, honoring nurses at the time of their passing. She is a huge asset to Antelope Memorial Hospital!
“It’s truly an honor to be chosen for this special award,” said Charlene. “I began my nursing career at AMH and this is my family here! Through the years, I’ve enjoyed working here and watching AMH evolve. It’s been a remarkable journey. Plus, it’s fun to work here. Our patient rooms are large and aesthetically pleasing with state-of-the art technology for helping us to provide top quality care. I also enjoy spending time with my patients – it’s very rewarding.”
Charlene and her husband, Ted, currently reside in Neligh. They have four children. Autumn and her husband, Trevor Colpetzer, and family (Calin, Kiah and Izzy) reside in Wahoo. Nathan and his wife, Brynn, and family (Micah, Molly and Hank) reside in Neligh. Lacey and her husband, Greg P**n, and family (Clara, Edie and Remy) reside in Battle Creek. Alex lives in Neligh. Charlene’s hobbies include spending time with her grandchildren, pickleball, flower and vegetable gardening and camping.
On Friday, October 18th, the Nebraska Hospital Association will host an award presentation at the Embassy Suites Conference Center in LaVista honoring Charlene and other “Caring Kind Award” recipients in Nebraska.

Obituary For Paul Hecht
Paul Albert Hecht was born on March 2, 1964, at Tilden Hospital to Frank and Eleanor Nancy Forge Hecht. He died March 20, 2024, in a tragic accident. He was the third of seven siblings. Life on the Hecht farm was full of hours spent outside working and playing. The siblings were close, especially the boys, who grew up loving hunting, motorcycles, and adventures. The work was walking beans, putting up hay, and wrangling hogs. Paul always made it fun and was full of shenanigans. When Paul was 10, he was burned in an accident on the farm that left him in the Omaha hospital for several weeks. His return was celebrated by his family and siblings, who missed a playmate. The following year, his sister Kathy was born and completed the family. Being her older brother, Paul gave Kathy many rides on his dirt bike or motorcycle when she was a toddler. Paul was the life of the party out with friends and at family gatherings. He made everyone laugh with his famous one-liners and observations. He attended the Sturgis motorcycle rally every year with his close friends and his brother Mark.
Paul graduated from Elkhorn Valley Schools in 1982. It was there that he made lifelong friends who have held a special bond to this day. After graduation, he attended Chadron State College for two years, then returned to work while contemplating his next move. He enrolled at the University of Nebraska Lincoln in January 1987 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in agronomy in December 1989. He started a job with the Farmers Home Association (FHA) in Omaha, and from there, he was moved to the Chadron office. In 1992, he moved back to Tilden and worked as a sales representative for Superior/Fontenelle Seeds. Later, he joined EBM out of Norfolk and eventually started his own business named TB (Top & Bottom) Manlift. With this business, he traveled the Midwest, inspecting and servicing manlifts on grain elevators. He also fulfilled a dream to start farming part-time. In 2013, he moved to the family farm that has been in his family for over 100 years. His father, Frank, had a lifelong dream of building a log cabin on that farm, and Paul completed that dream in 2013.
On September 26th, 1993, Paul married Stephanie Bachman of Glenwood, Iowa, at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Catholic Church in Tilden, and together they raised their son, Tucker. The couple later divorced. As a family, they shared many adventures and travels to Europe, Hawaii, Mexico, and places in the US. Paul loved to attend Tucker’s activities and sporting events. They rode motorcycles together, and Paul would ride to Rapid City to visit Tucker while he attended college there. He was so proud of the man he became.
Paul is survived by his son, Tucker Hecht of Lenexa, Kansas, his mother Nancy Hecht of Battle Creek, and six siblings: Lisa (Paul) Mettler of Chicago, Mark (Mary) Hecht of Tilden, Anne (Jim)Meis of Elgin, Emily (Merle) Borer of Elgin, John (Stacy) Hecht of Lincoln, and Kathleen (Scott) Margheim of Columbus, nieces and nephews, and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Hecht, in 2010 and infant sister, Sarah, in 1972.

The Elkhorn Valley High School (EVHS) Falcon boys’ basketball team made history Monday evening, defeating Summerland, 71-53, in the Class C2-5 district final and qualifying for the NSAA Class C2 State Basketball Tournament.

There were still three C2 district games to be played Tuesday evening: Hartington Cedar Catholic vs. Yutan, Tri County vs. Wakefield, and Elmwood-Murdock vs. Gordon-Rushville.
Five Class C2 qualifiers were determined Monday: Elkhorn Valley, Freeman, Doniphan-Trumbull, Norfolk Catholic, and Amherst.

The Class C2 championship game is Saturday, March 11, at 4:15 p.m. played at the Pinnacle Bank Arena.
The Class C2 third place consolation game is at 9:00 a.m. at Lincoln Southeast High School.
The Meadow Grove and Tilden school districts consolidated in 1967, and the district was renamed Elkhorn Valley Public Schools, first opening its doors for the 1967-1968 school year.
