Recorded during the isolation of Covid, Noah Landis, Matt Parrillo, and Geoff Evans crafted “The Future Died Yesterday”, an album that sounds both varied and cohesive, combining musical and emotional heaviness with melody, samples, and synth. This is Nocturnal Field Song, track 6 of my Harvestman - Triptych: Part One album.
This is Dave French and I playing along with the crickets during a late summer night here in our little piece of forest in North Idaho on an old galvanized steel stock tank.
During the winter of 2019 / 2020 while clearing our road with my old Suburban armed with a large snow plow, I accidentally tore a large hole in the side of the steel stock water tank that we keep on the property for the deer and moose. When the snow melted, I was rolling it to my truck to take to the scrap yard when I realized that it sounded amazing. It also had the beautiful remains of some feathered relatives encrusted on the inside. I started hitting it in various places and realized it had many different sounds in it and that I would keep it as a percussion instrument. Fast forward a few months, my friend, Dave French (now drummer of Yob) came out to stay with us for a while and join me in composing some tracks based on this large galvanized piece of steel.
We rolled it into the barn close to my studio, put microphones on it and started to improvise rhythms. We noticed the crickets outside were so loud they would end up on the recording, so we opened the barn doors and allowed their pulse to become the tempo. The crickets lead us through this take. Back in the studio we added synth drones, processed guitar noise, and some dub style delay effects on the percussion. It resulted in a perfectly captured moment of a dark moody summer night in the forest.
