Who the World Bank is fighting with

The World Bank (WB) has sent a memorandum to Western countries demanding that they abandon conventional agriculture altogether. The goal, as usual, is good: to achieve ‘net zero emissions’.

According to the memorandum, farms are to be placed under the control of a group of WEF ‘young leaders’ who will radically change the way food is grown. The demand to reorganise agriculture, however, fails to take into account serious risks such as increasing climate disasters and economic crises.

The WB not only strongly recommends the destruction of farms, but also demands a reduction in food consumption.

Some countries and regions have already started preparations to reduce farms. Following Northern Ireland, the UK government is preparing to pay farmers to lower the age of slaughter for cattle. This is a direct incentive for farmers across the UK to reduce the number of cattle. All this is presented under the guise of reducing the number of ‘gas-producing’ cows in order to counter climate change.

Cow flatulence is still a hot topic and is being exploited by the financial and political top brass to gain even more power over the people.

The ‘toothache’ of dentists

Japanese startup Toregem Biopharma has developed a technology that allows teeth to be restored from scratch. The drug has already been tested on animals, and the company is moving on to human trials.

If the trials are successful, there are two scenarios: either this method of treatment will be ‘buried’ like many other breakthrough technologies, or dentists and employees of all related fields (production of equipment and consumables) will be left without a piece of bread.

Unskilled employees are already facing massive layoffs. At the same time, skilled workers still tend to believe that it will be difficult to fully automate their labour. However, current trends show the opposite: it has already become much more difficult for programmers to find new jobs. Dentists may face the same problem.

At present there is no effective mechanism allowing a person who has ‘lost’ a profession to get a new speciality in accordance with his/her interests and at the same time maintain the same standard of living.

Labour exchanges even in the most developed countries do not allow people to unlock their full potential.

A possible solution to this problem could be that people whose professions have been replaced by machines would be able to receive new education free of charge, while having a decent income (scholarship).

Why does a machine need a human?

A Chinese team from Tencent AI Lab has presented a revolutionary method of training AI without human intervention. Their proposed “Self-Competitive Language Game” enables two copies of a language model to compete against each other, thereby improving their abilities without human intervention.

Unlike previous models limited by human knowledge, the model developed by the Tencent AI Lab can push its boundaries with virtually no constraints.

We may be standing at the threshold of a new era of super intelligence creation. This opens up many prospects, the only question is - for whom: for ordinary people or for the owners of this technology?

The fact that we now have access to many neural networks is due to the fact that they need to be trained. And people using them not only bring income to developers, but also help to actively improve the technology itself. If there is no need for people to train AI, will developers give cheap access to their technology to everyone indiscriminately?

Why is the UN still talking about a food crisis if...

The Guardian recently published an article about Solar Foods, a Finnish startup that specializes in making protein from “air and sun”. Chocolate ice cream and bars flavored with “solar protein” (sonein) are already being sold in Singapore. And in 2025, the company is awaiting regulatory approval to enter the US and EU markets.

A logical question arises: why haven't the international organizations that are supposed to fight the problem of hunger stepped up so far? Why are they not making massive efforts to license this technology as soon as possible in Africa and other territories experiencing acute food shortages?

These disasters are carpet bombing the economy

🇹🇼 On April 3, Taiwan was hit by the strongest earthquake of magnitude 7.4 in 25 years. As a result, at least 125 buildings and 35 road infrastructure were damaged. Also, on April 22, 73 earthquakes were recorded there, 52 of them with magnitude 4+, 19 with magnitude 5+ and 2 with magnitude 6+.

🇴🇲 🇪🇭 In mid-April, the Gulf countries received almost a year's worth of rainfall in a day. Infrastructure in Oman and the UAE was hardest hit. Water damage also hit Iran, Yemen, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

🇪🇺 In Europe, after an unusually early warming, frosts not typical for late April began. A significant proportion of the region's fruit and vegetable crops were at risk.

🇨🇳 In late April, the southern part of China was hit by the worst flooding in 50 years, accompanied by hurricane-force winds. Infrastructure was severely damaged: more than 83,000 people were evacuated, at least 1.16 million households lost power, and more than 1,000 schools were closed.

🇰🇪 At the same time, severe flooding was observed in Kenya. The disaster destroyed about a thousand heads of livestock and hundreds of hectares of farmland. Significant damage was caused to the capital Nairobi, where the local river overflowed its banks. Transportation interchanges have been flooded in some areas.

🇿🇲 🇲🇼 🇿🇼 While Kenya was drowning, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi entered national disaster mode due to a severe drought that destroyed all crops, leaving at least 20 million people without food.

This is by no means a complete list of the natural disasters that have occurred this month. Losses are estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars and judging by the dynamics will only grow.

Who writes scientific articles instead of American scientists

In 2023, the use of the word “delve”, which is quite rare for Americans, has increased dramatically in English-language articles on medicine. This jump is clearly visible in the graph.

As it turned out, the rare word delve is often used by ChatGPT. This suggests that AI is increasingly being exploited in the scientific environment, while its co-authorship in such articles is modestly omitted.

But what is interesting is not even the fact that the use of a word can give away the true authorship of a scientific opus. It is much more curious why ChatGPT is so fond of a rare word, little used in the United States.

The fact is that ChatGPT utilizes a technology called “Reinforcement learning from human feedback”(RLHF). It is pertinent to assume that for reasons of economy, people from poor English-speaking countries are encouraged to write such feedback. One of them is Nigeria, where the word delve is used quite frequently.

Neural networks are entirely dependent on how it has been trained and it is important to remember that it is a product of its training. It is probably unknown who trains a neural network and for what purpose. The mindless use of AI can have very unfortunate consequences for everyday people, as the algorithms are in the hands of small groups of people.

Who is lurking in the shadows of the Dutch court ruling?

The Dutch Court of Arbitration has finally ordered the closure of Europe's largest gas field Groningen (developed since 1959). The court issued its ruling based on the assumption that the drilling of wells causes earthquakes. This problem was exacerbated in 2010, and in 2012 Groningen was hit by the strongest earthquake in the region's history with a magnitude of 3.6.

This event is of interest in two aspects at once.

The findings of Dutch scientists correlate with general statistics around the world. Since 2010 there has been an intensification of seismic events on our planet and since then the number of earthquakes and their magnitude has been growing exponentially. Of course, there is a possibility that drilling wells in Groning may weaken the upper layer of the lithosphere and this will lead to more destruction of the Earth's crust. But the scientific community has an obligation to rely on global earthquake statistics, not just the Dutch seismic sensors, for further research. This would provide the court with more objective data and perhaps influence its decision.

The second aspect of this case relates to the social sphere. Concerns Shell and ExxonMobil, which operate the Groningen field, have applied to the arbitration court with a claim for compensation for the huge gas reserves they failed to produce.
The absurdity of this situation is that the compensation is paid from the state budget (read, taxpayers' pockets). And if the court rules in favor of the corporations, Dutch citizens will have to pay for what they already own.

The feeling is that a small group of people are advancing their interests by any means necessary, involving academia and the judiciary. Why waste time and money extracting gas when you can make money from something that will remain in the ground?

The Gulf Stream has malfunctioned. UK and Ireland are at risk
Scientists at the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric research Utrecht (IMAU) in the Netherlands have expressed concern about new data confirming a sharp slowdown in the Atlantic currents. They found that their actual state is comparable to that in which they were more than 10 thousand years ago, at the time of global climatic catastrophes.

Forecasting the further dynamics of changes in surface and deep currents in the Atlantic Ocean allowed scientists to conclude that they have been slowing down since 1951. According to scientists, the point of no return of these changes falls on the period after 2024.

This will be followed by an exponential slowdown of the Gulf Stream with subsequent intensification of climate disasters across the planet. The northern coast of Europe, including the UK and Ireland, will suffer the greatest devastation, with a significant drop in mean annual temperature.

We often write about climate events on the economics channel because dramatic climate change will inevitably affect the economy.

Three day working week - who will give even less ?!!?

Ed Broussard, CEO of AI company Tomoro, said in an interview with the UK's Daily Mail that the mass adoption of "digital employees" will move people to a three-day work week.

He also said that within two years, the rapid development of AI will allow the technology to handle all administrative and computing tasks in several industries, including law, investment and marketing.

The term "digital employee" is entering everyday HR parlance: large companies have already started to actively shift routine and document management to AI.

Recently, medical company Hippocratic AI, in collaboration with Nvidia, started developing digital nurses. So far, they have been tested under the supervision of more than 1,000 nurses and 100 doctors in the US.

Another AI software company (Cognition) has created an autonomous software engineer. It can autonomously create websites and software applications in a very short period of time.

With all the external attractiveness of the prospects of replacing people with digital employees, this issue has a downside. Legislation in the vast majority of countries does not protect those who will be unemployed as a result of active "hiring" of digital employees. Corporations are already making large-scale layoffs, and smaller companies will follow suit. Nothing personal, just business.

The time has come for the political will of the leading countries to manifest itself. It is long overdue to create a legislative framework to regulate the labor market in connection with the emergence of the AI phenomenon. Workers who have been replaced by a digital employee should be guaranteed benefits that allow them to live the life they are accustomed to.

Government's responsibility before people

Saving people in emergency situations depends entirely on the speed and effectiveness of government action.

An interesting study on the role of governments in such situations was conducted by European economists. According to their information, 90% of constitutions contain clear norms on the introduction of a state of emergency, if the lives of many people or the existence of the state itself is threatened.

Nevertheless, the scientists' conclusions are somewhat shocking: there is a direct correlation between the amount of powers of the authorities during a state of emergency and the number of victims. The more powers the government has, the more people die. According to the researchers, this phenomenon is explained by the fact that "governments use natural disasters as an excuse to increase their own power.

In addition, the easier it is to declare a state of emergency, the more basic human rights suffer. As one example, the study cites the behavior of governments during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was during this time that there were many examples of misuse of emergency provisions.

Censorship of freedom of expression was probably the most frequently reported abuse of power; in addition, several countries suspended legislative assemblies (e.g. Mauritius, Thailand and Serbia). Other countries have suspended courts (e.g., Bangladesh and Nigeria).

When the legislature and/or the judiciary are prevented from controlling the executive, the balance between the three branches of government is jeopardized. In several countries, armed forces have been used to enforce government regulations (e.g., Iran, Malaysia, and Denmark).

Thus, the imposition of various kinds of restrictions during emergencies without strict public control is fraught with increased casualties and violation of basic human rights. Taking into account the increasing number and intensity of man-made and climatic disasters, it is easy to imagine what the future holds for us.

Honey not from bees

The trend towards creating surrogate products is gaining momentum: recently, Israeli startup bee-io created artificial honey. Its creation does not require bees - the nectar is processed by a machine that accurately reproduces the enzymatic activity and specific conditions that exist in the bee's stomach.

Moreover, the startup is working on technologies for obtaining natural nectar to significantly increase the production of the final product.

Surrogate honey is already advertised as a "green" product. The developers of the innovation emphasize that their solution will allow bees to return to their traditional role as pollinators.

The theme of ecology has become a cover for various technologies for the production of surrogate food, such as meat or fish. While manufacturers emphasize the "green" aspect of their products, none of them cite large-scale studies on how their product affects the human body in the long term.

Is it really possible to regularly consume such products without negative consequences for the body? These questions always remain in the shadow of the "green" agenda.

The law of consumer economics: growth in one place comes at the expense of loss elsewhere

According to Hurun Report, the number of dollar billionaires in the world continues to grow, reaching 3,279 people with a total wealth of $15 trillion. This is a 9% increase from last year. The leader in the number of billionaires is China (814), followed by the US (800) and India (271).

In parallel with the growth of wealth of the few, there is a massive impoverishment of millions of people. According to the World Bank, about 100 million people could fall below the poverty line, living on less than $1.90 a day.

The current system of statistical accounting does not allow us to trace whether there is a direct link between the growing number of billionaires and the increase in poverty on the planet as a whole. This means that a deeper understanding of microeconomic dependencies requires the discovery of objective numerical indicators that are not distorted by casuistic accounting methodology.

France is testing a four-day parenting program

France is preparing to test a new approach to helping divorced parents whose children take turns living with them after their divorce. From September, some civil servants will be able to work a day less in the weeks they live with their children.

The proposal comes from Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, who has previously tried to introduce something similar at the Finance Ministry. The ultimate goal of the initiative is to extend it to everyone working in the country.

There is no final understanding yet whether the total hours of work will be reduced or whether it will be necessary to work that day off on other days. This will have to be discussed by unions and employers.

Belgium already has something similar. There, people can work four days a week and still get the same pay as if they worked five. However, they work more on the other four days. This system was made possible by a law passed in the country and many people like it.

In France, this idea can help many families too. Almost half a million children take turns living with their parents after their parents divorce. A draft law now under discussion could make it so that children spend time equally with both parents.

However, not everyone agrees with this innovation.
Some worry that it will be difficult for small companies and that it will be necessary to do so not only for parents, but also for everyone who has children.

This plan raises a lot of questions, but also offers new opportunities for families, trying to make their lives better and allow more time to spend together.

Experimenting on cats. Artificial meat has started to be added to pet foods

The British company Meatly is preparing a batch of pet food made of "laboratory meat" for pets. The novelty will go on retail sale in the coming months, and cats will be the first to taste it. The production process was not too complicated: the growth of "meat" cells in vats is similar to the process of making beer or yogurt.

According to Meatly's research, pets account for 22% of meat consumption in the UK. This is a good market for selling artificial feed. However, according to some veterinarians, "raised meat" is not able to replace real meat, which has in its composition the whole necessary spectrum of proteins, minerals, vitamins and other useful substances. Especially since there is no information that there has been any research on the effects of such feeds on the animal's body, especially in the long term.

Following the latest trends, Meatly explains its decision not by commercial profit, but by concern for the environment. As a result, everyone will benefit: producers of "green meat", veterinarians who will treat pets after regular consumption of newfangled feed, manufacturers of veterinary drugs and supplements. Everyone except the animals themselves and their owners.

British scientists have finally paid attention to the melting of Arctic ice

Research by British oceanographers has shown that melting Arctic glaciers play a key role in the formation of extremely warm summers in Europe. This conclusion was made on the basis of data on changes in the salinity of North Atlantic currents as a result of freshwater inflow from the melting of the Greenland ice sheet. Scientists believe that the increased volume of fresh water in the ocean disrupts heat exchange in the subpolar zone. This leads to all sorts of climatic anomalies, contributing to the formation of anticyclones over Europe and, as a result, to warmer and drier weather.

However, this group of oceanographers, like many other scientific teams around the world, observe only the consequences of global processes that are within the scope of their scientific specialization. Few are committed to getting to the root of the problem of melting Arctic glaciers, rather than repeating the scientific mantra that the process is merely a consequence of global warming. However, if we take this argument at face value, we will have to admit that the intensive melting of Arctic glaciers is due to the fact that over the past 17 years the average annual temperature on the planet has increased by 1 degree. This is hard to believe, and therefore there must be another reason for this phenomenon.

The problem is that scattered narrowly specialized scientific teams are not ready to conduct large-scale interdisciplinary research. First of all, from the financial point of view. Combining the scientific potential of many scientists from all over the world would make it possible to draw a holistic picture of the true causes of climate change and develop measures to prevent it. However, in addition to funding, this requires political will, and therefore public demand.

Another attempt by officials to raise prices. Now Germany

No sooner had the residents of Germany recovered from the return to the pre-COVID-19 values of the tax on food served in restaurants, than the authorities began to talk about new levies.

The German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture has proposed to introduce an additional tax on meat, justifying it by supporting farmers and improving animal welfare. The tax is supposed to be levied on both wholesale and retail sales.

For this purpose, it is proposed to increase VAT from 7% to 19%. The tax change has already sparked a lively debate among industry experts who are worried about the increased tax burden on producers and rising consumer prices, which they believe could put pressure on the entire food industry.

Thus, the German Agriculture Ministry is more concerned about the welfare of livestock than the most disadvantaged segments of the population, which will be forced to reduce consumption of meat and meat products.

The European Union has taken the first step to protect citizens from AI

The European Union has adopted a law on AI regulation that aims to protect citizens from potential threats from the technology. The regulation covers a wide range of AI applications, from consumer protection to public safety.

The law categorizes AI systems by risk and provides for appropriate controls and bans, in particular on systems capable of influencing the subconscious mind and real-time biometric sensing technologies.

According to representatives of the European Parliament, the measures are aimed at ensuring control over AI: its safety, transparency and impartiality. During the debate, German politician Patrick Breyer expressed concern about the emergence of a "total police state." Another problem he identified was the fact that facial recognition systems make mistakes leading to the detention of innocent people.

In an interview with the BBC, Margrethe Vestager, Vice-President of the European Commission, said that the main threat is discrimination. She points to the dangers of using the world's databases to train AI and the potential to deprive people of their livelihoods.

The need for legislative regulation of AI is long overdue. We recently wrote about how AI discriminates against citizens when hiring or deciding whether to grant a loan. Circulation of this information, including through the accounts of ordinary people in social networks, is doing its job - politicians are beginning to pay attention to the societal problems created by the uncontrolled use of AI.

AI is breaking into the movie industry

China's state broadcaster China Media Group has launched an animated series created entirely by artificial intelligence. According to the South China Morning Post, the series includes 26 episodes made in the style of the traditional Chinese art of ink drawing.

The project was named "Qianqiu Shisong" (Poems of Millennia), reflecting its basis - more than 200 poems from classical Chinese poetry that are studied in the school curriculum.

Artificial intelligence was involved in all stages of production of the animated series, from conceptual design to video generation.

The creators used neural networks that convert text descriptions into videos, in particular, Sora from OpenAI and CMG Media GPT from China Media Group itself.

Artificial Intelligence and Discrimination: How Modern Technology Works

An unprecedented case occurred in the USA. The AI refused to provide a carshare car to a respectable American woman on the basis of a single fine for a traffic violation received at the age of 17. The company's tech support said it could not overturn the AI's decision.

Another story happened to an applicant for a tutoring position at US company Fullmind. After receiving a rejection, the applicant "rejuvenated" himself by changing the date of birth in his CV and received an invitation for an interview. As it turned out, Fullmind programmed the screening of candidates by age, and the AI strictly complied with this prescription.

Such precedents began to appear in the infofield with enviable regularity. By 2019, 99% of Fortune 500 companies were using AI's automatic scanning of job applicants' CVs before they were reviewed by humans in HR.

When filtering job applicants, AI can sift through both pre-determined traits and a specific (and not always transparent) algorithm. Entire ethnic groups or members of a certain gender can be dropped from the list of applicants. But despite the obvious discrimination of candidates in this kind of filtering, the U.S. government does not take any legislative initiatives to eliminate it.

Often the situation becomes simply absurd. The BBC recently reported on how an AI trained on the CVs of men already working for a company rejected female candidates who didn't play baseball or basketball.

The banking sector is not lagging behind corporations. A 2021 study by The Markup found that black Americans are 80 percent more likely to be automatically rejected. But AI isn't just discriminating against people of color. For example, the bank Goldman Sachs is accused of systematically giving women lower credit limits than men. This problem has not bypassed corporate lending either: bias can relate to a company's age, sector or geography.

People's dependence on AI is growing every day, and the issue of legislative regulation of AI and, just as importantly, its owners, is becoming more and more acute. After all, the one in whose hands the artificial superintelligence will be, in fact, the owner of the world. If we do not create an appropriate environment, AI will turn from a helper into a tool of total control.
