The Marriage Equality Bill passed its final reading on April 17th 2013 - 10 years ago today!
Green MP Jan Logie MP has said its passing was a highlight of her career so far, “It was such a positive campaign focused on love and universal values and the debate in parliament by and large reflected that.”
“It was a marker in time that showed we had made real progress as a country towards inclusion.”
We thank everyone who got Marriage Equality over the line, including activists and MPs such as Jan Logie and Louisa Wall. Wall has said the significant milestone “was a concrete shift in our collective values by the people of Aotearoa New Zealand and a sign of our maturation as a nation. We will not tolerate discrimination against people based on their s*xual and gender diversity, and that’s something we should all be proud of.”
Aotearoa still has a long way to go, as exemplified by the recent rise in transphobia, but we hope our values of inclusivity and intolerance of discrimination will continue to bring the rainbow community forward. 🌈
