Here’s my unpopular opinion….

SSRIs aren’t bad… medication got me through some really tough times in my life and there’s absolutely no shame in that.

If taking them makes YOUR life better, then GOOD FOR YOU.

If you don’t want to take them and are looking for other ways to help your anxiety, then GOOD FOR YOU.

The moral of the story should always be living your best life.

Either way, you’re gonna do great things.

No I’m not crazy….and neither are you!

Adding these 3 supplements have really supported me in my journey to come off Prozac.

Here are a some other ways you can regulate your nervous system and decrease anxiety:

Spend time outside - both green space and sunshine help your body produce more serotonin!

Hum or sing a song - the vibration in your throat stimulates the vagus nerve which helps us return to a rest state after being stressed!

Speak to yourself with kindness and love - you are the person you talk to most, what you say to yourself impacts everything you do and feel!

Honestly, it’s much easier than you think

Nervous system regulation in large part, is being intentional with small habits!

Here’s a few super easy tiny habits that will make a big difference in your ability to tolerate stress (and reduce anxiety)

- sing or hum a whole song (I like to do this in the shower)
- cold face bath or cold rinse at the end of the shower
- butterfly hug: cross your arms and alternately tap your shoulders. You can do this for 2-3 minutes while taking deep belly breathes (in through your nose, out through your mouth)
- get out into the sun
- walk barefoot in the grass
- hug your partner
- laugh with your kids
- dance to a song you love

Do you find it hard to change?

I sure do. I had to work (and continue to work) on changing decades old patterns…

Processed foods and sugars affect gut health. Over 90% of our bodies serotonin is made in the gut! What we eat AFFECTS our mental health. Include more whole foods and cut out fast food.

As a society we spent ALOT of time rotting in front of a screen. Many jobs require screen time so when you get home take a walk, spend sometime in the fresh air. Get your bare feet in the grass. You will notice an immediate shift!

The next time you think something negative about your self I want you to challenge it. Is it true? It probably isn’t. Then reframe what you thought in a positive way…

Here’s some easy ways to get started…

When you wake up take a few deep belly breaths (inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth)

Hum or sing a whole song - this is a great way to stimulate the vagus nerve and trigger the parasympathetic nervous system

Massage/ pull on your ear - this is an easy way to stimulate the auricular branch of the vagus nerve

Positive self talk - you would be surprised how important this is! Use positive affirmations and speak to yourself with kindness!

We can’t control the heat BUT we can change how we respond….

By regulating your nervous system and improving your self talk you can IMPROVE your response to stress (and thus decrease anxiety)

It doesn’t mean you’ll never feel stressed or anxious. But it does mean you can increase your tolerance to stress

So your ice cream will still melt, and that might make you feel somethings, but you’ll be able to get out the mop and clean up the mess.

Forrest Gump said life was like a box of chocolates, but I saw it’s more like ice cream!
