So I bought a Mackie DLZ Creator recently, but I'm sad to say I'll be returning it. Here's a quick review why;

So I've used Mackie desks before, and I love their audio quality from the preamps. This desk is no different - honestly the sound alone actually made me consider keeping it for future production works, but a £680 investment can't be gathered lightly.

Now here's the rub why I can't use this desk, and this is partially on a research failure. So the DLZ Creator is marketed as for use in Podcasts and Livestreams. Single room podcasters will be hard pressed to get a better desk than this, but livestreamers so probably avoid this at all cost - and it all comes down to the device routing.

Routing on this machine is hard fixed to the lines and mixes of the device itself, there's no app control when interfacing with a PC. That in itself is fine but here's the double rub. There's two routing modes, one that allows you to create a mix and a sub mix - one for you one for your stream (for example) of a multi track mode, which turns the lines into virtual audio cables and allows you to use them individually - the issue here is it localizes you lines to mono and then on the PC makes them a stereo mix of two lines. So for example if you have mics on lines 1 and 2 of the mixer, you can't separate them. They are the mono left and right of the one Virtual audio cable. Not only that, the Virtual Cables do not follow any of the mix you do on the mixer, only the set up gain - making the mixer essentially a glorified gain k**b.

To get the mixes I needed for a simple stream I had to use the headphone ports, lined into my PC, manually mixed with the headphones of the boards. That was just to make sure I had a volume slider for my mic.

Furthermore you're hard limited to only two digital lines, with line 9/10 hard set to be Bluetooth, disk or NDI. This means to split my PC audio, Discord Calls and music - I had to relegate discord or Spotify to MY PHONE and then Bluetooth connect it in? The lack of flexibility makes day to day streaming a hard pass for anyone in the Gaming sphere or say doing any form of remote production.
