***Update: Helena adopted! 4 dogs and 2 bunnies from our 12 Strays of Christmas are still looking for homes. Fees waived thru 12/31!***

Our 12th Stray of Christmas is Helena, the 4 y/o shepherd mix. 🖤 We are truly baffled as to why this girl has yet to be adopted.

She joined us on set of a morning talk show hardly batting an eye - resting quietly in her crate the whole drive to LA! She mingles in the yard and engages in some play with other large dogs. She behaves well and is quiet indoors - with an occasional bark or two at a newcomer! (She is a shepherd after all). She loves to work for treats and knows sit and down.

If you are looking for a striking, medium energy lady in your life... Helena would make the perfect partner in crime. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions about her in the comments below.,

OJO CON CIERRES DE CALLES.

***ROAD CLOSURE UPDATE***
Thurs., 12/21/23 - 10:15 a.m.

The majority of roads have been reopened within the City of Oxnard as of 10 a.m.
- EB Oxnard Blvd. and Statham (Left Turn) is closed

Additional rain is being forecasted throughout the day on Thursday, Dec. 21.

Community members should continue to listen to forecasts from the National Weather Service, exercise caution while driving, and stay off the roads during heavy rainfall.

There is the potential for street closures later today if we receive more heavy rainfall in Oxnard. Be vigilant and follow signs for closures and detours when they are posted.

As the wet road conditions are expected to continue through Friday, we ask that our community please drive extra carefully. It is always important to treat traffic safety as a high priority every day, but we ask that all drivers, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians use extra caution in the rain. Slow down - high speeds increase the all-around danger of driving in rain. Traffic safety is everyone's responsibility. Please take the extra time to be careful and stay safe.

URGE QUE ADOPTEN A ESTE PERRITO, YA NO SOPORTA ESTAR ENCERRADO EN EL REFUGIO DE ANIMALES DE CAMARILLO

Urgent Behavior Request for 2 y/o kennel stressed Cooper ‼️ Looking for transfer or an experienced adopter ASAP.

Initially affectionate Cooper has been exhibiting a series of worsening jumpy/mouthy behaviors. His kennel stress continues to increase the longer he is in shelter care - as do his concerning behaviors. He needs out!

Cooper arrived at our shelter in September after being left behind by a former family member. He was described as "affectionate" and "easy to walk" by volunteers. Cooper started jumping and mouthing at the arms of those trying to leash him - but using treats, his volunteer friends were able to make sure he got time out of his kennel where he was much more relaxed!

As more time went on Cooper started losing weight, and we began to see him jumping so high in the kennel that his head hit the roof, along with more mouthiness. In December we started him on medication to manage his stress - and at first it seemed to help! He continued to enjoy walks, learning commands, petting and even went on a staff pack walk with other dogs!

In the last week Cooper's behavior has escalated. On Dec 12, Cooper jumped 6ft to face level and attempted to bite a veteran staff member, narrowly avoiding contact. The chest and sleeve were ripped out of the staff member's shirt. For a less experienced handler - this outcome could have been much different.

Cooper needs an EXPERIENCED, DEDICATED individual or transfer partner who will help him work through his stress and difficult behaviors. We are including him in our 12 Strays of Christmas adoption campaign - but finding him the right home is crucial and will require additional counseling before approval.

PLEASE let us know if you have a heart for dogs with behavioral needs and the skills to provide the right management. Kennel stress is no joke. Four months in a shelter is difficult on a dog's mental and physical health - he needs a chance and someone to help him thrive. 💙
