I caught my husband red handed. Such a big tough bloke all soft with the newest editions to our home.

Don't get excited... the little squeakers are off to their new home tomorrow within walking distance of our home.

Our regional continues with the flock tucked up in their big walk-in enclosure (18m x 3m).
I do feel sad when I see the empty field. This is especially as the Housing Order came into effect in Lincolnshire when the county had no cases; albeit there were clusters in Norfolk to the south and Yorkshire to the north. I understand the reasons, I'm complying with the legislation, but nonetheless, it makes me sad.

Sadly, I suspect the team will be confined in their enclosure until Spring at least. BTW, the team are fine. They're very animated and energetic. It's just me that is sad about it.

asked me why we chose the breeds we have.
We breed Buff Orpingtons, or as I like to call them "golden orbs of happiness." At the same time, we have three other breeds - Copper Black Marans
- Exchequer Leghorns
- Cream Legbars

We only keep hens from the non-Orpingtons, and all of them lay eggs that differ in colour to an Orpington egg. That means our only roosters are Orpingtons. As a result, if we have tinted eggs (Orpington), it would produce a pure breed Orpington if hatched. If we pick up a white (Legjorn), blue (Legbar) or dark brown (Marans) egg, we know that it would produce a hybrid hen, so we won't hatch it.

This method means we don't need to separate the breeds, and we can run them all together without seperate enclosures.

Who thinks Spring should get a move on?

Spring will bring an end to our regional on the east coast with higher temperatures.

Spring will allow us to free range again.

Spring will see the start of our 2025 breeding season for our Buff Orpington broody hens.

Do you think he'll produce beautiful youngsters?

This is Achilles, our 2nd breeding Buff Orpington cockerel. He's 20 weeks old and starting to mature. In a month's time, he'll have filled out and look similar to Hercules.

Achilles is the youngest member of the flock, and as he's not fully mature, he's at the bottom of the pecking order hierarchy. Sometimes I see the mature hen moving him away from treats or making sure he's the last into the coop and I can't help thing that in around a month, they'll be regretting those decisions as he takes his place alongside Hercules!!!!

Interesting times 😳

Hercules, one of our breeding Buff Orpington cockerels is maturing beautifully. We're very pleased with him. He has the main attributes that we look for:
- Calm demeanour
- Conforms to the breed standards
- Large size
- Is gentle with the hens
- Treads well (we had a young cockerel years ago who climbed on the hens backwards so he was never going to fertilised an egg 😱)

We have a whole array of shelters in our regional flockdown enclosure.

The largest is over the tractor tyre sandbath. This is where the chickens spend most of their day. Hercules is modelling one of two triangular wooden shelters that come with high perches (a favourite of Buddy). There are another two cubic shelters that I forgot to photograph too (oops).

Finally, there's a large space under the Nestera Raised Coop that Flamingo the Orpington and Domino the Exchequer Leghorn LOVE.

Our SALE is on and it includes NESTERA Coops.

Is this not the cutest thing to see first thing in the morning?

The frost has given us these wonderful footprints from Hercules, one of our cockerels.

We have treadle feeders for the chickens. Ours have a metal foot plate that the chickens stand on to access the food. In very cold weather and hot weather, I put a lightweight polystyrene pad covered by an old tea-towel on top. It's much more pleasant for them to stand on.

Treadle feeders are effective at keeping rodents away from the chicken pellets. What's more important for us is that as we're under a regional , the food is always covered by the lid so I don't have to put it under yet another clear tarpaulin roof area of our flockdown compliant enclosure. The enclosure is 18m x 3m so it would be a LOT to cor, so we make sure that areas where treats are given are covered, so that we remain compliant.

After a stormy night, the team are on good form.
I had to take the covers off the run so that they weren't ripped off by the storm. I knew that our heavyweight Garden Life Direct Walk-in Run wouldn't be blown away in the wind, but any covers would be ripped off.
I've lastly installed some basic, clear plastic covers over sections where I give the chickens treats (we are under a regional Avian Influenza Housing Order and all food must be under cover). Tomorrow, when the wind has properly reduced, I'm going to install our very robust Garden Life Direct covers. They're very thick and highly unlikely to blow away, but hard to put on in high winds!

Our sale is now on in our shop. The sale covers Garden Life Direct Walk-in Runs as well as Coops, Electric Fence Kits, Incubators, and more!

We only work with quality companies, including
- Brinsea Incubators
- Hotline Electric Fencing
- Nestera Coops
- Granddad Rob Designs Coops and Duk Housing
- Garden Life Direct Walk-in Runs

I'm sure many people are sharing posts today.

I'm not aiming to lose 5 stone in weight or run a marathon or anything else that I know I'll struggle with. Instead, I'm going to try and follow the mottos of Gannet 2.0 for the new year and simply be kind.

Social media can make many people feel uncomfortable or dissatisfied with their own lives, but social media very rarely reflects the whole of anyone's life, just the bits they want you to see.

I hope what I post brings people joy as it brings me joy, but if not, I hope you find accounts that show you things that will make you happy.

Happy New Year.
Let's make 2025 the year of kindness.

The covered sandbath is the favourite hangout out for the chickens, particularly on this VERY grey day.

They have the same sandbath in their free range area, and I hoped this would make them feel at home to have another tractor tyre filled with sand in their enclosure. Let's hope this regional is lifted soon.

Warm mash on Christmas Eve for the team.

They've adapted brilliantly to their enclosure in our regional flockdown after free ranging all of their lives.
As breeders, none of our team stay with us beyond 2 years, moving on to be either proven broody hen, breeding males, or as family pets if they are not Orpingtons. That means none of them have yet experienced a flockdown, and I admit to being worried that moving from half an acre to an 18m x 3m run (which strangly provides more space than is required to qualify as free range). I need not have worried. They've settled in brilliantly.

In response to who called for more egg pictures, Gannet 2.0 the Orpington and Domino the Exchequer Leghorn are still laying for me 😊
It's a pity about the other freeloaders 🤣
