It's the week of Christmas. Coast to coast, north to south, everyone seems frustrated while awaiting south-bound ducks, asking themselves where in the hell are the ducks?! Is the sky falling? Do we really even have ducks? Or is the answer a little more straight forward? Waterfowl migration guru Dr.....

Some breakdown of May - July average temps (upper left) and precipitation (upper right) ranks by climate division, global temp departure from average for July to show Canada (lower left), and active wildfires and resulting aerosols (lower right). Importantly the eastern prairies have been wet and temperature near or just above normal = good for duckling production. But do remember that many, many ducks overflew the prairies before these rains started. For the western prairies and much of the Canadian prairies (other than Manitoba) we see dry conditions and the resulting wildfires still running. So a bit of a toss up for ducks this year, the BPOP results are going to come any day now and The FowlWeather Podcast will drop a special BONUS episode ASAP.

Lotsa rain in parts of eastern Canada from Debby last week.

Lotsa rain in parts of eastern Canada from Debby last week.

Late last week, from Thursday August 8 to Friday August 9, the remnants of tropical storm Debby interacting with a low-pressure system near the Great Lakes produced record rainfall amounts over parts of southern Ontario Thursday night into Friday and over Quebec on Friday. Along the St. Lawrence Valley, from Cornwall to Trois-Rivières, 130 mm to 160 mm fell, with a maximum of 221 mm at Lanoraie. 🌧️

Some of the regions hardest hit by the weather system received as much or more rain in 24 hours than they normally would throughout the entire month of August.

Areas like Montreal, Saint-Hubert, l’Assomption and Trois-Rivière even broke their all-time record of daily rainfall:

➡️Montréal (Dorval Airport): 154 mm (previous record: 93.5 mm on November 8, 1996)
➡️Montréal (Downtown): 145 mm (previous record: 102.8 mm on November 8, 1996)
➡️Saint-Hubert Airport: 135 mm (previous record: 106 mm on November 8, 1996)
➡️L'Assomption: 132 mm (previous record: 103.1 mm on June 19, 1978)
➡️Trois-Rivières: 114 mm (previous record: 110.5 mm on August 22, 1935)

According to our long-term statistics, the total amount of precipitation that fell along the St. Lawrence Valley represents a return period of 100 years or more, meaning that this level of rainfall is only expected to happen once or less in 100 years. Therefore, this event is very rare.

☔The heavy rain caused considerable damage, with thousands of homes flooded, roads and culverts washed away, and Highway 13 in Montreal closed for many days due to damaged sewer pumps. In the days following the event, the city of Montreal had to call upon residents to avoid placing water-damaged belongings on the sidewalks too quickly, as the shear number of items was overwhelming. Winds also picked up towards the end of the precipitation, causing over 500,000 power outages across southern Quebec.

📷 Total precipitation accumulation from August 8 and 9 across eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.

Hurricane and Tropical Storm Debby filled up those streams, rivers, and wetlands along the Atlantic coast for sure! From top left (August 8th), to top right (August 9th), to lower left (August 10th) you can see the change in colors to alotta black dots or "high" conditions". With more storms on the way this August to October most folks shouldn't have trouble getting water in wetlands in many places in the eastern US.

75% of fall food plots are in and ready for rain. We run most plots as dwarf essex brassica, non-GMO soybeans (no need to spray Fall beans because w**d competition doesn't matter), sunflowers, and Austrian winter peas. We did a test plot this year that included red Russian kale, sugar beets (left over seed), and Austrian Winter peas.

We tilled outside our summer soybeans this year because our medium red clover was failing, so we also added medium red clover over the top.

Remaining plots will get Winter rye and underseeding of medium red clover in corn and sorghum areas that are getting rotated out for 3 years. These will be seeded in late August or early Sept.

Some folks think we are late on our brassica planting but given how warm the fall seasons have been it is likely spot on. I would have even waited another 1.5 weeks if we didn't have Debby tropical rains coming; that will easily set it all off, especially w the good daytime highs and reasonable nighttime temps thereafter.

Ok. Maybe we think about it too much but the deers have been happy and the freezer venison flowing, so no complaints about being detailed and calculated in our plantings.

Also, all of this is Jager approved, even the growing fruit orchard, which is her favorite stop for snacks on morning walks!

The 91.5 million acres of corn planted this year was 3% less than 2023. In 2023, a record corn yield of 15.3 billion bushels were produced. This year, greater than 65% of the corn in the US is in good to excellent condition compared to less than 55% in 2023.

Are we on schedule for another record year for corn? With corn at less than $4 per bushel and last year's supply still being sold into the market, what will the coming year bring for farmers? It does look like farm costs have gone up and dollars per bushel are going down.

So what's this got to do with ducks? Check out Episode 27 - THE CORN EPISODE https://open.spotify.com/episode/2S84eAc459ANmOjyaEUkxz?si=9651c1237a3e4a14

Water conditions are looking good in most areas in the Mississippi and Atlantic Flyways. Our thoughts are with those dealing with Debby right now, but it will leave a path of water all up and down the Atlantic coast for fall 2024. To find out more about conditions expected this fall and winter, check out episode 45 on The FowlWeather Podcast where we start to make our first predictions about weather affecting duck migration for 2024-2025. And as always, follow, like, rate, and share.
